Head Coach---Charles Chronister
"A Winning Tradition" at Bloomsburg has certainly been promoted
by head Coach Charles Chronister
during his 14 seasons as the Huskies'
mentor. Chronister has never had
a losing season and is the winningest
coach in Bloomsburg history with
250 victories. With a 250-127 wonlost record entering his 15th season,
Chronister will be shooting for his
sixth 20-win season. He has led four teams to the NCM Division
11 National Tournament, losing in the quarterfinals twice. In 1974,
the school's first-ever trip to the tournament, Chronister's squad
lost to eventual champion Morgan State in the quarterfinals.
In the 1982-83 tourney, the Huskies fell to eventual champion
Wright State, also in the quarterfinals. The other two BU trips
to the tournament resulted in first round losses. The 1980-81
team fell to Cal-Poly SLO in the first round and the 1981-82 squad
met the same fate, this time to PC rival Cheyney.
Chronister coached Bloomsburg to its first ever Pennsylvania
Conference Championship in the 1980-81 season. He has also
coached the Huskies to the PC Eastern Division crown three
times. The 1972-73 unit posted the school's first 20 win season.
During Bloomsburg's three straight NCM appearances between
1980-81 and 1982-83, the Huskies registered a 70-24 record,
including a school record 24 wins in the 1981-82 campaign.
In 1984-85, the Huskies were victimized by an 0-4 start in the
Eastern Division and finished the season with a 15-12 overall
mark and 7-7 in the East.
Chronister has coached three All-American's in his 14 seasons,
all playing within a 10-year span. John Willis was the first, playing
from 1971 to 1974. Jerry Radocha, the second, played from
1973 to 1977. Radocha is Bloomsburg's all-time leading scorer
while Willis ranks third. The most recent All-American under
Chronister's tutelage was Jon Bardsley, from 1978 to 1982.
Chronister, a graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a
bachelor's and master's degree in health and physical education
was an assistant coach at Gettysburg College for four years under
Bob Hulton. Prior to that, he coached at Hanover (PA) High
School, where his teams compiled a 59-8 record while winning
numerous county championships and participating in the PIM
District 111 playoffs.
IU Coaching Staff: Tony DaRe, Ray Ricketts, Owlet Chronister,
Teny Conrad, lurt Reese (Missing: "Doc" Herbert)
2
- - - Assistant Coaches - - Burt Reese
Burt Reese enters his eighteenth season as an assistant coach
for the Huskies. For seven of those years Reese coached the
freshman basketball units, compiling an 83-27 mark, but for the
past 10 campaigns, he has worked directly with the varsity program. his most important duty with the Huskies' over the past
several years has been coordinating the recruiting efforts of the
staff. In addition, Reese serves as the head coach of the school's
nationally ranked men's tennis team. He received his bachelors
and masters degrees from East Strousburg University.
Dr. Michael Herbert
"Doc" Herbert enters his twenty-first season with Bloomsburg's
basketball program. He has served in numerous capacities over
the past 20 years, including a three year stint in charge of the
freshman team. He also serves as coach to the BU women's
tennis squad and led his team to the Pennsylvania Conference
Championship this past fall. Herbert received his bachelors
degree at the University of Maryland and his masters and doctorate degrees at Lehigh University.
Ray Ricketts
Ray Ricketts joins the Huskies' staff for the first time this season.
He comes to BU from a highly successful program at Springfield
College where he was an assistant for five seasons. Prior to that
he was an assistant at the University of Massachusetts for four
years. Ricketts is a 1974 graduate of Albright College, where he
still ranks as the school's seventh all-time leading scorer with
15 58 career points. Ricketts was a four year starter and served
as captain for two seasons. He earned his masters degree at
Springfield.
Terry Conrad
Terry Conrad is in his third season as an assistant coach for the
Huskies after performing under Chronister for four seasons at
BU. He was a point guard on the 1983 squad that became the
second team in the school's history to advance to the national
quarterfinals. While playing for the Huskies, he helped the teams
post a four year mark of 84-37 and make three appearances in
the Pennsylvania Conference championship game. He currently
ranks 10th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1081 points.
He holds a bachelors degree in secondary education .
Tony Da Re
Tony Da Re, a former Bloomsburg player {1970-74), will begin
his second year of collegiate coaching as an assistant coach for
the Huskies. Da Re was a member of the 1973-74 Bloomsburg
team which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCM tournament, and ranks among the all-time leaders in single-season
free-throw percentage at BU. Before coming to Bloomsburg,
he was an assistant for nine years at Central Columbia High
School where the team won the PIM Class M state championship in 1981.
3
- - - The Season Ahead - - Following a disappointing 15-12 season in 1984-85, Bloomsburg
University head coach Charles Chronister hopes to guide the
Huskies back to post-season play where they had appeared the
previous four seasons.
Bloomsburg had appeared in the Pennsylvania Conference
Championship Game the four seasons prior to last year while
advancing to the NCAA Tournament three straight years from
1980-81 to 1982-83.
The Huskies were victimized by an 0-4 start in PC Eastern
Division play but rebounded to even their mark at 4-4 and keep
playoff hopes alive. However, rounding out the division schedule
by going 3-3 eliminated BU from a possible fifth consecutive
playoff appearance.
The 1985-86 squad returns some experienced players while
adding talented newcomers in hopes of returning to post-season
action.
Senior captain Glenn Noack leads a group of seven returning
lettermen, four of which are starters, who return in 1985-86.
Chronister expects to start the season with an all-senior lineup,
putting a lot of game experience on the floor. Three of those five,
Noack, Shane Planutis and Pat Flanagan, were important factors
in the Huskies advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals three seasons ago.
Noack was the team's high scorer last season with a 15.2 point
per game average. He was named to the PC East First Team as
well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference's (ECAC) Division
II South All-Star Team. He shot 88.3% (98-111) from the free
throw line to break the existing school record only to be outdone
by teammate Greg Thomas' 89.1% (49-55). Noack ranked second
on the team in rebounding at 5.7 per game and chipped in 77
assists, also second on the team.
Planutis and Flanagan, both 6'6" forwards, averaged 6.6 and
2.8 points per game in reserve rolls last season and played in
25 games. Flanagan can also swing to the center spot and is probably the Huskies' most aggressive inside player. He has averaged 3.0 rebounds per game in his three years, mostly in the
sixth-man role.
Another key returnee is senior guard Les Alston. His 9.2 points
per game and 83 assists on the season were enough to rank him
third and first, respectively, in each category. Alston proved to
be a nice addition to the BU program last season after transferring from Delaware County Community College. He shot 50%
from the field to rank third on the team. As a unit, the 1984-85
squad shot just 45.7% from the field while leading the conference with a 77.0% mark from the charity stripe.
Dean Colone became eligible last January after transferring
from Geneva College. In 21 games, his quickness and leaping
ability added some excitement to the BU attack as well as 6.9
points per game and an 82.1 free throw shooting percentage.
He also shot over 50% from the floor and hauled in 4.1 rebounds,
playing both the guard and forward positions.
Thomas, with his record-setting free throw mark, also returns
an 8.6 point per game scoring average. He played in all 2 7 games
last season as a freshman.
Another returnee at guard is Jerome Brisbon. The junior scored
5.8 points per game and was third on the team in assists. Brisbon,
Thomas and Alston will be the key people in insuring that the
BU offense is run properly. They teamed up for over half of the
4
team's assists last year and according to Chronister, getting the
proper people the ball at the correct time, while minimizing
turnovers, will decide just how well the Huskies perform.
Three newcomers, who are expected to make contributions
to the team, are Bill Connelly, Steve Melchior and Mike Simpkins.
Connelly, out of Holy Spirit High School in Abescon, NJ, is a 6'4"
forward, who averaged 23.6 points and 7.0 rebounds and was an
all-conference selection his senior year.
Melchior could make an immediate impact on the front line
in his first season with the team. He averaged just under 20
points a game while pulling down 12 boards as a senior. He
could see some action as a backup center.
Rounding out the newcomers is Mike Simpkins, a 6'4" high
school forward, who will be transferred to a guard in college.
He handed out four assists per game in his senior season as a
forward, while adding 22 points and 10 rebounds a game.
Rounding out the BU squad are forwards Dave Koslosky, a
junior and sophomore Steve Ross, both of whom saw limited
duty last season. Both could see more action this season.

