- - - - - Head Coach
Joe Bressi
Joe Bressi, head women's basketball coach at Bishop McDevitt High
School in Harrisburg for the past ten
years, takes over as head coach of
the women' s basketball program this
season at Bloomsburg. He replaces
Sue Hibbs, who resigned the position
to return to full-time teaching duties
in the university's department of
health and physical education.
As head coach at Bishop McDevitt, Bressi built an impressive
237-43 record, which included seven league titles and five district
crowns. His teams won four championships in the former South
Central Penn League and three titles in the Mid-Penn League's
Division I.
In post-season action, Bishop Mc Devitt captured three District
Three Class AA championships and two Class AAA titles. His units
appeared in four consecutive PIAA Eastern finals, winning twice
and advancing to the state championship contest in those seasons.
Bressi's best season was in 1983-84 when his team posted a 36-1
record, losing the lone game in the state AAA final to Pittsburgh's
North Catholic.
The 39-year-old native of Kulpmont, PA has boasted dominant
teams in the Harrisburg area for several years and entering this
past season's action his squads had won 91 of 92 regular-season
contests. Last season, the club had a 22-8 record and lost in
district playoffs.
Bloomsburg recorded a 9-13 mark last season, including an 8-5
record in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division. The
Huskies dropped a first-round decision to West Chester in the
conference playoffs.
Bressi is a 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg University and has
served as director of students at Bishop McDevitt.

- - - - Assistant Coaches
Julie Shumaker
Julie Shumaker was a former
player at Halifax High School and
Lock Haven University. She started as
the assistant coach at Halifax H.S.
before moving into the Head Coach
position at Mifflinburg H.S. for two
seasons. Shumaker will help coordinate the Huskies offense as well as
assist with recruiting.

Amy Fetter
Amy Fetter was voted M.V.P. at
Berwick H.S. her senior year and
went on to play her college basketball at Lock Haven University. She
has been in the Berwick School
District as the Head Junior High
School Coach for the past three
seasons. Fetter will work with the
Bloomsburg guards and will be in
charge of scouting future opponents.

2

Season Outlook
Instilling good work habits in his players will be the first goal of
Bloomsburg University's new head women's basketball coach Joe Bressi in
the 1986-87 season. Four of five starters return to give Bressi, who
ammassed an impressive 237-43 record in 10 years at Harrisburg (PA) Bishop
McDevitt High School, plenty of experience on the club.
"The attitude is good right now so we want to build and maintain good
habits," commented Bressi. "I want them to realize the difference between
just playing hard and working hard all the time. The future of the program is
already here. There is a good nucleus of seven players and only two of them
are seniors."
Quality performers at the point guard position should provide the
Huskies with a floor leader. Juniors Carla Shearer (5-7) and Pam Bressi (5-6)
will take care of the ballhandling chores for the squad. Shearer was one of
the three Huskies to average double figures a year ago scoring 10.0 points
per game while playing in all 22 contests. She led the team in assists with 62
and topped the regulars in free throw percentage at 70.8%. Bressi, who
struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, averaged 3.4 ppg.
"They're both very mature players and will have to be leaders on the floor,"
Bressi said. "As much as we will be changing defenses both will have to be
alert and into the game on the court as well as when they are sitting."
Senior Linda King (5-6) appears to be set in the off guard slot where she
averaged 8.3 ppg. and 3.5 rebounds during the 1985-a6 campaign. "She
shoots and hancHes the ball very well making her ideal for the number three
spot," said Bressi. "She'll play at the two guard, but I don't see a problem
because I expect a lot of the same things at those positions." Lori Pisco
(5-5), a player who saw very limited action last season, will back up King.
Replacing the school's all-atime leading scorer and rebounder Jean Millen
will be one of Bressi's major tasks as the new season begins. The two-time
Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division all-star scored 1,113 points and
grabbed 942 rebounds in her career. Veteran Susan Kocher (5-a) could fill
the spot in the early going, but a few newcomers will get a look from the
staff. Kocher and King are the lone seniors listed on the Bloomsburg roster.
The club's top scorer, Theresa Lorenzi (5-9), will be expected to supply
part of the offensive punch once again. She set a school record for a
freshman with 355 points, an average of 16.1 ppg. She was among the
leaders in the Pennsylvania Conference in field goal percentage at 55.1 % .
Lorenzi also pulled down 7.1 rebounds per contest. "Theresa can put a lot
of points on the board in a hurry," stated Bressi. "There is no question that
she is the player we expect to get us a casket when we need it."
Junior Amy Wolf (&-1), the team's tallest performer, will patrol the key at
the center position. She averaged 9.3 ppg. and 7.3 rebounds in the middle
last year. On defense she led the team in blocked shots with a school record
61. "We have to define her tasks," stated Bressi. "Rebounding the
basketball is a definite priority and we have to get good defense in the low
post. She will be very important to our success. We want to instill some
confidence and just let her play."
An overall lack of height could pose problems for the Huskies if Wolf
gets into foul difficulty, but the new coach's style of changing defenses
could help offset that deficiency. "We'll play man to man most of the time
and it will always be a full court game," Bressi said. "It should get us some
baskets off the defense."
Four newcomers could play key roles in the new coach's plans. Freshmen
Karen Delullo (5-9), Linda Steele (5-9), Vicki Snow (5-10), and Kathy
Woodward (5-6) all will get playing time for the Huskies and come from
sol id high school programs.
"All of our freshmen run the floor pretty well and will fit into the system
quite nicely," commented Bressi . "Our offense is very simple, we just need
people who want to run the floor. We want to score as much as possible at
the end of the break, but it's not going to be just throwing it up there. It will
be organized. It may take some adjustment on both sides, but we'll play my
style. This may be a better team in the second half of the season."
Last year the Huskies posted a 9-13 overall record, but won eight of
thirteen Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division games to tie with three
teams for the top spot. A first round playoff defeat at West Chester ended
the season.

