ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JAMES McDONALD

HEAD BASKETBALL COACH GREG WALCAVICH
for four years, Walcavich joined the Bobcats of West Virginia
Wesleyan in 1987.
Taking over a squad which returned only four players and a
schedule that showed just 11 games, he quickly turned the pro
gram around and posted an 18-10 slate in his first year. During
his initial season, Walcavich led his Bobcats to championships
in the Lock Haven tournament and also in the annual Walker
Brothers' tourney here in Edinboro. Wesleyan downed the Fight
ing Scots 103-90 in the championship game. His squad then
edged the Plaid 90-84 in a non-conference tilt later in the year.
In his last season at West Virginia Wesleyan, Walcavich led
the Bobcats to 22 wins against just nine losses with a squad of
all underclassmen.
Overall, his eight-year head coaching mark is 172-73. His
winning percentage of .710 ranks in the top 15 among active
NAIA men's basketball coaches.

Buffalo Bills annual scrimmage, which has been a yearly mid
summer highlight.
The personable athletic director also inttxxluced Edinboro's
Hall of Fame program which has evolved into an annual year
ending event to honor present and past athletes.
McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12
years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975)
and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled
an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span,
his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Conference
crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that
netted trips to the NAIA National Tournament His teams set 27
University records and made 19 post-season appearances while
four of his players were named All-Americans.

A chronological look at the coaching career of Walcavich:

Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald
served as assistant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956
graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of
Bridgeport, West Virginia.

1973-77
1977-78

In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical edu
cation from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also holds a
master's degree in health from the University of Buffalo.

Athletic Director James McDonaid

Edinboro University's athletic program was placed under
the talented and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald in July
of 1981. Increased emphasis on fund raising to provide a sound
scholarship foundation has become his top priority while numer
ous changes and innovations have also keyed the Scots' athletic
program under his direction.

As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wesleyan
and was twice voted both AP and UPI basketball All-American.
In 1960, he was the second leading scorer in the United States,
averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led his team to the
national basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He was
named to the NAIA's All-Tournament Team in 1959 and 1960.

Through his efforts more than four million dollars has been
raised during the past ten years. The funds generated by the
energetic athletic director's efforts will be used to assist Edin
boro's men and women athletes who compete in the Scots six
teen intercollegiate sports.

In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the
Year by the eastern seaboard coaches and that same year was
honored as one of the top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year
national poll. McDonald's honors also include selection to the
West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and member
ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He served four
years on the NAIA's All-American selection committee and was
chosen by the NAIA to coach an All-American team of NBAbound cagers who won the Gold Medal in Israel's Hapoel
Games.

"EUP has outstanding coaches and
facilities. With these ingredients, there is
no reason we could not be competitive in
the PSAC and Division II."

In addition to his classroom and basketball coaching duties,
McDonald was Edinboro's golf coach for 17 years. His teams
won over 40 tournaments and finished as high as third place at
the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected winning tra
dition in intercollegiate athletics, the former health and physical
education professor has vastly expanded the University's sum
mer activities.

As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a record of exten
sive community involvement. He was Little League Baseball
director for four years and also held a four-year post as a mem
ber of the General McLane School Board. He and his wife,
Mary Lou, have three sons - Mafk, Mike and Matthew.

