Scots impressive
in victorious dehut
By JACK POLANCY

EDINBORO — Impressive!
That describes completely the de
but of new head basketball coach
Greg Walcavich and his Fighting
Scots of Edinboro University.
The Plaidmen — a lightning-fast,
high-flying, shot-blocking crew —
crushed a talented Lincoln Universi
ty outfit 87-67 in the second game of
the Daniel Overheim Memorial
Tournament Friday night.
A crowd of approximately 1500
kept McComb Fieldhouse buzzing
as it watched as the Scots — with
five performers in double figures —
cruised to their season-opening tri
umph.
The Boro will now face East
Stroudsburg (a 73-46 winner over
Mercyhurst in the opener) for the
tourney title 7.30 p.m. Saturday.
The Hurst takes on Lincoln in the
5:30 consolation opener.
Veteran Billy Wade paced the
Fighting Scots with 26 points, nine
rebounds and six blocked shots (the
winners rejected a whopping 13 Lin
coln efforts).
Flashy Jimmy Johnson and hard
working Aaron Brown each ended
with 14 markers while Sterling
Washington — who led the Boro in
rebounding with 11 — had 12 count
ers and 6-6 freshman Lasana Crider
10 points.
Edinboro shot a solid 51 percent
(35-of-68) from the floor and owned a
17-of-26 sin stripe figure.
The visitors from Lincoln, Pa., hit
a woeful 32 percent (23-of-71) —
mainly because of the Edinboro’s
defense — from the field and had a
15-of-27 free throw chart.
Shawn Day, a 6-2 freshman, paced
the Lions with 19 points before foul
ing out late in the game.
Lincoln posted a 53-49 margin in
rebounding with Brooks Williams

Diebold has emerged as a national and international figure in the
world of higher education. His special fields of interest are
ethics in education and international programs. As chairman of
the National Committee on Governance, he presented a state
ment of ethics to the American Association of State Colleges
and Universities in November 1988. The statement, "Ethical
Practices for College Presidents," was unanimously adopted at
the annual meeting of AASCU and has been published and cir
culated as a policy statement by that organization. It should be
noted that this code of ethics is the first ever to be officially
adopted by a professional organization and directed to the per
formance of college and university presidents.

Since his appointment as president of Edinboro Univer
sity of Pennsylvania on August 1, 1979, Foster F. Diebold has
initiated a wide variety of policies and programs designed to
complement his desire for an increased level of excellence and
quality in higher education.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JAMES McDonald

of the biggest wins in Rice basketball history including victories
over Arkansas, Notre Dame, and Houston. After staying at Rice
for four years, Walcavich joined the Bobcats of West Virginia
Wesleyan in 1987.
Taking over a squad which returned only four players
and a schedule that showed just 11 games, he quickly turned the
program around and posted an 18-10 slate in his first year. Dur
ing his initial season, Walcavich led his Bobcats to
championships in the Lock Haven tournament and also in the
annual Walker Brothers' tourney here in Edinboro. Wesleyan
downed the Fighting Scots 103-90 in the championship game.
His squad then edged the Plaid 90-84 in a non-conference tilt
later in the year.
In his last season at West Virginia Wesleyan, Walcavich
led the Bobcats to 22 wins against just nine losses with a squad
of all underclassmen.
Overall, his seven-year head coaching mark is 154-63.
His winning percentage of .710 ranks in the top 15 among active
NAIA men's basketball coaches.

Buffalo Bills annual scrimmage, which has been a yearly mid
summer highlight.
The personable athletic director also introduced Edin
boro's Hall of Fame program which has evolved into an annual
year-ending event to honor present and past athletes.
McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12
years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975)
and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled
an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span,
his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Conference
crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that
netted trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams set 27
University records and made 19 post-season appearances while
four of his players were named All-Americans.
Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald
served as assistant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956
graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of
Bridgeport, West Virginia.

Athletic Director Janies McDonaid

In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical
education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also
holds a master's degree in health from the University of Buffalo.

