HISTORY AND LOCATION

Edinboro State College is located in the Borough of Edinboro,
Erie County, Pa.

It is the oldest Pennsylvania teacher training

school west of the Allegheny Mountains and the second oldest such
school in the State.

Edinboro Academy was chartered in 1856 and

become a State Normal School by the Act of 1857.
Under the original charter the school was privately adminis
tered until 1861, when the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania chartered
it as a State Normal School.

The school was purchased by the

Commonwealth in 191^.
In 1926 the State recognized Edinboro as a four-year college
and granted it the right to offer undergraduate degrees in ele
mentary, secondary and art education.
In 1957 the College was authorized to begin its graduate
program of teacher education which leads to the Master of Education
degree in elementary, secondary, guidance and counseling, science
and English,
Edinboro State Teachers College became Edinboro State College
in i960.
A Liberal Arts program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree
with concentration in the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and
the Humanities was approved in I962.

HIGHLANDER COACHING STAFF

LeftJim McDonald, Head Coach

Jim McDonald will be embarking on his
fifth

year as head Highlander basketball

mentor this season. Last season, McDonald
was named the NAIA’s District 18 Basket
ball Coach of the Year, Area 8 Basketball
Coach of the Year by the coaches of the
Eastern Seaboard States, and one of the 9
finalists in the NAIA’s Coach of the Year
poll.

RightJim Christopher, Assistant Coach
Jim Christopher is commencing his initial
season as Assistant Basketball Coach of
Edinboro State College.

Prior to coming to

Edinboro, he served as assistant basketball
coach

at Carthage College in Kenosha,

Wisconsin for two years and at Zion-Benton
High School for two years.

HEAD HIGHLANDER BASKETBALL COACH

JAMES MCDONALD

Head Coach James McDonald will be embarking on his fifth
year as Highlander basketball mentor this season.
Prior to accepting his current position at Edinboro in 196I,
McDonald served as assistant basketball coach at Harborcreek High
School in Erie, Pa.

He is a 195^ graduate of Bridgeport High

School in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
As a player, Jim McDonald has been associated with the sport
of basketball for many years.

Jim attended West Virginia Wesleyan

College, where he participated as a varsity "Mountaineer” for 4
seasons.

During his collegiate basketball career McDonald was

selected as an All-American for 2 years by the UPI and the NAIA
as a result of his outstanding athletic abilities which he displayec
on the basketball court.

Jim reached the climax of his athletic

career with the Mountaineers in his senior year i960, when he was
ranked as the second leading scorer in the nation with his out
standing average of slightly over 33 points a game in regular
season competition.

In that same year, Jim was chosen to try out

for the United States Olympic Basketball Team at Denver, Colorado
in i960.

In addition, McDonald*s excellent performance in the

National NAIA Post-Season Basketball Tournament, held annually in
Kansas City, Mo., earned him the honor of being named to the NAIA’s
All-Tournament Team for 2 consecutive years, 1959 and i960.
In the period of only 4 years that Jim McDonald has functioned
as the head basketball coach of Edinboro State College, he has
-6-

accomplished much to improve the Highlander roundballers and their
athletic record.

Preceding his appointment as head coach in 1962,

ESC had registered only a single victorious season, but this ex
tremely poor record has been drastically altered during the
"McDonald Management,"

Currently, McDonald has compiled a

victorious season every year since his appointment as the Highlande
basketball coach and has registered a tally of 56 victories in
78 inter-collegiate encounters on his personal coaching record.
In addition, he coached the Edinboro squad this season, 1965-1966,
to its best record in basketball competition in the college's
history with a tally of 18 victories as compared to only 3
defeats in regular season competition.

This outstanding l8-3

record also earned the Highlanders their 3^d Western Division
PSCAC Basketball Championship in the past 4 seasons.
In the statistical department Coach McDonald's squads have
been responsible for establishing 7 major basketball achievements
in the ESC Athletic Record Book,

These recently registered

Highlander records by McDonald's teams include Most Rebounds in
One Game, Most Points and Field Goals Scored in One Game, Most
Field Goals in One Season, Most Total Points for One Season, and
Most Individual Total Points and Rebounds.

