BLOOMSBURG
STATE
COLLEGE
Captains Hilarie Runyon (top) and
Jeanne Radcliff (bottom)
WOMEN'S
BASKETBALL
1982-83
Outlook
Head coach Sue Hibbs and her Bloomsburg State College women's
basketball team will look to their inside strength to carry them through
a tougti 1982-83 schedule, which includes, for the first time ever,
Division I powerhouse Cheyney State.
The Huskies have lost only two seniors from last year's 6-13 squad
and return their top three scorers and rebounders.
Co-Captain Hilarie Runyon was the team leader in rebounds with
222 (11 .7 rebounds per game) and blocked shots with 36 in 1981-82, as
well as second in scoring with 11 .3 points per game. The senior center
set new team records with her rebounds and blocked shots.
The Bloomsburg frontline also includes senior Diane Alfonsi and
sophomore co-captain Jeanne Radcliff.
Alfonsi was Bloomsburg 's leading scorer last year with 12.6 ppg.
and set a new BSC season mark with 240 points. She also set a new
team record with 95 steals and was the Huskies' second-leading
rebounder with 173.
The 6-0 Radcliff is coming off a fine freshman year in which she
played in all of BSC's 19 games and averaged 7.3 points and 7.9
rebounds per game. Radcliff set the Bloomsburg record for most
points scored by a freshman with 139.
The Huskies' backcourt will be led by junior Pam Brosky. The 5-7
Brosky was the team's third leading scorer last season (10.1 ppg .) and
set a new team record by handing out 93 assists.
Other returnees from last year's squad include senior forward Julie
Loucks , junior forward Jane Ludrof and senior guard Maureen
McDonald , who was injured much of last year and played in only six
games.
Hibbs also expects the efforts of several talented returnees from last
year's junior varsity squad to aid in the Husky cause. Sophomore
center Sarah Hackforth was second on the JV team in both scoring and
rebounding . Junior center Sue Knapp was the JV team leader in
rebounds and blocked shots with 59 and 12 respectively, while
sophomore guard Sabrina McChesney was third on the team in
scoring .
Hibbs, in her seventh season as Bloomsburg's head coach , also has
three highly touted newcome, s. Freshman guard Kris Zimmerman ,
sophomore , forward Tracey Kiriluk and freshman forward Jean Millen
are all looking for starting spots. Zimmerman was an All-Star in
basketball, softball and volleyball and played on a District
Championship basketball team at Henderson High School. Kiriluk is in
her rookie season for the Huskies as a sophomore . The 5-9 Millen will
provide Bloomsburg with more board strength after being the top
player in the Lehigh Valley in 1981-82 at Whitehall High School.
Hibbs and first year assistant coach Steve Augustine, will only have
a varsity team to work with as the junior varsity program has been
eliminated .
Head Coach
SUE HIBBS is in her seventh season at
the helm of the Huskies. Her first year was
as an interim coach in 1975-76 when
Joanne McComb, now Associate Athletic
Director, was on leave of absence.
Bloomsburg 's record that year was 11-2
and a fourth place in the EAIAW Invitational.
The following year she was an assistant coach under McComb and
then became head coach at the start of the 1977-78 season . In that year •
the Huskies posted a 9-6 mark, followed by a 7-9 record and 7-10 in
1979-80, and a year ago BSC posted a 6-11 mark. Hibbs' overall record,
including post-season action, is 46 wins against 52 losses.
Prior to coming to BSC, she had a 40-16 high school coaching
record at Berlin , NH where her teams participated in the state tourney
three of the four years.
A native of Kentucky, Hibbs earned her B.S. degree at Western
Kentucky and her M.S. degree from East Stroudsburg .
Assistant Coach
Steve Augustine is in his first year as
assistant women's basketball coach for the
Huskies. He is a senior business administration student at BSC.
Augustine is a native of Kennett
Square, PA and expects to graduate in May
1983.
