- BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY " A Commihnent To Excellence"
Bloomsburg University is a multi-purpose institution of highereducation serving the citizens of Pennsylvania as one of the 14
Commonwealth-owned Universities. With a commitment to provide a
quality, affordable education for all qualified students, Bloomsburg
combines the tradition of an institution founded in 1839 with modem
learning, living, and recreational programs and facilities. Commonwealth funding provides 55 percent of Bloomsburg's annual operating
budget.
Undergraduate students may enroll in degree programs in 64
areas of study in the arts and sciences, business, teacher education,
nursing, and health sciences. A program in engineering is offered in
conjunction with the Pennsylvania State University, and preparation
for post-baccalaureate study at professional schools is offered.
Unique educational opportunities are available through advanced
placement, study abroad, professional practicum, internships, independent study and the Center for Academic Development
programs.
At the graduate level, the master's degree is offered in 25 areas of
study and there are ten supervisory certification programs in the field
of teacher education.
Extended program offerings provide continuing, life-long learning
opportunities for people of all ages and educational interests through
non-degree courses, non-credit mini-courses, international studies
and exchanges, cooperative education, courses offered at offcampus locations and by public service television, and credit for
work experience.
Enrollment for the Fall semester, 1984, totalled 6,189 students.
There were 5,045 full-time and 719 part-time undergraduates, and 93
full-time and 332 part-time graduate students. Instruction is provided
by a 342-member faculty.
The University's 173-acre campus overlooks the Town of Bloomsburg and the scenic Susquehanna Valley. Carver Hall, built in 1867,
provides a contrast with the modem facilities that include seven
residence halls, a library, a 2,000-seat auditorium, student union,
dining hall, gymnasium, administration building, five classroom
buildings, athletic fields, and recreational areas on the lower
campus.
An athletic complex and recreational area occupy the school's
100-acre upper campus. In addition, the James H. McCormick
Center for Human Services is the newest building on the lower
campus and is being used for the first time this fall.
Located less than two miles from an Interstate 80 interchange and
22 miles from Interstate 81, Bloomsburg is within one hour's driving
time lrom Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hazleton, and Williamsport, I½
hour's from Harrisburg, 2½ hours from Philadelphia, and 3 hours from
New York City. The community is 45 miles from the Avoca International Airport and is serviced by major bus lines.
Bloomsburg has an enviable placement record. Of the 1,183 who
graduated in the 1982-83 academic year, 81 % had meaningful
employment or were in graduate school one year later.
Active files of over 25,000 living alumni are kept by the University.
Graduates of BU have distinguished themselves in areas including
law, medicine (one is a Nobel Laureate), science, architecture,
education, industry, and research.
The Bloomsburg University is fully accredited by the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Council for the
Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Pennsylvania State
Board of Education.

Head Coach - - Charles Chronister
Entering his fourteenth season as head coach at Bloomsburg
University, Charles Chronister has continued Bloomsburg' s fine
basketball tradition by leading the Huskies to winning seasons in all
of his thirteen previous years at BU. His teams have compiled a 235115 won-lost record, besides winning numerous in-season tournaments
and establishing 42 Bloomsburg University team and individual
marks. He has also coached the Huskies to numerous berths in postseason events including their first ever Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference title and four visits to the NCAA Division II national
tournament.
In 1974 the Huskies captured a NCAA Regional tournament and
advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual national
champion Morgan State, while the 1980-81 squad dropped a firstround game in the NCAA tourney to Cal• Poly. In 1981-82 the Huskies,
once again, lost a first-round game in the Division II tournament, this
time to PC rival Cheyney. However, the following year the Huskies
defeated the Wolves and Philadelphia Textile to win the NCAA East
Regional before losing to eventual national champion Wright State in
the quarterfinals. Although last year's team was absent from the
national tournament for the first time since the 1979-80 season,
Chronister coached the Huskies to victory in 12 of their last 13 games,
losing to Mansfield in the PC championship game.
A graduate of East Stroudsburg University with his bachelors and
masters degrees in health and physical education, Chronister was an
assistant coach for four years under Bob Hulton at Gettysburg
College. Prior to that, he coached for three seasons at Hanover (PA)
High School where his teams were a combined 59-9 while winning
numerous county championships and participating in the PIAA
District III playoffs.

