BLOOMSBURG ST A TE COLLEGE
Nelson
Fieldhouse
WINTER VARSITY ' SPORTS 1976-77
Dr. Conrad A. Bautz
Head Coach
Dr. Conrad A.
Bautz was appointed Chairman, Department of Health,
Physical Education, and Athletics
in June, 1972. A
1956 Brooklyn College graduate, he
served at his Alma
Mater in a number
of capacities prior
to coming to Bloomsburg.
Dr. Bautz is responsible for the
administration and supervision of the
total physical education and athletic
program at the college, including
varsity athletics. H. Cecil Turberville
serves as assistant athletic director.
After five years
as head coach at
Bloomsburg State,
Charles Chronister
and his varsity
players and coaches have compiled
an 88-38 win-loss
record for a very
enviable .698 winning percentage.
During this time,
his teams have won numerous
in-season tournaments, established
30 team and individual Bloomsburg
State records, participated in four
consecutive post-season tournaments, and had the first Bloomsburg
State team to win the NCAA Regional
Tournament and go on to Evansville
for the National Championship Tournament.
Chronister is active in the National
Coaches Association as the Chairman
of the Hall of Fame Committee for
District II of the NCAA; is invited as a
guest lecturer at many of the best
basketball schools and camps in the
East; in May of 1974 spent two weeks
in Brazil presenting clinics to players
and coaches; was a guest lecturer at
the prestigious Medalist Coaches

Clinic in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in
October of this year; and during the
summer of 1976 directed the first
HUSKY BASKETBALL SCHOOL on
the campus of Bloomsburg State.
A native of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Chronister attended Bermudian
Springs High School where he was a
standout athlete. He matriculated at
East Stroudsburg State College and
played varsity basketball and baseball
for the Warriors. He earned both his
Bachelor of Science and Master of
Science degrees in Health and
Physical Education at ESSC.
During the 1962-63 season at East
Stroudsburg, he served as freshman
basketball coach and guided the team
to a 17-2 record. He went to
Gettysburg after three successful
years at Hanover (Pa.) High School. At
Hanover, his jayvee and varsity teams
were 59-9 while winning county
championships and participating in
the PIAA District Ill Class A playoffs.
Coach Chronister joined the
Bloomsburg faculty during the summer of 1971 coming from Gettysburg
College where he was the assistant
basketball coach for four years. In
addition to coaching the freshman
team at Gettysburg, one of his chief
responsibilities was recruiting talent
for head coach Bob Hulton. This
aspect of his coaching background
has been most valuable to Bloomsburg State as he and assistant coach
Burt Reese have filled the team roster
with outstanding athletes in their
quest to maintain and improve one of
the outstanding small college basketball programs in the East.
Chronister is married to the former
Carol L. Strausbaugh of hanover, Pa.
They have two daughters, Lee Ann,
age 9, and Caryn Lynn, age 7. The
Chronisters reside at 1248 Old Berwick
Road, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
Assistant Varsity Coach
After coaching
the Bloomsburg
freshman teams to
83 victories against
only 27 defeats
over a seven year
span, Burt Reese
moved into a different role last
season with the
basketball program. "While Burt
did a fantastic job with the freshmen,
the contributions he made to the
varsity team, working fulltime with
them, were tremendous. He will
continue to coordinate our recruiting
efforts and hopefully enjoy the same
success in the future that has provided
our program with outstanding athletes
the past years."
The preceding statement and the
opinion expressed many times by
Coach Chronister that Reese is the
"best assistant coach anyone could
want" should become more evident
during the season.
A native of Taylor, Pennsylvania, he
received both his Bachelor of Science
and his Master of Education degrees
at East Stroudsburg State College. At
ESSC he assisted in the basketball
and tennis programs as a graduate
assistant.
After leaving ESSC, he joined the
faculty of Old Forge (Pa.) High School
where he was assistant basketball and
football coach. He was next Athletic
Director, tennis and assistant basketball coach at Abington Heights High
School, Clarks Summit (Pa.) for 3½
years.
Reese, his wife Marion, and their
year old daughter, Meredith, reside in
Scenic Knolls near Bloomsburg.
Freshmen Coach
During the past
11
years,
Dr.
Michael Herbert
has served in numerous capacities on
the basketbal I staff,
and he is in his
second season as
the
freshman
coach. Along with
this added responsibility, "Doc" will
continue to aid the varsity team as a
practice and game assistant. His
knowledge and enthusiasm for the
game will be an even more significant
asset to the program than it has in the
past!
A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania,
Herbert received his degrees at the
University of Maryland and Lehigh
University. He is a professor of
Biology .

