SCOTS STRIVE TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS
While Edinboro State basketball opponents will notice a major change on the Scot's
bench with the appointment of new coach Guy Conti, ESC's 1975—76 basketball team
has a host of familiar faces still in plaid uniforms. Conti, who replaced successful 12-year
mentor Jim McDonald, has nine lettermen returning from a talented squad that went
22-5 last season and made a trip to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Mo.,
in a record-breaking year.
The major problem facing Conti is finding a group of starters from his roster that
includes numerous cage standouts.
Headlining the list of returnees are a pair of All-America honorable mention winners in
6-5 senior forward Dennis Hampton and Tim Smiley, a 6-0 junior guard.
Hampton, who had to sit out last season due to a leg injury, hit the hoop at a 12.3
pace and cleared the glass at a 10.3 rate in his junior campaign.
Smiley led the team in scoring last year with his 15.3 ppg output and has pumped in
640 points during his two-year stint with the Scots. The 6-0 speedster also found time to
record 78 assists and pull down 94 rebounds.
Also augmenting the Scots' point productive offense that averaged 81 markers per
game is double-figure scorer Don Childs. The smooth operating 6-3 forward clicked on
49% of his tries while meshing the cords at a 10.2 rate and snared 124 caroms.
Giving the Scots added power under the boards in 6-7 sophomore Gary Stanton who
paced the team in blocked shots with 30, grabbed 148 errant shots, dropped in 173
points and had a team leading 53.1 shooting mark.
Fighting Scot fans can continue to expect the same exciting, sparkplug play from 6-2
senior Bill Lentz and 6-3 junior Alonzo Craig whose versatility make them effective at
either guard or forward slots. Lentz fired in 118 points as ESC's top reliever last year,
while Craig contributed 126.
Still to be reckoned with at the playmaker slot is 5-11 junior Glenn Lett, another
century-plus scorer who's being challenged by junior college transfers 6-2 Harry Ley and
6-2 Bob Dillard, along with 6-3 junior Fred Simmons. Lett was not only superb leading
the Scot offense, but was one of the team's defensive leaders. Trying to fight his way into
this group of seasoned guards is the Scot's top freshman recruit, 6-2 Stan Trivelli, one of
the leading offensive performers in Northeastern Ohio last year with his 25.7 points per
game average.
Waiting to prove themselves under the boards are 6-10 senior Brad Draper, 6-7 senior
Ron Beckett, 6-8>2 junior Tom Craig and 6-4 sophomore Jerome Thomas.
A trio of regular season tournaments on foreign hardwoods will also sternly test the
Scots who have only 10 home dates on their 24-game schedule.

A NEW FACE ... A NEW CHALLENGE
Making his debut in the college coaching ranks is
Freeport, Pa. native, Guy Conti, who has been a
member of the ESC athletic staff since 1970. Conti
has served as the Scots' head baseball coach in 1970
and 1971 and as assistant football coach for the past
four seasons.
His stints in both sports have demonstrated his
outstanding ability as both a coach and a recruiter
at the collegiate level. In his two years as the Scots'
diamond mentor, Conti assembled a talent-laden
team that recorded consecutive record-breaking
seasons, giving Edinboro its best finishes in the
school's baseball history. He quickly climbed the
ladder in ESC's football program moving from
freshman coach in his initial year, then to tutor the
Scots' receivers and finally to direct the ESC
backfield as offensive coordinator for the past two
campaigns. During his two years of grooming the
Head Coach Guy Conti
Scots' offense, Edinboro finished with a very
respectable 9—6—3 slate.
A graduate of Clarion State College, Conti has had outstanding careers both as a player
and a coach in several different sports. The versatile athlete spent a professional baseball
stint with the Houston Astros organization as a catcher and was an outstanding football
player at Freeport High and Clarion State where he played quarterback.
Conti, his wife, Janet, and their children, Kim, Curt, Craig and Kelly, reside in
Edinboro.

ASSISTANT COACHES
Both John Furcron and Paul Siegel will be serving their first years in Edinboro State's
basketball program. A native of Wilmington, Ohio, Furcron holds a B.S. degree from
Bowling Green, along with a master's and doctorate from West Virginia University. At
Bowling Green, he was selected MVP as a senior halfback on the Fulcans' 1958 football
team. Prior to his arrival at Edinboro, Furcron spent nine years teaching in the Elyria,
Ohio public schools system. Two years ago, he stepped in to guide the Scots' soccer team
to an 8—3—1 season and the NAIA District
18 championship. He, his wife, Gloria, and
their two children, Angela and John, make
their home in Edinboro.
Paul Siegel, a graduate of Clarion State
and a master's degree holder from W. Va.
University, is not new to the cage ranks
where he has piled up 111 wins and 67 losses
in eight years as a head coach. He served as
an assistant at both East Brady and Lower
Dauphin high schools before being named
head mentbr at Youngsville in 1966 where
he won the league title in 1968. He was
appointed head coach at Erie's McDowell
High in 1969 and won the school's only
section and district championship in 1971.
Siegel, his wife, Judy, along with their three
children, Paul, Pam and Julie, reside in
Fairview Township.