Edinboro University’s athletic program was placed
under the talented and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald
in July of 1981. Increased emphasis on fund raising to provide a
sound scholarship foundation has become his top priority while
numerous changes and innovations have also keyed the Scots'
athletic program under his direction.

As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wes
leyan and was twice voted both AP and UPI basketball AllAmerican. In 1960, he was the second leading scorer in the
United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led
his team to the national basketball tournament in Kansas City,
Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Tournament Team in
1959 and 1960.

Through his efforts more than 3.3 million dollars has
been raised during the past nine years. The funds generated by
the energetic athletic director's efforts will be used to assist
Edinboro's men and women athletes who compete in the Scots
fifteen intercollegiate sports.

In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of
the Year by the eastern seaboard coaches and that same year was
honored as one of the top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year
national poll. McDonald's honors also include selection to the
West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and member
ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He served four
years on the NAIA's All-American selection committee and was
chosen by the NAIA to coach an All-American team of NBAbound cagers who won the Gold Medal in Israel's Hapoel

In addition to his classroom and basketball coaching
duties, McDonald was Edinboro's golf coach for 17 years. His
teams won over 40 tournaments and finished as high as third
place at the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

Walcavich began his coaching career as an assistant at
Birmingham Southern in Alabama, where he stayed for four
seasons. In 1977, he obtained his first head coaching position at
Alexander City (Alabama) Junior College. After one year, Wal
cavich returned to Birmingham Southern as the school's head
coach.
During his five years at BSC, an NAIA affiliate, Wal
cavich posted an impressive 114-44 record. His teams were
ranked in the top 20 four times in five seasons, as high as num
ber two in 1979 and twice appeared in the NAIA national tour
nament in Kansas City, Missouri.
For his efforts at Birmingham Southern, Walcavich was
named District "Coach of the Year" three times. His success was
recognized nationally in 1981 as he was selected as an assistant

Tim Smiley, a former Fighting Scot All-American,
enters his seventh season as Edinboro's assistant basketball
coach.
In April of 1989, Smiley became the eighth basketball
player inducted into Edinboro University's Athletic Hall of
Fame. He earned his induction due to accomplishments on and
off the court.
Smiley's extensive career as an assistant basketball
coach and athlete at Edinboro, has provided him with a solid
background in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. In
the 11 years of service both as a player and a coach, Edinboro's
teams have appeared in five post-season PSAC playoffs, three
Pennsylvania State Championship games, two NAIA national
tournament berths in Kansas City, Missouri, and one NCAA east
regional appearance.
Coach Smiley's recruiting efforts are widely respected
because of the high percentage of athletes who have successfully
completed their bachelor's degrees. In addition, many of his
recruits have been outstanding All-Conference selections and
All-American candidates.
During his athletic career, Smiley finished as the top
scoring guard in Edinboro basketball history with 1,574 points
and led the Scots to some of their best seasons ever. In 1974-75
the Scots were 22-5, the following year, Smiley led the Boro to
its best season ever and a 24-5 record. For his outstanding
efforts, Smiley was named NAIA All-American and first team
PSAC for two straight years.
After graduating in 1978 he returned to his home town
of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he taught elementary school and
coached high school basketball from 1979-1983.
He then returned to Edinboro in 1983 and presently
holds two degrees from Edinboro, a B.S. in elementary educa
tion and an M.A. in elementary administration.
He and his wife, Nadine, also a former Edinboro stu
dent have two daughters, Asia (9 years) and Jasmine (4 months).
The Smiley family resides in Edinboro.