1976-77 Outlook
Six returning lettermen, a couple of
transfers, candidates from a successful junior varsity team, and a good
crop of freshmen recruits point to
bright prospects for BSC having its
11th consecutive winning season.
Leading the returning players are
seniors Jerry Radocha, a 6'5" forward
and All-American candidate, and Rick
Evans, a 6'2" forward. The balance of
the lettermen nucleus is composed of
senior 6' Rick Joseph, and juniors 6'5"
Steve Bright, 6'5" Jeff Slocum, and
6'5" Al Williams.
The Huskies ~ave added transfers
Harry Warren, a junior guard from the
University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee,
and Larry Krizansky, a sophomore
center from West Chester State
College. The only player lost from last
year's team is Rich Yanni who led the
team in assists with 123. The above
group will be bolstered by the
candidates from last year's 12-3 junior
varsity team and some outstanding
freshmen recruits.
When Bloomsburg opens its season
at home against Lock Haven on
November27, CoachCharlesChronister
will be aiming for his sixth successful
season since taking over the reigns of
the Huskies in 1971. Under Chronister's
guidance, the Maroon and Gold cagers
have an 88-38 win-loss record for a
.698 winning percentage. The Huskies
were 13-1 Oduring last year's campaign.
"We have a difficult schedule this
year as our traditional rivals will be
strong, and we have added newcomers
such as University of Scranton who
was the NCAA Division Ill national
champion, King's, Bucknell, and
Lynchburg," Chronister said. "We are
looking forward to this competition
with eagerness, and we should be very
competitive."

With al I players from last year's 11-2
team eligible to return, the BSC
women's basketball team will face its
most challenging sched1:1le in the
history of the sport with a degree of
confidence. Three new teams of
LaSalle University, Shippensburg, and
the University of Scranton have been
added to the highly competitive
schedule.
"Although we may not be able to
maintain a won-lost record that is as
impressive as ones in the past, we feel
that the increased intensity of the
competition we will face should
provide a highly interesting season of
basketball," Joanne McComb, the
Huskiettes' head coach, remarked.
Additional upgrading of the basketball program is evident with Susan
Hibbs being added to the coaching
staff.
"All of us connected with this year's
program view the upcoming season as
the ultimate in challenges," McComb
added.

Head Coach
J
Eli Mclaughlin
reached a milestone in his men's
swimming and diving coaching career
when the Huskies
defeated Shippensburg last January
to earn him his
100th career coaching victory.
He is starting his
16th season as the head coach of the
Huskies. Although BSC dropped to
5-8 last season, the Huskies had
recorded 10 consecutive winning
campaigns prior to the 1975-76
season. Bloomsburg has a 102-71-2
record under McLaughlin's leadership.
During his years as coach,
Mclaughlin has helped develop six
All-Americans. They were: Rich
Kozicki, Stu Marvin, Jim Balchunas,
Wayne Richards, Keith Torok, and
Dave Gibas. He has also coached
several Pennsylvania Conference
champions.
Mclaughlin received both his
Bachelor of Science and Master of
Education degrees from West Chester
State College and has taken additional
work towards his doctorate at West
Virginia University. He is an associate
professor in the Health and Physical
Education Department and is also the
Director of Aquatics at the college.
Mclaughlin served as varsity line
coach for three years (1961-63),
assistant baseball coach (1965), and
head basebal I coach (1967).
His background both as a swimming coach and as an official has been
quite extensive. Mclaughlin is married to the former Patricia Repash and
they have two daughters, Beth age 17,