THE TEAM BEHIND THE TEAM . . .

Bob Klingler

Paul Newman

Al Hall

AL HALL - ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Since All Hall's appointment as Athletic Director in 1968, Edinboro State has enjoyed
one of the most successful collegiate athletic programs in the East. Through his efforts,
ESC has become a focal point for athletics in Northwestern Pennsylvania and has hosted
numerous championship events. Typical of this was the designation of Edinboro as the
site for the 1972 National YMCA Diving and Swimming Championships, the largest
swimming meet in the world. Under his leadership, ESC's sports program has vastly
expanded and attained new memberships in the ECAC and NCAA while building a
coaching staff that has compiled the College's best record in history. Al's selection to
numerous sport committees in the Erie area along with posts in both the ECAC and
Pennsylvania Conference bear out his dedication to the world of athletics. A graduate of
Baldwin-Wallace College, he served as Assistant Director of Athletics at Akron University
for two years and piloted Akron's cross country teams to championship finishes for 12
seasons. Al, his wife, Pam, daughter, Beth, and their son. Dale, reside in Edinboro.
PAUL NEWMAN - SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR
Paul Newman began his duties eight years ago as ESC's first Sports Information
Director and now also serves as Assistant to the President for External Affairs. Paul is a
1964 graduate of Edinboro where he earned both his B.S. degree and M.Ed. while
majoring in English. Prior to joining the Scots, he held a teaching position in Ashtabula,
Ohio, for three years. In connection with his duties, he is also the District 18 Publicity
Chairman for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and recently
completed a two-year term as President of the NAIA's Sports Information Directors'
Association. Paul, his wife, Connie, and their children, Paul Jr., Michele and Scott, make
their home in Edinboro.
BOB KLINGLER - TEAM TRAINER
Giving Fighting Scot athletes the tops in professional medical care and producing
top-notch staffs of student trainers has been the trademark of trainer Bob Klingler who
begins his ninth season at Edinboro State. The 1952 Lock Haven grad ventured to
Hermann School of Physical Therapy in Houston, Texas and became a registered physical
therapist in 1954. He later received his M.S. from Bucknell. Prior to accepting his ESC
post, Klingler taught at Milton Hershey, a private boys' school in Hershey, Pa., where he
served as the Spartans' head football mentor, head track coach and assistant basketball
coach. Both his cinder and cage teams never experienced a losing season, while his grid
teams continually posted successful campaigns in the powerful Capitol Area Conference.
Bob, his wife, Jill, and daughter, July, make their home in Washington Township.

Ferraro Ford Erie Classic — November 28—29, Allegheny Invitational —
December 5—6, West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament — January 5—6
The Fighting Scots will be involved in the most regular season tournaments they have ever
competed with appearances in three separate tourneys slated. The Scots will waste no time in tipping
off the season with a tourney appearance at the Ferraro Ford Erie Classic on November 28—29. The
four-team field consists of West Georgia, NAIA national champions two years ago; Salem of West
Virginia, a team that returns the leading scorer in the nation of a year ago in guard Archie Talley;
Mercyhurst with 6-9 All-American Jesse Campbell; along with the Scots. Edinboro will tip off the fray
in a 7:00 o'clock encounter against the host school, Mercyhurst Lakers.
A week later on December 5—6, ESC will find itself opening the action for a second tournament
when the Scots vie in the Allegheny Invitational at Meadville, Pa. The men in plaid take on Frostburg
State of Maryland in the lid-lifter at 7:00 o'clock, while Allegheny battles Geneva in the Second game.
The Scots will have nine games under their belts when they hit their first action in 1976 with a trip
south to West Virginia to participate in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on January 5-6. For
the third straight time, the Scots will be tipping off tourney action. Edinboro State will match baskets
in a 7:00 o'clock encounter with Alderson-Broaddus College. The following game will pit the host
team. West Virginia Wesleyan, against another Keystone State entrant, St. Vincent College, a squad
that the Scots will have already played midway through December. Wesleyan is tabbed as the team to
beat with Coach Gary Hess returning a front line of 6'8", 6'7" and 6'6" from a team that was 15—2 a
year ago.

