Head Coach
Joe Bressi
Joe Bressi is entering his second
season as head coach of the Huskies
after leading the team to one of its
finest seasons since the sport was
introduced as a varsity program at
Bloomsburg in 1970-71 . Under the
first-year mentor, the Huskies posted
a school-record 19 victories against
just six losses and made a first-ever
appearance in the Pennsylvania Conference tournament semifinals. A year
ago Bressi replaced Sue Hibbs who
returned to full-time teaching duties in
the university's department of health and physical education after 10
years as head coach.
Included among the team's 19·6 record last season was a 10-2 mark
in the conference's Eastern Division which helped the Huskies to a
first-place tie with West Chester.
Prior to taking the position at Bloomsburg, Bressi served as head
coach at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pa. for 10
seasons. While at Bishop McDevitt Bressi compiled an impressive
237·43 record, which included seven league titles and five P.I.A.A.
District 111 crowns. His units won four titles in the former South Central
Penn League and three championships in the Division I of the Mid·
Penn League.
In post-season action, Bishop McDevittcaptured three district Class
AA titles and two Class AAA first-place finishes. His teams appeared in
four consecutive P.I.A.A. Eastern finals, winning twice and advancing
to the state championship final game in those seasons. Bishop
McDevitt's best season under the coach was in 1983-84 when the
squad registered a 36·1 record , losing its lone contest to Pittsburgh's
North Catholic in the state AAA final.
The 40-year old native of Kulpmont, Pa. boasted one of the dominant
teams in the Harrisburg area for several seasons and in one stretch
during his tenure the teams won 91 of 92 regular season games. In his
final year as coach at the school his team posted a 22·8 mark and lost
in the District 111 playoffs. Bressi also served as director of students at
Bishop McDevitt.

SEASON OUTLOOK
Coming off the best record in the school's history with the return of three starters
has the Huskies expecting another outstanding season as they enter the
campaign. Under first-year head coach Joe Bressi, the club posted a school-record
19 victories against six losses and advanced to the Pennsylvania Conference
simifinals for the first time.
Ten of the wins came at the expense of PC Eastern Division opponents, giving
the Huskies a 10-2 mark, which helped them tie West Chester for the division crown.
The return of the three starters, including the nation's leading scorer among NCAA
Division II players Theresa Lorenzi, as well as a recruiting class that totals at least
eight new performers, has Bressi looking forward to another good year.
"Our success last year should be a real boost to this program," said Bressi. "With
the people we have back, along with what I consider a very good freshman class,
we expect to continue what we have begun to establish here."
Heading the list of players will be two-time all-conference selection Theresa
Lorenzi, who led the country with 25.9 p.p.g. average a year ago. The junior scored
648 points last season, one of the seven offensive standards she set last season.
she made 282 of 523 field goals and 84 of 107 free throws. She also established a
new single-game record for points with 36 and field goals 17, which occured on two
occasions. In just two seasons, she has moved into second on the school's all-time
scoring list with 1,005 points.
Point guard Carla Shearer enjoyed a fine season last year and earned allconference honors. She became more of a scoring threat as the season progressed and was the Huskies' floor leader. She was the only other player on the
squad to average double figures with an 11.6 p.p.g. average. She handed out a
school-record 103 assists and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game.
The Huskies' other four-year starter, along with Shearer, will be center Amy Wolf.
The unit's tallest player at 6'1 ", she smashed her own school record for blocked
shots by stopping 90 opponent field goal attempts last season. She led the team in
reboundng with 254 in the 25 games, an average of 10.2 per contest. Offensively,
she scored at a rate of 8.6 p.p.g.
A duo of veterans will be in the battle for the remaining starting berths. Forward
Karen Delullo, along with guard Pam Bressi, saw action last season. Delullo
averaged 1.7 p.p.g. and 1.7 rebounds. Bressi played behind Shearer at the point
guard spot and contributed 2.6 p.p.g ..
The Huskies' second-year coach made recruiting his main priority his main
priority since arriving at Bloomsburg, and his efforts seem to have paid off with the
inclusion of some talented newcomers on this year's roster.
"The experience and maturity that these new people will have to gain in the
season will determine just how good this team is going to be," said Bressi. "We have
a lot more depth than a year ago which will help tremendously. At times last season,
we had to be too conservative at crucial times, and it hurt us."
The addition of several guards should give Bressi the option of moving Shearer
off the top to a wing position and providing the Huskies with a fast lineup. Becky
Pigga is already accustomed to the fast-paced style the Huskies prefer as she
played in a similar offensive and defensive scheme in high school. She could be the
Huskies' starting point guard once the lineup is settled. Elaine Wolf is a solid allaround player who could play at either the point or off guard spot.
Nina Alston adds very good speed and quickness at the wing and, according to
Bressi, will see a lot of time on the floor. Barb Smith is a good outside shooter who
should see action as a role player in her first season.
One of the main concerns is on the front line where both Linda King and Susan
Kocher have graduated, creating a void that could provide a lot of playing time for
some of the freshmen. Barb Hall could start immediately at one of the forward
positions. The big, strong performer has several performers who could share time
with her on the inside. Sandy Herr, Donna Cooper, and Chris Sims all will see
playing time in the Huskies' fast-paced attack.
"Our defense finished the season as the fourth best in Division II, making
believers out of our veterans in what we were trying to to," said Bressi. "Once our
new players become accustomed to our style at both ends of the floor, we could be
as good or better than last season."
The young unit will be tested early as just two of the first nine games will be
played in the Huskies' Nelson Fieldhouse. Included among those contests are
road trips to two PC tournament participants last season, Lock Haven and Clarion.