"The 1976-77 Bloomsburg State
College men's swimming and diving
season will be very interesting," Eli
McLaughlin, who has coached the
Huskies for the last 15 campaigns,
remarked.
Early indications definitely project
that the Huskies should be relatively
strong and ready to challenge any
opponent on their schedule.
"We are looking forward to another
great year in individual performances
with hopes that enough team
members will put it all together to
enable the team to win," McLaughlin
added.
Experienced team members who
have participated in dual, state, and
national competition are seniors Doug
Thran and Stu Marvin, juniors Gary
Havens, Keith Torok, and Jim
Balchunas, and sophomores Wayne
Richards, Steve Price, Curt Moore,
Dan Steel, Dietrich Lichtner, Kevin
Myers, and Brian Cox. Richards is the
captain.
Torok, Richards, Balchunas, and
Marvin have also gained All-American
honors for past achievements.
"The past is history now. We are
interested in attaining new records,
goals, and gaining even greater
recognition for our program,"
McLaughlin and Richards commented.
Adding additional strength to the
returning varsity team will be
sophomore Kevin Johnson, and
freshmen Mike Bower, Guy Campbell,
Pete Dardaris, Eric Slingerland, Scott
Wiegand, and Mark Robinson.
This year's manager is Bruce
DeHaven.

Head Coach
Roger B. Sanders
starts his fifth season as the head
coach of the Huskies.
His 1975-76 record of 9-8-1 raised
his four-year record to 43-22-2. The
Huskies are trying
to achieve their
fourth consecutive
winning season under his leadership.
Last season his squad placed third
in the Pennsylvania Conference and at
the University of Delaware Invitational,
fourth at the Bucknell Invitational, and
fifth in the Eastern Wrestling League.
The future of wrestling at BSC looks
very good because the freshmen and
sophomore wrestlers won the Keystone Invitational tournament.
The Huskies were 16-3 during the
1973-74 season and defeated an
Athletes in Action team. The 16
official victories established a BSC
record for team wins in a season. The
team also captured the United States
Coast Guard Invitational, placed third
in the Pennsylvania Conference,
fourth in the Wilkes Open, and fifth in
14
the NCAA Division II Championships.
Bloomsburg joined the NCAA Division
I last season.
A native of Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, Sanders graduated from West
Chester State College where he won
three Middle Atlantic University
Division Championships and a NCAA
College Division Championship. During his four years of collegiate
wrestling, he never lost a dual meet.
He is a member of the West Chester
State College Hall of Fame.
He is married to the former Nancy E.

Undefeated his junior and senior years
in dual matches, he continued this
string the first two years of collegiate
wrestling at Muskingum College
where he was a letter winner for four
years.
While he and his wife Judy, the
former Judith L. Spillard of South
Euclid, Ohio, were earning their
master's degrees, Walker spent one
year as assistant wrestling coach at
William Tennant High School, Warminster, Pennsylvania. His doctorate
in educational psychology was earned
at Temple University in 1973.
"Calvin takes care of the details that
could hamper ourprogram and keeps
things moving along smoothly,
commented Coach Sanders.
The Walkers reside in Danville,
Pennsylvania, with their two sons
Brent and P0ss, ages eight and five.
This is Walker's third year of assisting

1959-60 along with a NAIA title in the
latter year.
He taught and coached in Montgomery High School from 1960-63

1976-77 Outlook
With about half of his 40 candidates
being freshmen, Coach Roger Sanders
expects the Huskies to have a
comparatively young team for the
1976-77 campaign.
However, to brighten the picture,
five wrestlers who were red-shirted
during the 1975-76 season will be back
in uniform. Included in this group are
the following who have their last year
of eligibility noted : junior Tom Fink ,
118-126; and sophomores Carl Poff,
134, Mike Snyder and John Rogers,
177, and Mark Harkins at 150. Fink and
Poff are expected to help the team at
the weights where the Huskies
performed under .500 .
The lone senior on the squad is
Dave Mccollum who performed at 118.
Sanders will be counting heavily on
middleweight performers
Tony
Caravella and Andy Cappelli as well as
upperweighters Tino DiMarco and Mel
Sharp. Steve Scheib, the 177
Pennsylvania Conference· champion
and the Eastern Wrestling League
runnerup will red-shirt this year.
Sanders expects the Huskies to gain
experience as the season progresses,
making their presence known-particularly in the latter part of the
season. The Huskies compete in
NCAA Division I and are members of
the Pennsylvania Conference and
Eastern Wrestling League.
Dr. Bautz presents the PC 3rd place
trophy to the team.