Coach Chronister In Action

- - - -Assistants - - - Burt Reese
Burt Reese enters his seventeenth season as an assistant coach for
the Huskies. For seven of those seasons, Reese coached the freshman
basketball teams compihng an 83-27 mark, but for the past eight
seasons he has worked directly with Chronister and the varsity
program. His most important duty is coordinating BU's recruiting
efforts. In addition, Reese serves as the head coach of the highly
successful men's and women's tennis teams. He received his
bachelors and masters degrees from East Stroudsburg University.

Dr. Michael Herbert
Entering his twentieth season is Dr. Michael Herbert. "Doc" has
served in numerous capacities with the team over the past nineteen
seasons including a three-year stint as coach of the freshman team.
He is also the assistant tennis coach in charge of the women's squad.
Herbert received his bachelor of science degree at the University of
Maryland and his masters and doctorate degrees at Lehigh University.

Terry Conrad
Terry Comad begins his second year as an assistant coach for the
Huskies. Comad is a former BU point guard who was a four-year
letter winner ('79-'83) at Bloomsburg and he is ranked as the school's
ninth all-time leading scorer (1081 pis.). He received his bachelor of
science degree in Secondary Education from BU.

Tony Da Re
Tony Da Re, a former Bloomsburg player (1970-74), will begin his
first year of collegiate coaching as an assistant coach for the Huskies.
Da Re was a member of the 1973-74 Bloomsburg team which
advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, and ranks
among the all-time leaders in single-season free-throw percentage at
BU. Before coming to Bloomsburg, he was an assistant for nine years
at Central Columbia High School where the team won the PIAA
Class AA state championship in 1981.

- - The Season Ahead - After winning 12 of their last 13 games during the 1983-84
campaign, the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team will
look to continue their winning ways this season. The Huskies posted a
fine 19-11 record last season, including an 11-3 mark in the
Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division in which they finished
first, and will return four starters to this year's team in anticipation of
yet another winning season.
Following a 5-9 start last season, the Huskies finished the season in
impressive fashion. The team was riding a ten-game winning steak as
they began play in the Pennsylvania Conference Championship
tournament, however, following victories over West Chester (77-57)
and Slippery Rock (86-80), Bloomsburg's season was ended in the PC
championship game as Mansfield dealt BU a 61-54 loss. The failure
of Bloomsburg to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II
national tournament marked the first time the Huskies had not been
involved in the tournament since the 1979-80 season.
This season senior center Wes Wright and junior forwards Shane
Planutis and Glenn Noack head a list of returnees that will look to
keep the winning tradition alive and well at BU. Wright, the only
senior on the team, will serve as this year's captain. He was one of
only two players to play in all 30 of the Huskies' games a year ago and
led the team in rebounds (173 and 5.8 per game) and field goal
percentage (53.2%). He scored 7.7 points per game. Wright was
particularly impressive during the Huskies' winning steak and was an
All-Tournament selection at the Pennsylvania Conference Championships.
Planutis was the other Husky to play in all 30 games last year, and
is the top returning scorerfor this year's team as he averaged 12.1 ppg
last season. A year ago Shane led the team in free-throw percentage
hitting on 39 of 45 free throws for 86.7%. That mark tied him for the
third best single-season free-throw percentage in Bloomsburg basketball history. He also was second in field goal percentage (51.6%) and
pulled down 142 rebounds-good for fourth on the team.
Following a freshman year in which he was named the ECAC "CoRookie of the Year", Noack's sophomore season was interrupted by
an ankle injury, and he served the remainder of the season as the
Huskies' sixth man. His statistics continued to be impressive though,
and included an 11.9 ppg scoring average, 76 assists, and field goal
and free-throw percentages of 50.4% and 84.8% respectively. Noack
also set a Bloomsburg record by making 33 consecutive free throws
during the course of the season. Noack is expected to return to a
starting role for the Huskies and will be looked to for strong play, both
offensively and defensively.
Sophomore guard Jerome Brisbon leads the list of other key
returnees for BU. After numerous difficulties in the beginning of the
season at the point guard position Brisbon stepped in and provided
Bloomsburg with the spark that it needed. He was third on the team in
assists (60), and fourth in scoring (9.6 ppg). Also returning for the
Huskies are junior forward Pat flanagan (5.5 ppg), and sophomores
Greg Johnston, at guard, Dave Koslosky, at forward, and Bob
McCullough, who will back up Wes Wright at center.
For the second year in a row, the Huskies will be undergoing a
change in the backcourt. Because of the departure of Barry Francisco,
one of the most exciting players to ever perform at Bloomsburg, the
coaching staff has had to find someone to take over the very
important shooting guard position that Francisco occupied for four
years. Although this is by no means an easy task due to Francisco's
16.7 ppg scoring average, 101 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game of
a year ago, coach Chronister believes his team will be able to handle
the adjustment very well. He stated, "Any good program can replace
an individual with exceptional talent that has graduated and
continue the team's success. The style of the team may change,
however the bottom line is that the results stay the same-in our case
that means winning!"