Basketball's Birth
- - - - at Bloomsburg - - - The game of basketball was invented by James Naismith in
December of 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Just over two
years later, the game of basketball was played for the first time
at Bloomsburg in what was then the "new" gymnasium. This
gymnasium was located directly behind Carver Hall, near the
site of the present-day Kehr Union Building. The exerpt that
follows was taken out of The Columbian, a Bloomsburg newspaper, from Friday March 2, 1894. It describes, to the best of
the University's knowledge, the first organized basketball game
ever played on the campus:
"The new gymnasium at the Normal School was
opened with appropriate ceremonies last week
Thursday. After the close of the exercises incident
to the presentation of the large flag by the P.O.S. of
A., the audience went from the auditorium to the
gymnasium, and filled every available space. The
running track was crowded, and the sides of the
first floor was thickly lined with spectators ... The
most exciting part of the program was the game of
basketball between members of the Philogian and
Calliepian Societies. A bushel basket was hung at
either end of the hall about ten feet from the floor.
Every time that either side gets the ball in the basket
at the opposite end of the hall it counts three. The
game is nearly as exciting as football, though not
quite as rough and dangerous. The Phi/as were the
first to land the ball in the Callies' basket and a great
shout went up from the spectators. But the Callies
put the ball in the Philo basket twice, and this with
fouls made the score 9 to 5 at the end of the third
inning, in favor of the former and then the Callies
and their friends went wild and everybody shouted."
This exhibition was just the beginning of a tradition of success
in the sport of basketball at Bloomsburg which has lasted right
from the first game ever played on campus to the present-day
Huskies of 1985-86.
The picture below shows the 1894-95 Bloomsburg Normal
School basketball team. This was the school's first varsity basketball team.