PLAYER PROALES
Nina Alston
5'5" Freshman
Wayne, PA Conestoga H.S.

Could be the quickest member of
this year's team. Can be a very exciting offensive and defensive performer who will see a lot of time at a wing
position. Has good court awareness
and extremely quick hands and feet.
Good outside shooting skills and runs
the floor very well. She must become
_
more disciplined on defense but could give the opposition fits at both
ends of the floor.
Pam Bressi
5'5" Senior
Shamokin, PA, Lourdes Regional H.S.

One of the three seniors on this
year's team. She has been a member
of the unit in each of the last three seasons and should push for the starting
point guard role. Her good court sense
covers for a lack of quickness and, she
goes to the basket well on offense.
She has a good shooting touch from
the perimeter. Her leadership and
maturity should be of help on the young
team. Averaged 2.6 p.p.g. while playing in all but one of the Huskies' 25
games a year ago.
Donna Cooper
5'11" Freshman
Hanisburg, PA, Bishop McDevitt H.S.

One of several newcomers who could
see a lot of action in her first season
with the Huskies. Could mature into a
very good offensive player with some
added strength and confidence. Runs
the floor extremely well and is very
quick and smooth for a front line player.
She should provide the club with some
excellent defense and rebounding.
Karen DeLullo
5'8" Sophomore
Williamsport, PA, Williamsport H.S.

One of the top defensive performers
on this year's team. Height is her biggest disadvantage at the forward position she has to play. However, good
basics help her overcome that with
positioning and movement. She will
push for a starting role at the small
forward spot and will definitely get
more playing time than a year ago. Will
have to become more of an offensive
threat, because she may be called upon to score more this season.
Averaged 1.7 p.p.g. and 1.7 rebounds in 1986-87.
Barb Hall
6'0" Freshman
Watsontown, PA, Wanior Run H.S.

A big, strong performer who could
start immediately to strenghten the
Huskies' inside game. Has excellent
quickness and should fit extremely
well in the squad's defensive plans.
She faces the basket very well and
shoots the ball well away from the low
post. Must improve her shot selection
but could be a player who will make an impact in her first season.

7

Sandy Herr
5'10" Freshman
Jonestown, PA, Northern Lebanon H.S.

Another newcomer who will be in the
hunt for a berth in the starting lineup.
Will be a big help to the front line
situation whether she starts or comes
off the bench. An excellent rebounder
and defensive player who also shoots
well around the basket area. Needs to
work on her footwork and shot selection to insure a lot of playing time.