Dr. Conrad A. Bautz
Head Coach
Dr. Conrad A.
Bautz was appointed Chairman, Department of Health,
Physical Education, and Athletics
in June, 1972. A
1956 Brooklyn College graduate, he
served at his Alma
Mater in a number
of capacities prior
to coming to Bloomsburg.
Dr. Bautz is responsible for the
administration and supervision of the
total physical education and athletic
program at the college, including
varsity athletics. H. Cecil Turberville
serves as assistant athletic director.
After five years
as head coach at
Bloomsburg State,
Charles Chronister
and his varsity
players and coaches have compiled
an 88-38 win-loss
record for a very
enviable .698 winning percentage.
During this time,
his teams have won numerous
in-season tournaments, established
30 team and individual Bloomsburg
State records, participated in four
consecutive post-season tournaments, and had the first Bloomsburg
State team to win the NCAA Regional
Tournament and go on to Evansville
for the National Championship Tournament.
Chronister is active in the National
Coaches Association as the Chairman
of the Hall of Fame Committee for
District II of the NCAA; is invited as a
guest lecturer at many of the best
basketball schools and camps in the
East; in May of 1974 spent two weeks
in Brazil presenting clinics to players
and coaches; was a guest lecturer at
the prestigious Medalist Coaches

Clinic in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in
October of this year; and during the
summer of 1976 directed the first
HUSKY BASKETBALL SCHOOL on
the campus of Bloomsburg State.
A native of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Chronister attended Bermudian
Springs High School where he was a
standout athlete. He matriculated at
East Stroudsburg State College and
played varsity basketball and baseball
for the Warriors. He earned both his
Bachelor of Science and Master of
Science degrees in Health and
Physical Education at ESSC.
During the 1962-63 season at East
Stroudsburg, he served as freshman
basketball coach and guided the team
to a 17-2 record. He went to
Gettysburg after three successful
years at Hanover (Pa.) High School. At
Hanover, his jayvee and varsity teams
were 59-9 while winning county
championships and participating in
the PIAA District Ill Class A playoffs.
Coach Chronister joined the
Bloomsburg faculty during the summer of 1971 coming from Gettysburg
College where he was the assistant
basketball coach for four years. In
addition to coaching the freshman
team at Gettysburg, one of his chief
responsibilities was recruiting talent
for head coach Bob Hulton. This
aspect of his coaching background
has been most valuable to Bloomsburg State as he and assistant coach
Burt Reese have filled the team roster
with outstanding athletes in their
quest to maintain and improve one of
the outstanding small college basketball programs in the East.
Chronister is married to the former
Carol L. Strausbaugh of hanover, Pa.
They have two daughters, Lee Ann,
age 9, and Caryn Lynn, age 7. The
Chronisters reside at 1248 Old Berwick
Road, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
Assistant Varsity Coach
After coaching
the Bloomsburg
freshman teams to
83 victories against
only 27 defeats
over a seven year
span, Burt Reese
moved into a different role last
season with the
basketball program. "While Burt
did a fantastic job with the freshmen,
the contributions he made to the
varsity team, working fulltime with
them, were tremendous. He will
continue to coordinate our recruiting
efforts and hopefully enjoy the same
success in the future that has provided
our program with outstanding athletes
the past years."
The preceding statement and the
opinion expressed many times by
Coach Chronister that Reese is the
"best assistant coach anyone could
want" should become more evident
during the season.
A native of Taylor, Pennsylvania, he
received both his Bachelor of Science
and his Master of Education degrees
at East Stroudsburg State College. At
ESSC he assisted in the basketball
and tennis programs as a graduate
assistant.
After leaving ESSC, he joined the
faculty of Old Forge (Pa.) High School
where he was assistant basketball and
football coach. He was next Athletic
Director, tennis and assistant basketball coach at Abington Heights High
School, Clarks Summit (Pa.) for 3½
years.
Reese, his wife Marion, and their
year old daughter, Meredith, reside in
Scenic Knolls near Bloomsburg.
Freshmen Coach
During the past
11
years,
Dr.
Michael Herbert
has served in numerous capacities on
the basketbal I staff,
and he is in his
second season as
the
freshman
coach. Along with
this added responsibility, "Doc" will
continue to aid the varsity team as a
practice and game assistant. His
knowledge and enthusiasm for the
game will be an even more significant
asset to the program than it has in the
past!
A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania,
Herbert received his degrees at the
University of Maryland and Lehigh
University. He is a professor of
Biology .