4

In response to the need for a shooting guard, Chronister expects to
move Brisbon into this offensively-oriented position and insert junior
Les Alston into the point guard spot. Alston is a transfer from
Delaware County Community College who is a true point guard with
a solid jump shot and excellent defensive skills. Brisbon improved
his play markedly over the summer while participating in the College
Division of the Sonny Hill basketball league in Philadelphia, and will
be expected to provide additional offensive punch for Bloomsburg
this season.
In addition to Alston, the coaching staff's recruiting efforts have
netted the Huskies a number of lop performers. Freshman Greg
Thomas gives BU additional depth at the shooting guard position.
Thomas played for the very successful Carlisle H.S. "Thundering
Herd" and continues the tradition of big guards at Bloomsburg.
Another freshman that has burst onto the scene and made his
prescence felt immediately is Steve Ross . His strength and aggressiveness provides the Huskies with some much needed bulk under
the boards. Says Chronister, "A big improvement in the strength and
agility of Bobby McCullough and the addition of Steve Ross gives us
the strongest and deepest front line that we've had in a very long lime
at Bloomsburg."
Freshman Crory Henderson, from Mastbaum High School in
Philadelphia, and junior Dean Colone, who transfered from Geneva
College and will be eligible in January, provide even further depth al
both the guard and forward positions.
Chronister concluded, "A number of problems that we experienced
early last season at the point guard position which contributed to our
slow start have been taken care of by the addition of Alston and
Thomas and the play of Jerome Brisbon. Hopefully, our recruiting
efforts and the continued strong play of our veterans will lead us to the
fast start that I anticipate this year."

Basketball's Birth
at Bloomsburg
The game of basketball was invented by James Naismith in
December of 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Just over two years
later, the game of basketball was played for the first time at
Bloomsburg in what was then the "new" gymnasium. This gymnasium
was located directly behind Carver Hall, near the site of the presentday Kehr Union Building. The exerpt that follows was taken out of The
Columbian, a Bloomsburg newspaper, from Friday March 2, 1894. It
describes, to the best of the University's knowledge, the first
organized basketball game ever played on the campus:
"The new gymnasium at the Normal School was opened
with appropriate ceremonies last week Thursday. After the
close of the exercises incident to the presentation of the
large flag by the P.O.S. of A., the audience went from the
auditorium to the gymnasium, and filled every available
space. The running track was crowded, and the sides of the
first floor was thickly lined with spectators ... The most
exciting part of the program was the game of basket ball
between members of the Philogian and Calliepian Societies.
A bushel basket was hung at either end of the hall about
ten feet from the floor. Every time that either side gets the
ball in the basket at the opposite end of the hall it counts
three. The game is nearly as exciting as foot ball, though
not quite as rough and dangerous. The Philos were the first
to land the ball in the Callies' basket and a great shout went
up from the spectators. But the Callies put the ball in the
Philo basket twice, and this with fouls made the score 9 to 5
at the end of the third inning, in favor of the former, and
then the Callies and their friends went wild and everybody
shouted."

This exhibition was just the beginning of a tradition of success in
the sport of basketball at Bloomsburg which has lasted right from the
first game ever played on campus to the present-day Huskies of 198485.
The picture below shows the 1894-95 Bloomsburg Normal School
basketball team. This was the school's first varsity basketball team.

