WOMEN'S
BASKETBALL
SEASON'S OUTLOOK
With the loss of seven graduates from last year's team, the
1979-80 edition of the women's cage team will have many new
faces . The challenge of an expanded schedule, including some
new team events, and the aim of reversing last year's losses have
set an exciting tone for the season according to Coach Sue Hibbs.
The first losing season in a decade was registered in the
1978-79 campaign . Yet, the 7-9 record was tempered by a number of close games against a schedule of high calibre teams .
Four losses were decided by a combined total of five or less points.
Last year's balanced attack was led by seniors Terry McHale
(10.0 p .p .g.) and Jayne Yurasits (9.5 p.p.g.), who were followed by returnees Sally Houser (9.4 p.p.g.) and Patty Lyons (also
9.4 p.p.g .). Lyons also set new marks in season ( 188) and single
game rebound (26) totals, while Yurasits established a new
career high in assists ( 119). Senior Sue Mc Keegan led the
seasonal assists tally (37) and was second in free throw percentage (75 %) to Donna Santa Maria (80%).
Veteran Lynda Wiest, who made a key contribution to the
inside game, returns to the hardwoods this year as assistant
coach. Lynda, a Williams Valley High School graduate, will be
at the helm of the J.V. team.
An extensive recruiting effort has added eleven freshmen
to th e team. Included are: 5'8" Diane Alfonsi, an Al I-Star
f orwa rd from Pottsville; 5'5" guard Rosemary Grulee, Penn
Argyl, a M .V.P. in three sports; 5'9" forward Julie Loucks
from leag ue runners-up York Suburban; 5'11" center Hilarie
Runyan, Bernardsville, NJ, all-conference at Bernard High;
5'7" guard/forward Cheryl Sedlak from the District 12 champion Bi shop o· Reilly; and 5'11" center Debbie Thom, an AllCatholic basketball and volleyball player from Philadelphia.
The prem iere ingredients that are spicing the coming
season include : the first year of divisional championships in
the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women; the
Division 111 finals for the region to be played at Millersville
State; and the fir st Pennsylvania Conference title play to be
hosted by Cheyney State February 22-23.
Th e Hu skies will host alumni players on December 2 and
BSC's first Invitationa l tourney the 7th and 8th of December.
This " Four States" event will pit Ithaca College of New York
against Salisbury State of Maryland in the 7:00 p.m. opener
and BSC versus the Trenton State College team of N ew Jersey
at 9:00 p.m. In addition to these innovations, King's College
of Scranton and L ock Haven State have been added to the
schedule.
COACH
MS. SUE HIBBS is in her fourth
season at the helm of the Huskies.
Her first year was as an interim coach
in 1975-76 when Joanne McComb,
now Associate Athletic Director,
was on leave of absence. Bloomsburg's record that year was 11-2
and a fourth place in the EIAIW
Invitational.
Th e following year she was an
assistant coach under McComb and
then became head coach at the
start of the 1977-78 season. With records of 7-9 last year and
9-6 two years ago, Hibbs' overall record including post-season
action is 30 wins against 19 losses.
Prior to coming to BSC, she had a 40-16 high school coaching record at Berlin, NH where her teams participated in the
state tourney three of the four years.
Ms . Hibbs has had a number of years of teaching, playing and
coaching a variety of sports. In the spring of 1977, she served as
the college's first women's softball coach. Off-season she is a field
hockey official with the Columbia-Montour Chapter of PIAA.
A native of Kentucky, Hibbs earned her B.S. degree at
Western Kentucky and her M.S. degree from East Stroudsburg .
She is taking additional studies at Penn State.
Her office phone is 717-389-2410.
