WOMEN'S
BASKETBALL
1980-81

Basketball Outlook
Coach Sue Hibbs has some big gaps to fill, due to the graduation of
four players, if the Huskies are going to improve upon their 7-10 record
of a year ago.
Gone from last year's squad are P. C. Lyons, Sally Houser, Gail
Hopkins, and Loretta Sutcliffe, a group that led in eight of nine
statistical categories in the 1979-80 season. This foursome also
accounted for over half of the points scored by BSC and one-third of
the team's rebounds.
Leading the veterans returning to this year's squad are co-captains
Mindy Lerit and Trina Knittel.
Lerit, one of only two seniors on the team, was the second leading
scorer last season with an average of 10.9 points per game while
scoring 186 points in the 17 games at a guard position. Knittel, a
junior, led the team in free throw percentage a year ago hitting on 72%
of her charity tosses. The forward-center averaged 4.6 points in all 17
games in 1979-80,
The second leading rebounder on last year's team, Hilarie Runyon,
also returns. As a freshman forward, she collected 124 rebounds for an
average of 7.3 a game.
The addition of Kathy Palubinsky, a transfer from Elizabethtown, is
expected to give the Huskies a lot of help on the front line.
Five sophomores who are expected to see a lot of action this season
include Julie Loucks, Diane Alfonsi, Sue Hicks, Cheryl Sedlak, and
Debbie Thom.
Loucks and Alfonsi led in eight out of nine statistical categories for
last season's BSC junior varsity team . Alfonsi was the squad's leading
scorer with a 12.1 average and led the Huskies in rebounding, getting a
commendable 15.4 per game. Loucks was third in both scoring and
rebounding with averages of 9.3 and 5.3 respectively. The duo also
combined for 49 steals last season.
Hicks averaged 3.4 points a game in 14 varsity games for the
Huskies while Sedlak scored an average of 5.3 in 15 contests. She was
second in steals with 36 and also second in the assist column with 42
in the 79-80 season. Thom was the second leading rebounder on last
year's junior varsity team with an average of 9.8 per game.
Hibbs will also be looking forward to the play of four freshmen
recruits . Kathy Kashner, Sue Knapp, Mary Hassenplug, and Jane
Ludrof are expected to apply pressure to the veterans for the five
starting spots.
Hibbs will be assisted by Lisa Hand, a 1979 graduate of Lock Haven
State College, who is also BSC's assistant field hockey coach and
head coach of the lacrosse team.

Head Coach
MS. SUE HIBBS is in her fifth season at the
helm of the Huskies. Her first year was as
an interim coach in 1975-76 when Joanne
McComb, now Associate Athletic Director,
was on leave of absence. Bloomsburg's
record that year was 11-2 and a fourth place
in the EAIAW Invitational.
The following year she was an assistant
coach under McComb and then became
head coach at the start of the 1977-78
season. In that year the Huskies posted a
9-6 mark, followed by a 7-9 record two years
ago and 7-10 last season. Hibbs' overall record, including post-season
action, is 35 wins against 29 losses.
Prior to coming to BSC, she had a 40-16 high school coaching record
at Berlin, NH where her teams participated in the state tourney three of
the four years.
Ms. Hibbs has had a number of years of teaching, playing and
coaching a variety of sports. In the spring of 1977, she served as the
college's first women's softball coach. Off-season she is a field
hockey official with the Columbia-Montour Chapter of PIAA.
A native of Kentucky, Hibbs earned her B.S. degree at Western
Kentucky and her M.S. degree from East Stroudsburg.