1

Theresa Lorenzi
5'9" Junior
Weston, PA, West Hazleton H.S.

If she comes close to her performance of last season, she should be a
bonafide All-American choice. Is rapidly becoming a complete player and
can be an asset to the Huskies in many
more ways than just scoring. She runs
the floor very well and improved her
defense and rebounding skills. Can
expect all kinds of different defenses
and double teaming. If she uses the
players around her effectively, she could enjoy another outstanding
season. Led the nation's Division 11 scorers with a 25.9 p.p.g. average.
In addition, she averaged 7 .1 rebounds and shot 53.9 percent from the
field. Set seven team offensive records a year ago and should become
the school's all-time leading scorer very early in the season.
Becky Plgga
5'4" Freshman
Dunmore, PA, Dunmore H.S.

Could very well be the Huskies' starting point guard right away. Will definitely see a lot of time on the court
immediately. Has excellent court awareness and is an extremely fine passer.
The quick, aggressive style she became accustomed to in high school
should make her transition an easy
one. Must become more of an offensive-minded player looking to take the open shot to keep the defense
honest.
Carla Shearer
5'6" Senior
Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg H.S.

One of the two four-year starters and
co-captains on this year's unit. She
had her best season a year ago and
was an all-conference selection. Will
probably move to a wing position this
year to utilize her shooting skills more
than in the past. Hermaturityandcourt
sense are big assets to the team on the
floor. Tough on defense and will be
looked to for coverage of the opponent's top outside threat. Good·
quickness and mobility. Good outside shooting range. Only player
other than Lorenzi to avenge double figures with 11 .6 p.p.g. and set a
new season record with 103 assists.
Chris Sims
5'10" Freshman
New Cumberland, PA Cedar Cliff H.S.

Is projected as a role player coming
off the bench to provide help with the
inside game. Can also take the ball
away from the basket area where she
has good shooting touch for a front line
player. Her defensive skills could get
her in games at crucial times, but she
must work to improve her quickness.

8

Barb Smith

5'8" Freshman
Manheim, PA, Manheim Central H.S.

Once she makes the adjustment to
collegiate basketball, she could be a
solid performer for the Huskies. Her
aggressive style should help overcome
any deficiencies, and she should see
action mainly as a role player in the
early going. A good outside shooter
but must improve her shot selection.
She must also become more disciplined at the defensive end of th e
floor.

Amy Wolf
6'1" Senior
Lancaster, PA Manheim Twp. H.S.

The Huskies' other four-year starter
and co-captain . Her performance last
season should boost her confidence
entering her final season. Long arms
make her an imposing figure inside
and help to alter opponent's shots.
Strong rebounder who should improve
her offensive capaabilities this season.
Good on defense in the low post but
needs work on her overall defensive
abilities. Needs to better her foot quickness and become more a part of
the break. Broke her own school record by blocking 90 shots a year
ago. Averaged 8.6 p.p.g. and 10.2 rebounds.
Elaine Wolf
5'7" Freshman
New Oxford, PA, New Oxford H.S.

An all-state performer a year ago in
high school who should get a lot of
playing time right awayforthe Huskies.
A solid, all-around player with good
handling and passing skills. Is projected into a wing position but will be
expected to perform some at the point
guard position. An excellent rebounder for her size and possesses a good
outside shot. Another one of the many
newcomers who should make an important contribution immediately.

Nelson Fieldhouse

The Nelson Fieldhouse, located on Bloomsburg University's
upper campus, serves as home for most of university's indoor
athletic events. The facility has all the necessary ingredients
as it holds a 3000-seat arena for all home wrestling and
basketball events, an indoor track, two tennis courts, an
olympic size swimming pool, and two handball/racquetball
courts. The building has classrooms and office for use by the
health/physical education and athletic staffs. Nelson also
houses the wrestling practice room, which is a fully padded
area located on the second floor. A totally-equipped Nautilus
room adds to the strength and conditioning area of the program, and Nelson also offers a training room staffed by two
tull-time physical therapists and no less than six student
assistants. Also located in the facility is an equipment manager who handles the needs of most of Bloomsburg's 18
varsity athletic teams.