Bloomsburg Basketball "A Winning Tradition"

Since the inception of competitive basketball at Bloomsburg near
the turn of the century, the men's basketball team has been a
dominant force compiling a record of 835-518 for a winning percentage
of .617. From the very first coach, A.K. Aldinger, to the present coach,
Charles Chronister, Bloomsburg basketball teams have performed at
a level of excellence which is reflective of champions.
Competitive basketball at Bloomsburg began in the late 1890's
under the direction of coach Aldinger. However, because a fire
destroyed all records of the games played in those initial years, the
first year for which records are available is 1901 when Bloomsburg
was 4-3 under Aldinger. Since that time Aldinger and 17 other
coaches have helped build the "winning tradition" in basketball at
Bloomsburg.
From 1901 to 1932, ten different men took their turn at the helm of
the Huskies with five of those men coaching for only one year. During
the 1919-20 and 1920-21 seasons, T.W. Pownall (13-6, .684) and R.H.
Diedrich (12-2, .857) turned in the best single-season marks. However, in terms of those coaches who coached for longer than one year,
George M. Mead from 1921-25 (42-17, .712) and Thornley W. Booth
from 1926-32 (59-25, .702) were the most successful coaches in the
early years of Bloomsburg basketball.
Following Booth's first year in 1926-27, the school changed it's
name from the Bloomsburg Normal School to the Bloomsburg State
Teacher's College. It would be known by this name until 1960 when
the school became Bloomsburg State College.
In 1932, upon the departure of Booth, George Buckheit took over
the reigns of the Huskies and guided them to a 95-71 mark (.572) over
12 years. He coached from 1932-43, before taking a year off in 194344 during which Jack Llewellyn guided the Huskies to an 11-4 mark.
Buckheit then returned to coach Bloomsburg during the period of
1944-46. Pete Wisher took over for Buckheit in 1946, and during his
three-11ear stint at Bloomsburg, he guided the Huskies to a 25-27
record (.480).
The year of 1949 marked the first year Bloomsburg competed in the
Pennsylvania Conference and also marked the arrival of new head
coach Harold Shelly who coached from 1949-60. Shelly guided
Bloomsburg to an 11-year mark of 112-74 and a PC record of 81-54
including a conference championship in 1952-53. Bill Foster then
lead the Huskies to three consecutive second place conference
finishes from 1960-63, and a 45-11 overall mark. Foster's .807 winning
percentage leads all Bloomsburg coaches who have coached for
more than one year. Foster is currently the head coach at the
University of South Carolina.
From 1966-71 Earl Voss guided the Huskies to a 63-42 record (.600),
before handing the reigns over to present-day coach Charles
Chronister. Chronister, who has coached for the past 13 seasons at
BU, has accumulated an overall record of 235-115 (.671) and is the
most accomplished coach in Bloomsburg's long basketball history.
He has guided the Huskies to four NCAA Division II tournament
appearances, won 20 or more games five times, and has coached the
top four scorers in Bloomsburg history. In addition, he has coached
three All-Americans at BU-John Willis (1972-74), Jerry Radocha
(1973-77), and most recently, Jon Bardsley (1978-82).

- -Nelson Fieldhouse - "Home Of The Huskies"

The Nelson Fieldhouse, located on Bloomsburg University's upper
campus, serves as home for most of BU's athletic events. The facility
has all the necessary ingredients as it holds a 3000 seat arena for all
home wrestling and basketball games, an indoor track, two tennis
courts, an olympic size swimming pool, and two handball/racquetball courts. The building has classroom and office space for use by
the health/physical education and athletic staffs. Nelson also houses
the wrestling practice room, which is a fully padded area located on
the second floor. A totally equipped Nautilus weight room adds to the
strength and conditioning areas of the program, and Nelson also
offers a training room staffed by a full-time physical therapist and no
less than six student assistants. Also an equipment manager handles
the needs of most of Bloomsburg's 18 varsity athletic teams.

Head Trainer
Art Hopkins
Art is in his second year as the Head
Trainer at Bloomsburg. He is a licensed
Physical Therapist (LPT) and received
his certificate from Hahneman Hospital
in Philadelphia and his undergraduate
degree at East Stroudsburg.

Equipment
Manager
Ron Morgan
Mr. Ron Morgan has served as
Bloomsburg's equipment manager for
the past eleven years. Ron is located in
the Nelson Fieldhouse and handles
most of the equipment needs of BU's 18
varsity programs.