EDINBORO STATE ALL-AMERICANS

Dan Petchel (F) 1964-65

Darryl Meachem (F) 1965-66

Frank Smith (F) 1967-68, 1968-69

Fred Riley (G) 1971-72

Edinboro State's four All-American winners
have been traditionally prolific scorers for the
Fighting Scots. Three forwards and a guard
comprise the quartet which was groomed by
Jim McDonald for their national honors on the
Edinboro hardwoods.
Dan Petchel ranks as the second all-time
scorer in ESC's cage history with his 1,344
career points while Fred Riley and Frank
Smith hold down the number three and four
spots on the scoring list with their respective
1,279 and 1,225-point outputs. Darryl
Meachem ranks seventh among the all-time
top scorers with his 881 tallies.

In the rebounding department, Meachem
and Petchel are two of the college's top three
career rebounders with 897 and 744, respec
tively. Meachem pulled down 393 rebounds
for a school record established during the
1965- 66 season.
Smith owns two individual scoring records.
His 54-point output against Fredonia in the
1966- 67 season earned him the most points
scored in a single game record. The 6-1
forward compiled the most field goals scored
in a single game record with 21 two-point
markers against Waynesburg in the same
season and 21 against Kenyon in 1969.

EDINBORO STATE COLLEGE . .

. PREPARING FOR TOMORROW

From its beginning as a private
academy in 1856, Edinboro State
College has surged to the forefront
as one of the leading educational
institutions in Western Pennsyl
vania. Located just 15 miles south
of Erie, Pa., the College's setting
offers a contrast of seasons.
Enhanced by the beauty of Edin
boro Lake, the community serves as
a resort center during the summer
while numerous nearby ski slopes
offer a variety of recreation in the
picturesque winter months. The
College's location enables it to
readily serve the tri-state area with
its proximity to Pittsburgh, Pa.
(125 miles), Cleveland, Ohio (100
miles) and Buffalo, New York (120
miles). Moreover, it is easily acces
sible from the north and south by
Interstate 79 and east and west by
Interstate 90.
Until recently the chief objective
of the College was the education
and preparation of classroom teach
ers for the schools of the Common-

wealth. With the implementation of
programs in arts, sciences and
humanities, Edinboro has now
become a multi-purpose institution
of higher learning serving the educa
tional needs of a tri-state area.
The College has experienced a
rapid growth rate in students, fac
ulty and physical plant. Forty
buildings cover the 585-acre cam
pus which now services more than
7,000 students.
In its university oriented role,
the College makes contributions In
the fields of education, govern
ment, conservation, environmental
improvement, urban and rural prob
lems, crime prevention, and service
to business and industry. Edinboro
seeks to offer educational programs
which will afford maximum oppor
tunities to its potential students
and to meet the educational needs
of its region from a professional
and a cultural standpoint.
With the addition of the liberal

arts degree program in 1962, the College's curriculum has expanded to include
numerous course selections. Curricula range from elementary and secondary
education, special fields in art, library science, music and special education to
medical technology.
Student activities are designed to develop the personality, poise, self-confidence
and professional awareness that will fit graduates for significant participation in
American society.
The College stresses friendly relations among students and faculty, as well as
active student participation in decisions affecting them. Quality education has been
an Edinboro tradition for more than a century as graduates have distinguished
themselves in the professions, business and industry.
With the appointment of Dr. Chester T. McNerney as Edinboro State's President
in 1966, the College has undergone innovations and reorganization that have
enabled the College to keep in step with the times and maintain its academic
excellence.
Edinboro State College is at the brink of a new era and has taken the initiative
for a new direction among the state colleges of Pennsylvania. The College plans to
offer programs in such diverse fields as international education, business administra
tion and engineering to meet its leadership responsibilities in the years ahead.
Keeping pace with the College's academic progress has been a building program
which has dramatically changed the physical appearance of the campus over the
past decade. Included among the additions are a nine-acre lake, an athletic complex,
dormitory quadrant and new student services facilities such as a student union,
dining hall and health center. Scheduled for completion in the near future are a new
library and administration building.

One of the finest athletic facili
ties in northwestern Pennsylvania
services the Fighting Scots' basket
ball, wrestling and swimming teams.
The new structure has a seating
capacity in the gymnasium area for
4200 fans while the natatorium
seats 500 spectators. Underwater
sound and lighting systems are
featured in the pool area as well as
four underwater viewing ports. Adja
cent to the swimming area is a
separate diving tank with one and
three meter diving boards. The
electrically operated bleachers can
be rolled back in a matter of minutes
to expand the available floor space
into three basketball courts for
intramural usage. The athletic com
plex has already become a favorable
site for both high school basketball
and wrestling championships. A
680-car parking lot is conveniently
located next to the fieldhouse to
accommodate team followers. Ad
ditional attractions include office
facilities for members of the Health
and Physical Education Department,
locker room space for 1,000 stu
dents, an equipment room and
two classrooms.