Greg Walcavich

1983-87
1987-89

On April 10,1989, Gregory L. Walcavich became Edinboro
University's tenth men's head basketball coach.
Walcavich, 39 years old, came from West Virginia Wes
leyan College in Buchannon, West Virginia. A graduate of
Bladensburg High School in Maryland, he received a journalism
degree from Rutgers University in 1973.
In his first season as the Scots head coach, Walcavich guid
ed them to one of the best seasons in school history. On three
occasions the Fighting Scots were ranked in the nation's top 20,
posting an impressive 22-5 record. Despite playing in the rugged
PSAC, the Boro was overlooked for the NCAA II tournament.
Walcavich began his coaching career as an assistant at
Birmingham Southern in Alabama, where he stayed for four
seasons. In 1977, he obtained his first head coaching position at
Alexander City (Alabama) Junior College. After one year, Wal
cavich returned to Birmingham Southern as the school's head
coach.
During his five years at BSC, an NAIA affiliate, Walcavich
posted an impressive 114-44 record. His teams were ranked in
the top 20 four times in five seasons, as high as number two in
1979 and twice appeared in the NAIA national tournament in
Kansas City, Missouri.
For his efforts at Birmingham Southern, Walcavich was
named District "Coach of the Year" three times. His success was
recognized nationally in 1981 as he was selected as an assistant
coach for the United States Olympic Festival in Syracuse, New
York.
In 1983, he moved on to the Division I ranks, as an assis
tant coach at Rice University. There, he was a part of some of
the biggest wins in Rice basketball history including victories
over Arkansas, Notre Dame, and Houston. After staying at Rice

years of service both as a player and a coach, Edinboro's teams
have appeared in five post-season PSAC playoffs, three Pennsyl
vania State Championship games, two NAIA national tourna
ment berths in Kansas City, Missouri, and one NCAA east
regional appearance.
Coach Smiley's recruiting efforts are widely respected
because of the high percentage of athletes who have successfully
completed their bachelor's degrees. In addition, many of his
recruits have been outstanding All-Conference selections and
All-American candidates.
During his athletic career, Smiley finished as the top scoring
guard in Edinboro basketball history with 1,574 points and led
the Scots to some of their best seasons ever. In 1974-75 the
Scots were 22-5, the following year, Smiley led the Boro to its
best season ever and a 24-5 record. For his outstanding efforts,
Smiley was named NAIA All-American and first team PSAC
for two straight years.
After graduating in 1978 he returned to his home town of
Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he taught elementary school and
coached high school basketball from 1979-1983.
He then returned to Edinboro in 1983 and presently holds
two degrees from Edinboro, a B.S. in elementary education and
an M.A. in elementary administration.
He and his wife, Nadine, also a former Edinboro student
have two daughters, Asia (10) and Jasmine (1 1/2). The Smiley
family resides in Edinboro.

Tim Smiley

Tim Smiley, a former Fighting Scot All-American, enters
his eighth season as Edinboro's assistant basketball coach.
In April of 1989, Smiley became the eighth basketball play
er inducted into Edinboro University's Athletic Hall of Fame. He
earned his induction due to accomplishments on and off the
court.
Smiley's extensive career as an assistant basketball coach
and athlete at Edinboro, has provided him with a solid back

SCOTS READY FOR CHALLENGE IN 1991-92

1991-92 PREVIEW
AND PROFILES

Fox played in 20 games last
year and connected on 8 of his 18
field goal attempts.
Newcomers for the upcom
ing year will include forwards
Keith Perry, Price Williams, Marc
Pope and Exavier Zollicoffer.
Perry, a 6-4 forward, aver
aged 22.5 points, 12 rebounds and
2 blocks per game for Wilbur
Trosch at West Mifflin High
School. He scored over 1,200
points in his high school career.
Williams is a 6-4, 185 pound
junior college transfer from
Prince George's Community Col
lege in the Washington, D.C.,
area and was a junior college AllAmerican on the nation's number
four ranked JC squad.
Pope, a 6-6,205 pound trans
fer from Cuyahoga Community
College, averaged 10 points and
11 rebounds per game. He was a
three-year letterman for Doc
Daugherty at Euclid High School,
averaging 15 points and 10
rebounds per outing.
Zollicoffer, a 6-3, 210 pound
sophomore, played at Canton
McKinley (OH) Senior High
School where he led his team to a
state championship with a 27-1
record.
Junior Simpson, a 6-9, 215
pound forward was a redshirt last
year and should see action at the
forward/center position. Simpson
gives the Scots a solid defensive performer on the inside, some
thing the squad has needed for years.
Adam Cheek, a 6-2 junior and Walter Reap, a 6-1 junior are
the newcomers at the guard spot
Cheek averaged 12.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game at
Ballard High School in Louisville, KY. He also dished out 2.5
assists and had 2.3 steals per game for the Bruins.
Reap is a transfer from Cuyahoga Community College
where he received All-Conference honors in both years. He is
from Atlanta, GA, and played under Coach Mark Osina at C. E.
Ellison High School in Texas, where he averaged 20 points and
6 assists per game. He was named to the All-District and AllCentral Texas teams as a senior.
The Scots will begin their annual tournament in McComb
Fieldhouse on November 22. In this year's tournament the Plaid
will battle Bloomsburg, West Virginia Tech and Salem-Teikyo
for the title.