Williamsport H.S.

Best player among the newcomers on
this year's team . Very intelligent performer who makes up for lack of size with
tough defense. Outstanding well-coached
high school player who will contribute
immediately. Plays well against bigger
people.

LINDA KING
5-6
Senior
Roslyn, PA
Bishop McDevitt H.S.
Guard#23
A solid wing player with three years of
experience. Looked to for on-court leadership and is a strong outside shooter.
Probably the best defensive player on the
club, but she will also be counted on to do
some scoring. Will be one of the squad's
co-captains. Averaged 6.3 ppg and 3.5
rebounds. In addition she had 44 assists
while starting in 22 games. Also holds BU
career record for assists with 173.

SUSAN KOCHER

Another four year player who makes up
for lack of size with good positioning and
smart inside play. Very disciplined performer at both ends of the floor. Should be a
good team leader as one of the cocaptains . Averaged 2.7 ppg and 2.4
rebounds last season.

THERESA LORENZI
5-9
Sophomore
West Hazleton H .S.
Weston, PA
Forward#11

Leading scorer from a year ago who has
a year of maturity and should be even
more of an offensive threat. Has worked
very hard to vastly improve her defense
and will also be expected to do a lot of
rebounding from her wing position . One of
the conference leaders in every offensive
category. Averaged 16.1 ppg and 7.1
rebounds. Shot 55 .1 % from the floor for
the season .

LORI PISCO
5-5
Senior
Minersville, PA
Guard#21

Minersville H.S.

Excellent role player who will come off
the bench in relief of the starters . She can
play at either the point or the off guard
slot. Adds quality depth to the lineup if
she stays healthy . Saw very limited
playing time last season.

CARLA SHEARER
5-6
Junior
Chambersburg, PA
Guard#35

Chambersburg H.S.

Starting point guard a year ago.
Extremely smart player with very quick
feet. She will run the offense once again
and she led the team in the assist category
last year. Averaged 10 ppg and 2.5
rebounds last season. Led the team with
62 assists, but must also cut down on high
number of turnovers . Was also the top
free throw shooter (70.8%) among the
regulars .

VICKI SNOW
5-10
Sophomore
Harrisburg, PA
Harrisburg H.S.
Center#S2

Should be the team's reserve center
behind veteran Amy Wolf. Looked to for
help with inside offensive game and
rebounding. Big, strong player who should
make an impact after she gets some
experience.

Upper Dublin H.S.
Forward#54

Promising newcomer who will fill in

game situations . Once she gets that
experience she could be tough. Must work
on rebounding.

AMY WOLF

u

Manheim Township H.S.

Key to success as the team's lone "big"
player. She will be counted on for the bulk
of the rebounding duties, hopefully picking up for the loss of the school's all-time
leading rebounder, Jean Millen. Must
avoid any foul difficulties if the team is to
be successful. Averaged 9.3 ppg and 7.3
rebounds a year ago. Set a school season
record for blocked shots with 61 in '85-'86.

KATHY WOODWARD

NELSON FIELDHOUSE
"Home of the Huskies"
The Nelson Fieldhouse, located on Bloomsburg University's
upper campus, serves as home for most of BU's athletic events.
The facility has all the necessary ingredients as it holds a 3,000 seat
arena for all home wrestling and basketball games, an indoor
track, two tennis courts, an olympic size swimming pool, and two
handball/racquetball courts. The building has classroom and
office space for use by the health/physical education and athletic
staffs. Nelson also houses the wrestling practice room, which is a
fully padded area located on the second floor. A totally equipped
Nautilus weight room adds to the strength and conditioning areas
of the program, and Nelson also offers a training room staffed by a
full-time physical therapist and no less than six student assistants.
Also an equipment manager handles the needs of most of
Bloomsburg's 18 varsity athletic programs.