1976-77 Outlook
Six returning lettermen, a couple of
transfers, candidates from a successful junior varsity team, and a good
crop of freshmen recruits point to
bright prospects for BSC having its
11th consecutive winning season.
Leading the returning players are
seniors Jerry Radocha, a 6'5" forward
and All-American candidate, and Rick
Evans, a 6'2" forward. The balance of
the lettermen nucleus is composed of
senior 6' Rick Joseph, and juniors 6'5"
Steve Bright, 6'5" Jeff Slocum, and
6'5" Al Williams.
The Huskies ~ave added transfers
Harry Warren, a junior guard from the
University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee,
and Larry Krizansky, a sophomore
center from West Chester State
College. The only player lost from last
year's team is Rich Yanni who led the
team in assists with 123. The above
group will be bolstered by the
candidates from last year's 12-3 junior
varsity team and some outstanding
freshmen recruits.
When Bloomsburg opens its season
at home against Lock Haven on
November27, CoachCharlesChronister
will be aiming for his sixth successful
season since taking over the reigns of
the Huskies in 1971. Under Chronister's
guidance, the Maroon and Gold cagers
have an 88-38 win-loss record for a
.698 winning percentage. The Huskies
were 13-1 Oduring last year's campaign.
"We have a difficult schedule this
year as our traditional rivals will be
strong, and we have added newcomers
such as University of Scranton who
was the NCAA Division Ill national
champion, King's, Bucknell, and
Lynchburg," Chronister said. "We are
looking forward to this competition
with eagerness, and we should be very
competitive."

With al I players from last year's 11-2
team eligible to return, the BSC
women's basketball team will face its
most challenging sched1:1le in the
history of the sport with a degree of
confidence. Three new teams of
LaSalle University, Shippensburg, and
the University of Scranton have been
added to the highly competitive
schedule.
"Although we may not be able to
maintain a won-lost record that is as
impressive as ones in the past, we feel
that the increased intensity of the
competition we will face should
provide a highly interesting season of
basketball," Joanne McComb, the
Huskiettes' head coach, remarked.
Additional upgrading of the basketball program is evident with Susan
Hibbs being added to the coaching
staff.
"All of us connected with this year's
program view the upcoming season as
the ultimate in challenges," McComb
added.

Head Coach
J
Eli Mclaughlin
reached a milestone in his men's
swimming and diving coaching career
when the Huskies
defeated Shippensburg last January
to earn him his
100th career coaching victory.
He is starting his
16th season as the head coach of the
Huskies. Although BSC dropped to
5-8 last season, the Huskies had
recorded 10 consecutive winning
campaigns prior to the 1975-76
season. Bloomsburg has a 102-71-2
record under McLaughlin's leadership.
During his years as coach,
Mclaughlin has helped develop six
All-Americans. They were: Rich
Kozicki, Stu Marvin, Jim Balchunas,
Wayne Richards, Keith Torok, and
Dave Gibas. He has also coached
several Pennsylvania Conference
champions.
Mclaughlin received both his
Bachelor of Science and Master of
Education degrees from West Chester
State College and has taken additional
work towards his doctorate at West
Virginia University. He is an associate
professor in the Health and Physical
Education Department and is also the
Director of Aquatics at the college.
Mclaughlin served as varsity line
coach for three years (1961-63),
assistant baseball coach (1965), and
head basebal I coach (1967).
His background both as a swimming coach and as an official has been
quite extensive. Mclaughlin is married to the former Patricia Repash and
they have two daughters, Beth age 17,