This list of newly

established athletic records under the "McDonald Management" is
considered by the ESC Athletic Department to be a firm indication
of the major role that Jim is performing to convert the Highlander
basketball squad into one of the finest teams in the PSCAC and
NAIA.
Last season, McDonald was named the NAIA's District 18
Basketball Coach of the Year.
>7 -

Jim's selection by the NAIA was

prompted as a result of his astonishing conversion of the ESC
basketball squad from just a "fair” team to one of the most
respected and feared squads in the PSCAC and the NMA in a
period of only 4 years.

In addition to this honor, McDonald was

also selected by the coaches of the Eastern Seaboard States to
be the Area 8 Basketball Coach of the Year and was honored as
on of the 9 finalists in the NAIA*s Coach of the Year poll for
his outstanding accomplishments in the coaching profession.

ASSISTANT HIGHLANDER BASKETBALL COACH

JAMES CHRISTOPHER

Commencing his first year as Assistant Highlander Basketball
Coach and Head Freshmen Coach Mr. James Christopher is optimistic
and looking forward to a gratifying season of basketball.

In ad

dition to his basketball duties, Christopher serves as Edinboro
State Collegers Head Baseball Coach.

Currently Mr. Christopher is

Head Resident of Reeder Hall and an Assistant in Admissions.
Christopher graduated from Lake View High School in Chicago,
Illinois in 1958.

Christopher gained recognition as both star

basketball and baseball player.

During his junior and senior years

at Lake View, Christopher was named to the All-North Section
Basketball team and elected to the All-City (Chicago) Roundball
team as a senior.
In addition to his basketball honors, Christopher was named
to the All-City (Chicago) Baseball team in both his junior and
senior years.

In his senior year Mr. Christopher was chosen

Athlete of the Year in the North Chicago Section.
Christopher proceeded to further his education at Carthage
College in Kenosha, Wisconsin where he earned varsity letters in
both basketball and baseball.

In his senior year he was named to

the Second Team NAIA District 20 basketball team.

He graduated

from Carthage College in 1962.
Prior to coming to Edinboro, Christopher was assistant basket
ball coach at his alma mater of Carthage College for two years.
Christopher then coached at Carthage High School as head basketball
- 9-

and baseball mentor.

Prom Carthage High, he ventured to Zion-

Benton High School as assistant basketball and baseball coach
for two years.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The 1966-67 edition of Edinboro*s Highlander basketball teain
will undergo a rebuilding program this season.
According to Head Coach Jim McDonald the team*s biggest
asset will be "desire."

In rating the team*s offensive abilities

Coach McDonald commented, "We have only fair speed, average
shooters, below average rebounders, and average ball handlers
with desire being our only strong point.

If we are going to win

this year all of these things, along with our defense, will have
to improve considerably before the season commences."
With only one letterman returning from last year’s NAIA
District 18 Championship basketball teeim, the Highlanders will
concentrate their rebuilding program around 13 sophomores and 2
Junior transfer basketball players.

Don Klingensmith, a transfer

student from Santa Anna College, California, and Tom Ritari,
transfer student from Ohio, will be the only Juniors on the team.
Lynn Nelson, the only returning letterman, will be the lone senior
on the 16-man varsity squad.
With the beginning of the second semester, Francis Hurley,
6*6" 195-1^. sophomore center, and Jerry Yoakem 6*2" 190-lb.
sophomore forward, will be eligible to play.
transfer students from Gannon College.

Both players are

These two boys should add

some strength to the Highlander rebounding, according to McDonald.
The Highlander team is suffering greatly as a result of
graduation and especially through academic ineligibility.
McDonald’s biggest task this season will be to find someone to

-12-

V

replace Darryl Meachem, who was selected to the Third Team NAIA
All-America team last season.

Due to below par academic standards

Meachem was not permitted to return to College this year.

