BASKETBALL
1981-82
Outlook
Co-captains Hilarie Runyon and Trina Knittel lead a group of key
returnees for the Huskies who are out to improve upon their 6-11 mark
of a year ago.
Runyon performed in all 17 contests last season scoring 202 points
(11.9 ppg) on 75 of 226 field goals and 52 of 71 tree throws. She led the
team in rebounding (201) with an 11.8 average ·and holds the school
season record in that category.
Knittel also saw action in every contest connecting on 76 of 166
field goal attempts and 11 of 19 charity tosses for 163 points (9.6 ppg).
She tied for the team lead in blocked shots with 16.
Four juniors are expected to play a large role in the Huskies'
successes this season. They are guards Sue Hicks (3.4 ppg), and
Maureen McDonald (3.8 ppg) as well as forwards Julie Loucks (1.4 ppg)
and Diane Alfonsi (5.4 ppg).
Graduation claimed two of BSC's top performers. Gone are guard
Mindy Leri! and forward Kathy Palubinsky who were among the leaders
in eight of nine statistical categories a year ago.
Many new players have joined this year's squad in an effort to make
up for the loss of the two standouts.
Jeanne Radcliff, a graduate of Trinity High School and Pam Brosky,
a transfer from Delaware, should see a lot of playing time along with
forwards Anita Aungst and Maureen McCaffrey and guard Connie
Stoddard. Center Sarah Hackforth and guards Sebrina McChesney and
Denise Basso will probably perform with the junior varsity to gain
needed experience and playing time.
Newcomer West Chester will be part of a competitive 18 game
schedule and in addition, BSC will join Canisius, Davis & Elkins, and
the host Rockets in the Slippery Rock Tournament.
Head Coach
MS. SUE HIBBS is in her sixth season at the
helm of the Huskies. Her first year was as
an interim coach in 1975-76 when Joanne
McComb, now Associate Athletic Director,
was on leave of absence. Bloomsburg's
record that year was 11-2 and a fourth place
in the EAIAW Invitational.
The following year she was an assistant
coach under McComb and then became
head coach at the start of the 1977-78
season. In that year the Huskies posted a
9-6 mark, followed by a 7-9 record and 7-10
in 1979-80 and a year ago BSC posted a 6-11 mark. Hibbs' overall
record, including post-season action, is 40 wins against 39 losses.
Prior to coming to BSC, she had a 40-16 high school coaching record
at Berlin, NH where her teams participated in the state tourney three of
the four years.
A native of Kentucky, Hibbs earned her B.S. degree at Western
Kentucky and her M.S. degree from East Stroudsburg.
Assistant Coach
CHRIS DAYMONT is in her first year as
assistant women's basketball coach. She
played four years of collegiate basketball
at Hartwick and Cortland State.
She comes to BSC from St. Olaf (Minnesota) College where she was assistant
coach for one year before accepting the
head coaching job for two seasons in
which she led the Oles to consecutive 4th
place finishes in the state tournament.