"The 1976-77 Bloomsburg State
College men's swimming and diving
season will be very interesting," Eli
McLaughlin, who has coached the
Huskies for the last 15 campaigns,
remarked.
Early indications definitely project
that the Huskies should be relatively
strong and ready to challenge any
opponent on their schedule.
"We are looking forward to another
great year in individual performances
with hopes that enough team
members will put it all together to
enable the team to win," McLaughlin
added.
Experienced team members who
have participated in dual, state, and
national competition are seniors Doug
Thran and Stu Marvin, juniors Gary
Havens, Keith Torok, and Jim
Balchunas, and sophomores Wayne
Richards, Steve Price, Curt Moore,
Dan Steel, Dietrich Lichtner, Kevin
Myers, and Brian Cox. Richards is the
captain.
Torok, Richards, Balchunas, and
Marvin have also gained All-American
honors for past achievements.
"The past is history now. We are
interested in attaining new records,
goals, and gaining even greater
recognition for our program,"
McLaughlin and Richards commented.
Adding additional strength to the
returning varsity team will be
sophomore Kevin Johnson, and
freshmen Mike Bower, Guy Campbell,
Pete Dardaris, Eric Slingerland, Scott
Wiegand, and Mark Robinson.
This year's manager is Bruce
DeHaven.

Head Coach
Roger B. Sanders
starts his fifth season as the head
coach of the Huskies.
His 1975-76 record of 9-8-1 raised
his four-year record to 43-22-2. The
Huskies are trying
to achieve their
fourth consecutive
winning season under his leadership.
Last season his squad placed third
in the Pennsylvania Conference and at
the University of Delaware Invitational,
fourth at the Bucknell Invitational, and
fifth in the Eastern Wrestling League.
The future of wrestling at BSC looks
very good because the freshmen and
sophomore wrestlers won the Keystone Invitational tournament.
The Huskies were 16-3 during the
1973-74 season and defeated an
Athletes in Action team. The 16
official victories established a BSC
record for team wins in a season. The
team also captured the United States
Coast Guard Invitational, placed third
in the Pennsylvania Conference,
fourth in the Wilkes Open, and fifth in
14
the NCAA Division II Championships.
Bloomsburg joined the NCAA Division
I last season.
A native of Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, Sanders graduated from West
Chester State College where he won
three Middle Atlantic University
Division Championships and a NCAA
College Division Championship. During his four years of collegiate
wrestling, he never lost a dual meet.
He is a member of the West Chester
State College Hall of Fame.
He is married to the former Nancy E.

two daughters, Julie Lea, age nine,
and Traci Lyn, age three. The Sanders

Undefeated his junior and senior years
in dual matches, he continued this
string the first two years of collegiate
wrestling at Muskingum College
where he was a letter winner for four
years.
While he and his wife Judy, the
former Judith L. Spillard of South
Euclid, Ohio, were earning their
master's degrees, Walker spent one
year as assistant wrestling coach at
William Tennant High School, Warminster, Pennsylvania. His doctorate
in educational psychology was earned
at Temple University in 1973.
"Calvin takes care of the details that
could hamper ourprogram and keeps
things moving along smoothly,
commented Coach Sanders.
The Walkers reside in Danville,

1976-77 Outlook
With about half of his 40 candidates
being freshmen, Coach Roger Sanders
expects the Huskies to have a
comparatively young team for the
1976-77 campaign.
However, to brighten the picture,
five wrestlers who were red-shirted
during the 1975-76 season will be back
in uniform. Included in this group are
the following who have their last year
of eligibility noted : junior Tom Fink ,
118-126; and sophomores Carl Poff,
134, Mike Snyder and John Rogers,
177, and Mark Harkins at 150. Fink and
Poff are expected to help the team at
the weights where the Huskies
performed under .500 .
The lone senior on the squad is
Dave Mccollum who performed at 118.
Sanders will be counting heavily on
middleweight performers
Tony
Caravella and Andy Cappelli as well as
upperweighters Tino DiMarco and Mel
Sharp. Steve Scheib, the 177
Pennsylvania Conference· champion
and the Eastern Wrestling League
runnerup will red-shirt this year.
