Dear John;
I appreciate your sending the grant proposal, which I have
read and re-read with great enthusiasm. I hope you get an
affirmative reply on the workshop, and I look forward to
participating.
I have tried to gather a little information in order to
answer your question on the farm project, and in the process
I talked to Bernie Wingert, our County Agent. The only
person in Warren County whose name I had thought of turned
out to be the one Bernie recommended. He is Wallace H.
Barlow, and he can be addressed simply at Sugar Grove, Pa.
16350.’ Mr. Barlow gave a talk at one of our program meet
ings several years ago, during which he displayed hundreds
of wooden home and farm implements, part of his large collec
tion. Bernie says he is well-acquainted also with farm
building architecture and could probably be very helpful
to you.
If this lead does not prove satisfactory, perhaps your Erie
County agent could suggest someone. In addition, there is
a book available which you already may be familiar with.
If not, I think you will find the notes, the bibliography,
and the acknowledgments would provide some other good leads.
It is THE BARN, A VANISHING LANDMARK IN NORTH AMERICA, by
gric Arthur and Dudley Witney, A & W Visual Library, 1972,
This book was originally published in the hardbound edition
by the New York Graphic Society. The version cited above
is a large paperback. Both text and illustrations are
excellent.
9^® final possibility: If none of these sources pans out,
it is entirely possible that the Pennsylvania Historical
and Museum Commission might be able to provide a name or
names of experts to whom you could write; but at this point
it would seem that Wallace Barlow is the most likely source.
Sincerely yours.