When Edinboro University packed its bags for Christmas
vacation a year ago, there were several questions left unan
swered. Could a struggling team with three early season road
losses compete in the PSAC? What the Scots did was more than
merely compete.
The Fighting Scots showed that a team with early setbacks
could pull together. "Our guys did a great job of coming togeth
er," said third year coach Greg Walcavich. "They never doubted
each other. We came back in January and started all over."
Walcavich's club may not be so fortunate this year to be
able to catch a second wind in January. This is due to a very
strong first half schedule that features Bloomsburg (last year's
top finisher in the PSAC East) along with two of the best teams
in the West Virginia Conference (Salem-Teikyo and West Vir
ginia Tech) in the Edinboro tournament. The road will not get
any easier for Walcavich's club. "We have a rigorous schedule,"
commented Walcavich. "We could have an outstanding basket
ball team and not win 18 games. We may be competing for a
league playoff spot with a lackluster record."
The Plaid finished the 1990-91 campaign at 18-10 overall
and 84 in the PSAC with no less than six league games decided
at the buzzer. "We won a number of close games (last year),"
Walcavich noted. "Out of twelve league games, six were decided
on the last shot. We hit four of them, we were four shots away
from being 4-8 or 10-2."
Edinboro will have some big shoes to fill in the '91-92 sea
son. The Scots will be without the services of 6-5 forward Ster
ling Washington, last year's leading scorer and rebounder (17.1
ppg, 8.5 rpg); 5-11 guard Mark Murdock (12.6 ppg) and 6-8
power forward John Mohre (6.9 ppg), all due to graduation. If
those losses weren't tough enough for the Scots' mentor, things
got worse with the news that Sean Gibson, this year's leading
returning scorer at 14.4 ppg, will not return to school.
Derek Walton, a 5-9 senior guard will be the nucleus to
build around in the backcourt for Walcavich. Walton averaged
12.6 points and 4.4 assists per game a year ago. "We will cer
tainly look forward to a good year from Derek," commented
Walcavich. "He did a real nice job for us last year."
The team leader for the 1991-92 campaign will be 6-5
senior forward Aaron Brown, the PSAC "Rookie of the Year" in
1988-89 who averaged 9.7 points per game last year. Brown will
likely end his career on the top 15 all-time scorers list at Edin
boro. He needs just 194 points to reach the milestone. "Aaron
was here before me," noted Walcavich. "I anticipate him being
one of the best players we'll have this year, he'll really do well."
Also returning from last year's squad are sophomore for
ward Torry Rollins, junior forward Sam Dickerson, junior guard
Greg Fox, and sophomore guards Ron Santiago and Carlos
Peterson.
Rollins played in 24 games for the Scots last year, averaged
5.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. He shot 49.6 percent from the floor
while making 72 percent of his free throws.
Dickerson played in 23 games, averaging 4.3 points and 2.5
rebounds per game last year as a sophomore, including 8
rebounds in a win at Lock Haven.
Santiago only averaged 2.5 points per game but did play in
26 games last year as a freshman.