Assistant coach Tim Brueggeman begins his first sea
son with the Fighting Scot basketball squad. He will aid the bas
ketball program in the areas of practice and game management,
scouting, and recruiting.
Brueggeman's basketball background includes his AllConference playing days at Geneva High School in Ohio, where
he was a three-time starter and letterwinner. His senior season,
he was named the team's most valuable player. He was recruited
by numerous Division I colleges in the Ohio area but decided to
pursue another sports love instead - tennis.
Brueggeman first attended Lakeland Community Col
lege, Ohio, where he achieved a top-ten ranking in singles com
petition on the junior college level. Upon graduation from
Lakeland in '85, he went on to attend Louisville University
where he captained the Cardinal tennfs squad and was nationally
ranked in flight two doubles competition.
He is also the men's and women's head tennis coach at
Edinboro and recently completed his first year with the rebuild
ing Fighting Scots. The women's team finished fifth in the
PSAC with an overall record of 14-12, while the men's team fin
ished fourth in the conference with a 12-14 record.
Brueggeman is currently a professional member of the
United States Tennis Association. He resides in the Edinboro
area with his wife, Tracy.

help administer both the men's and women's athletic program.
Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Lipkovich has
had teaching and coaching experience at West Virginia Universi
ty, Central Connecticut State College, and Trinity College. The
Ohio native, who graduated from Chaney High School, began
her teaching and coaching career in 1972 with the Howland

SCOTS LOOK TO NATIONAL LEVELS

1990-91 PREVIEW
AND PROFILES

The Edinboro University Fighting Scot basketball
team, under Head Coach Greg Walcavich, won't be able to sneak
up on anyone anymore. The Scots are no longer a secret, nor is
the ability of their second-year coach.
But according to Walcavich (and he speaks like a true
coach) the guys on the court make the difference.
"Too much credit goes to the coach when you win and
too much blame when you lose," Walcavich comments. "The
players were the dilference last year. Their best attribute was
their ability and desire to work hard and that is exactly what they
did. This year's team will hopefully be no different. We lost
some leadership in Billy Wade but we return four players who
will get the job done," Walcavich continued.
One thing certain about the 1990-91 Edinboro basket
ball team, is that the squad is going to be tested — in and out of
the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. After posting a 14-0
independent record last year and still not receiving a bid to the
national playoffs, the Scots' strength of schedule was questioned
by the national voters. That will not be the case this year.
"We added the likes of Millersville and Oakland Uni
versity (MI)," Walcavich commented. "We play 22 Division II
opponents out of 27 games and that is not a bad ratio. We will
play a demanding schedule this year. It is obvious that the
NCAA selection committee looks at your schedule when going
through the bid process. Our goal is to win the PSAC and get the
automatic bid. If that doesn't happen, then we have to put our
selves in a position to get the at-large vote," he added.
The Scots will also carry Walcavich's yearly goal of
going unbeaten at home and splitting on the road to gain a PSAC
West playoff spot. "I am excited because I will have a better
grasp of the kids that are here. We know the six that return and
the others we have recruited, so I am confident in their abilities,"
Walcavich added. "You can't look beyond the division, it proved
its toughness last year."
"Let me stress that you win championships with what
you return — not with what you add. No matter who (recruits)
we brought in, our team will win because of the players coming
back," added Walcavich.
The top guns he is referring to are seniors Sterling
Washington, John Mohre, Mark Murdock, and junior Aaron
Brown.
Also returning will be guard Greg Fox. He was a big
part of the Scots' success last winter and will contribute again in
1990-91.
A pair of transfers, Derek Walton from Miami Univer
sity (OH) and Sean Gibson of Boyce Community College in
Pittsburgh are also going to be major factors for Walcavich and
the Scots.
The remaining six that make up the current 14-man ros
ter include red-shirts Lasana Crider and Carlos Peterson, trans
fers Sam Dickerson, John Hadyka, Junior Simpson, and
freshman Ron Santiago.
Washington, one of the best players in the PSAC, will
return to anchor the lineup. Versatile enough to play five posi
tions, he was second to Wade in scoring (12.9 ppg), rebounding
(7.5 rpg) and blocks (38) last year and led the Scots with 69
steals. He also netted nearly 51% of his field goal tries and
improved his free throw percentage to .655 a year ago.
Mohre, set to play any of three spots, will be relied on