Also,

Don Dougan, who was one of the teams top scorers last year, will
not be returning because of academic ineligibility.

The loss of

Dave Shenefelt and Jerry Banazak through graduation will be
another problems for the Highlander*s backcourt men to overcome.
The Highlanders will face a rugged 22 game schedule including
the Baldwin-Wallace Christmas Tournament^ Dec. 27.

Most teams in

the Conference will be tougher than last year with the possible
exception of Clarion who lost 4 of their 5 starters.

However,

Clarion has picked up several transfer students to bolster their
scoring attack.
As for the non-conference games, the Highlanders will engage
the annually powerful Mansfield Mountaineers and Cleveland State
University.

According to Coach McDonald, ’’Cleveland State will

be the toughest non-conference game this season."
At the moment the Highlander starting line up is undetermined
and will not be determined by McDonald until Nov. 30*
Jim McDonald will begin his fifth year as head mentor of the
Edinboro Cagers.

Over a 5-y68'r period McDonald’s teams have

compiled a total of 56 wins against 23 losses, won 3 Western
Division PSCAC Titles and tied the other year.
There is a saying in the sports world that if a team can win
at home and play .500 ball on the road chances of a good season
are high.

Last year they lost but 2 games at home and have never

lost more than 3 gomes at home in any of the past four years.

-13-

V

This season Mr. James Christopher is serving as head freshman
beisketball coach.

Coach Christopher will inherit a fine group of

basketball players who have good size, can shoot well and have
above-average speed.

Although there is not as much depth as in

the past, there are 6 or 7 outstanding varsity prospects.

Heading

the list is Walter Unich, 6*9" center who played his high school
ball in New Jersey; Dennis Jackson, 6*4" forward who also hails
from New Jersey; and Dave Hanna, 6* guard from New Kensington,
Pa.

These three boys form a good nucleus for Coach Christopher*s

freshman squad.
The frosh cagers will play a total of l8 games this season,
including a l4-game conference schedule.
Co-captains for this year*s varsity team are senior, letterman Lynn Nelson and junior transfer Don Klingensmith.

With the

season just three weeks away the team is practicing hard under
the watchful eyes of Coach McDonald and Coach Christopher in
preparation for their opening game against Mansfield College in
Crawford Gymnasium Dec. 1, at 8:15 P*ni.

1965-1966 BASKETBALL SEASON RESUME

Prior to the start of Edinboro State College’s I965-1966
basketball season. Head ‘Basketball Coach Jim McDonald expressed
the view that his 1965-I966 Highlanders were “just average.”
Considering his pre-season forecast, it would be an understatement
to say "the Highlanders developed into one of the finest basket
ball squads in the PSCAC and NAIA.”
Statistically, the 1965-I966 edition of the Highlanders
registered 16 victories and only 3 defeats in regular season
competition to surpass their 1964-1965 tally of 10 wins and 8
losses.
In Western Division PSCAC competition, the Highlanders
compiled 8 wins and only 2 defeats.

This record earned Edinboro

the 1965-1966 Western Division PSCAC Basketball Championship,
its third Western Division title in the past 4 seasons.
Following regular season competition the Highlanders competed
in the NAIA District 18 Basketball Play-offs held at Westminster
College, Feb. 28 - March 1.

In the first game of the play-offs

Edinboro defeated Geneva College 76-60 to advance to the finals
against California State College.

In the finals the Highlanders

trounced the California Vulcans, 79-62.

This victory officially

recognized the Edinboro Highlanders as NAIA District I8 Champion
ship Basketball Squad and earned ESC the right to represent
NAIA District 18 in the National NAIA Basketball Play-offs held
in Kansas City, Mo., on March 7-12.

-25-

The Highlanders were eliminated in the first round of the
National NAIA basketball tournament hy Central Michigan University
of Detroit, Michigan, 67-53.

landers were defeated 96-76 by Cheyney State College at Meadville
High School to determine the Pennsylvania State College Athletic
Conference Basketball Championship.