Bloomsburg Basketball
"A Winning Tradition"
Since the inception of competitive basketball at Bloomsburg
near the turn of the century, the men's basketball team has been
a dominant force compiling a record of 850-530 for a winning
percentage of .616. From the very first coach, A.K. Aldinger, to
the present coach, Charles Chronister, Bloomsburg basketball
teams have performed at a level of excellence which is reflective
of champions.
Competitive basketball at Bloomsburg began in the late 1890's
under the direction of coach Aldinger. However, because a fire
destroyed all records of the games played in those initial years,
the first year for which records are available is 1901, when Bloomsburg was 4-3 under Aldinger. Since that time Aldinger and 17
other coaches have helped build the "winning tradition" in
basketball at Bloomsburg.
From 1901 to 1932, ten different men took their turn at the
helm of the Huskies with five of those men coaching for only
one year. During the 1919-20 and 1920-21 seasons, T.W. Pownall
(13-6, .684) and R.H. Diedrich (12-2, .857) turned in the best
single-season marks. However, in terms of those coaches who
coached for longer than one year, George M. Mead from 1921-2 5
(42-17, .712) and Thornley W. Booth from 1926-32 (59-25, .702)
were the most successful coaches in the early years of Bloomsburg basketball.
Following Booth's first year in 1926-27, the school changed
its name from the Bloomsburg Normal School to the Bloomsburg
State Teacher's College. It would be known by this name until
1960 when the school became Bloomsburg State College.
In 1932, upon the departure of Booth, George Buckheit took
over the reigns of the Huskies and guided them to a 95-71 mark
(.5 72) over 12 years. He coached from 1932-43, before taking
a year off in 1943-44 during which Jack Llewellyn guided the
Huskies to an 11-4 mark. Buckheit then returned to coach Bloomsburg during the period of 1944-46. Pete Wisher took over for
Buckheit in 1946, and during his three-year stint at Bloomsburg,
he guided the Huskies to a 25-27 record (.480).
The year of 1949 marked the first year bloomsburg competed
in the Pennsylvania Conference and also marked the arrival of
new head coach Harold Shelly who coached from 194960.
Shelly guided Bloomsburg to an 11-year mark of 112-74 and a
PC record of 81-54 including a conference championship in
1952-53. Bill Foster then led the Huskies to three consecutive
second place conference finishes from 1960-63, and a 45-11
overall mark. Foster's .807 winning percentage leads all Bloomsburg coaches who have coached for more than one year. Foster
is currently the head coach at the University of South Carolina.
From 1966-71 Earl Voss guided the Huskies to a 63-42 record
(.600), before handing the reigns over to present-day coach
Charles Chronister. Chronister, who has coached for the past 14
seasons at BU, has accumulated an overall record of 250-127
(.663) and is the most accomplished coach in Bloomsburg's long
basketball history. He has guided the Huskies to four NCAA
Division 11 tournament appearances, won 20 or more games five
times, and has coached the top four scorers in Bloomsburg
history. In addition, he has coached three All-Americans at BUJohn Willis (1972-74), Jerry Radocha (1973-77), and most recently, Jon Bardsley (1978-82).

Division 11 tournament appearances, won 20 or more games five
times, and has coached the top four scorers in Bloomsburg
history. In addition, he has coached three All-Americans at BUJohn Willis (1972-74), Jerry Radocha (1973-77), and most recently, Jon Bardsley (1978-82).

upper campus, serves as home for most of BU's athletic events.
The facility has all the necessary ingredients as it holds a 3000

two handball/racquetball courts. The building has classroom and
-oftic<> space for use by the health/physical education and athletic
staff~ Nelson also houses the wrestling practice room, which
is a fi,ily padded area located on the second floor. A totally
equipp'ed Nautilus weight room adds to the strength and conditioning areas of the program, and Nelson also offers a training
room staffed by a full-time physical therapist and no less than
six student assistants. Also an equipment manager handles the
needs of most of Bloomsburg's 18 varsity athletic teams.