for more scoring this year. A fine shooter, Mohre averaged 7.4
ppg a year ago and shot 45% from the floor. He also added 107
rebounds and blocked a dozen shots.
Murdock, a 2-guard, was second on the team in threepoint goals (22) last year and returns for his senior year. He con
nected on 72% of his free throw attempts and added 76 assists,
third most on the squad.
Brown, likely to play the 3 and 4 spot, returns for his
third year of starting for the Plaid. Division "Rookie of the Year"
as a freshman. Brown scored just under 10 ppg and was third for
the Scots in blocks (32) and rebounds (165) last year.
Fox, a guard, saw limited action last year. He played 60
minutes and spelled guards Adrian Batts and Jimmy Johnson in
crucial games. Fox was credited with 15 assists, or one out of
every four minutes he played.
Walton, a point guard for Miami University (OH) last
year, will likely fill the void left by Batts. A starter in 25 of 28
games for the Redskins, Walton averaged 6.6 ppg and 4.3
assists. His ability to shoot the three will be a big factor.
Gibson, heavily recruited out of Pittsburgh, is a former
star at Langley High School and Robert Morris College. The alltime leading scorer at Langley, Gibson went on to be named
ECAC "Rookie of the Year" at Robert Morris in 1987-88. He
averaged 13 points per game for the Colonials that year and 22
ppg last year at Boyce Community College in Pittsburgh.
Crider, a red-shirt due to a knee injury, will hopefully
recover to help the Scots. Injured in Edinboro's third game last
year, he may be the missing link in the team's playoff quest. At
6-7, he could be a major factor along the baseline.
Peterson, a freshman guard, who sat out all last season,
is also from Langley High. He shows great promise at the guard
spot, coming off a high school career where he was a three-year
letterman averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists.
Dickerson, a 6-6 sophomore, will help the Scot inside
game. He transferred from Hibbing Junior College in Minnesota
where he was one of the top players coming out of the JUCO
system. He averaged 10.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks
per game as a senior at Bedford High School in Ohio.
Hadyka, a transfer from Community College of Morris
in New Jersey, will likely play the 2 and 3 spot for the Plaid. A
fine all-around player, he scored over 1,0(X) points and grabbed
over 1,000 rebounds in high school. He netted 18 points and 17
rebounds per game as a senior and is just 6 ft. 3 inches.
Simpson, a 6-9 junior forward, enters Edinboro from
Kilgore Junior College in Texas. Named 1989-90 "Athlete of the
Year" at Kilgore, Simpson should solidify the inside game for
Walcavich. A native of Barberton, Ohio, Simpson averaged 10
points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks a game in high school.
Santiago, a true freshman, will battle for the starting
point guard spot this winter. Recruited out of Canada, he led his
high school team to an impressive 34-7 mark including an
unbeaten 17-0 slate and the conference title. He netted 16 ppg
with most of those coming from the perimeter.
The Scots will begin the season with their annual tour
nament in McComb Fieldhouse on November 16. In this year's
Daniel Overheim Memorial/Walker Brothers Tournament, the
Scots will battle Kutztown, West Virginia State and Mt. Vernon
for the title.

What Edinboro meant to me: Edinboro University can best be described in one
word, PEOPLE. At the 'Boro, besides the quality education that I received, the most
important commodity that I gained was the lifelong friendships of students, faculty
and the administration. The friendship of peers happens at all universities, but the
interest that the faculty and administration takes in the students is not paralleled at
any institution. I owe much of my life's experiences and values to the many mem
bers of the administration that took the time to get to know me and allowed me to
befriend them. Even today, I look to my mentors at Edinboro for advice, guidance or
just someone to talk. When I look at the best times of my life, the people and experi
ences at Edinboro fill many of these memories, I Just hope one day I can do some
thing for Edinboro in return for what it has done for me.
Sincerely,
Xavier Williams

What Edinboro meant to me: Edinboro University gave me the opportunity to
advance myself as a person, student, and athlete. Without the gift from God and the
opportunity Edinboro gave me, I would never have been a success. Edinboro also
gave me the opportunity to meet some of the most creative minds on earth. The pro
fessors here are willing to work with students on a one-on-one basis unlike other
larger universities. I also thank everyone, mainly the townspeople and faculty mem
bers for all their support. My success is their success. The care and encouragement
from all involved at Edinboro was endless. Thanks for everything.
