SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2012
EDINBORO UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
McComb Fieldhouse, 10:00 a.m.
Dr. Julie E. Wollman
Dr. Julie E. Wollman became Edinboro University’s 17th President
on June 1, 2012. Since arriving at Edinboro, President Wollman
has led an unrelenting focus on the highest levels of excellence
for the University. Initiatives in her first months as President
have included the expansion of programs to support student success
and the launch of a listening and strategic planning process that
has engaged all constituencies of the campus community.
The first woman to lead the university, President Wollman came
to Edinboro from Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts,
where she served as Vice President for Academic Affairs for
four years. At Wheelock, she was responsible for overseeing
the college’s academic programs. She was also involved both
in fundraising, helping to boost the college’s grant funding from $300,000 to more than
$4.3 million, and in the establishment of multiple community partnerships to help expand
program options and recruit new students.
Dr. Wollman earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and American literature and language
with a minor in French from Harvard University in 1981. She holds a Master of Science degree in
elementary education from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral degree in elementary
education from New York University. She also attended the Institute for Education Management
at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
She began her academic career as a social studies teacher and curriculum coordinator at
Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Additionally, she was a teacher at
Ethical Culture School in New York City for three years, during which time she also served as
a research assistant at New York University. She later worked as a professional development
facilitator at the New York Coalition Center for Education Leadership and, in 1989, was hired as
an instructor at both New York University and Pace University. She was hired as a faculty member
in elementary education at Rhode Island College in 1992 and spent nearly 15 years at the college,
including three years as Dean of the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development.
Dr. Wollman was named vice president for academic affairs at Worcester State College in Worcester,
Massachusetts, in 2007, where she was responsible for overseeing academic programming.
She also led the college’s strategic planning efforts, established an online scholarly journal and
redesigned the college’s program review process.
Over the years. President Wollman has written numerous articles that have been published in
academic journals, and has written two books on teaching writing and literature. She is a member
of The American Association of State Colleges and Universities and serves on AASCU’s Committee
on Policies and Procedures, and is an institutional representative to the Association of American
Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, and the Council on Undergraduate
Research, among other professional associations. She has worked with numerous community
organizations, and is a member of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership Board of
Directors and the UPMC Hamot Board of Corporators.

MACE BEARER
COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
Dr. Kathleen Benson
John E. Brown
Leading the academic procession and representing her
faculty colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at
today’s undergraduate Commencement is Dr. Kathleen
Benson, chairperson of Edinboro University’s Department of
Elementary, Middle and Secondary Education.
John E. Brown is a writer, ordained minister, pastoral
counselor and musician, but he considers his salient life’s
work the founding in 1989 of the Medicare-certified Hospice
of Crawford County, Pennsylvania. The organization was the
only such hospice in the region at the time, and he served as its
first CEO, Pastoral Counselor and Music Therapist. After his
first retirement in 1998, he continued as President of the Board
of Directors and has held subsequent positions to this day.
He also served on the Board of Directors of Pennsylvania
Hospice Network.
As a department chairperson and Professor of Education,
Dr. Benson’s distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the
central role that faculty play in the academic and personal
development of Edinboro University students.
An Edinboro alumna. Dr. Benson earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1972
and Master of Education with a Reading Specialist Certificate in 1975, both from Edinboro State
College, and her Elementary Principal Certificate in 1983, the year the college achieved University
status. She earned her Ph.D. in Elementary Education at the University of Akron in 1998.
She was a classroom teacher in the Millcreek Township School District, a community liaison
representative for the Career Assessment Center, Inc., in Erie, Pennsylvania, and a career
development coordinator and reading specialist for the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit
#5 prior to returning to her alma mater to teach in 1990. She was named Edinboro University’s
Educator of the Year in 2010.
Dr. Benson has helped prepare hundreds of teachers during her years at Edinboro and has been
the University’s Director of Student Teaching since 2008. “I still love teaching and believe that my
enthusiasm for the profession and in particular for what I teach is contagious,” she said. “I have
even stood on my head for my students if they promise to be good teachers and integrate reading
strategies into their regular teaching and learning in their middle and secondary classrooms.”
In addition to her work in the classroom and in the field as an advisor. Dr. Benson has served on
numerous committees in her department and the School of Education; chaired regional middlelevel education conferences; and made many presentations at state, national and international
conferences. Her community involvements have included election to two terms on the Millcreek
Township School Board and an active role as an appointed member of the Erie Vital Signs project.
“In my future, I hope to continue my lifelong advocacy for middle level education as well as being
a strong voice for equal educational opportunities for all students, including those least served by
our current education system,” she said.
Currently, Rev. Brown’s job title is Pastoral Counselor at Meadville Medical Center, but he
often is referred to as “Pastoral Troubadour.” He is on the staff of the hospital’s Pastoral Care
Department, where in the past 10 years he has developed a unique ministry combining music
and inspiration for patients in their rooms. He is an accomplished folk, blues and popular song
musician, and over the years has taught guitar and banjo to dozens of children and young people.
Rev. Brown earned two undergraduate degrees and a Master of Divinity from Eastern Theological
Seminary of Philadelphia (now Palmer Seminary) and has done doctoral work at the University
of Pennsylvania. He is an ordained American Baptist minister and has served as Director of
Youth Publications for The American Baptist Board of Education and Publication in Valley
Forge, Pennsylvania, and later as Managing Editor for Macrae-Smith Company of Philadelphia, a
publisher of educational and children’s books.
In Rev. Brown’s extensive writing career, more than 150 of his articles have been published in a
variety of publications, including four in The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care.
He is listed in Contemporary Authors, Volume 45; most of the seven titles attributed to him are
in the field of religious education. He also is a published poet and essayist, writing for several
small daily newspapers on a wide range of topics, and serves as a speaker and seminar leader in
addition to occasionally stepping in as a supply minister for a range of denominations.
Rev. Brown and his wife, Martha, reside in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and have traveled widely.
He considers his most riveting journey a trip to Russia in 1996 at the invitation of the fledgling
hospice movement there. At a time when there were only 20 hospices in all of Russia, he traveled
with a group of American hospice professionals to share their expertise with their Russian
counterparts.
Dr. Benson’s career as an educator, department chair, student teaching director and enthusiastic
mentor has served her students, colleagues and the entire University community with distinction.
She exemplifies the dedication and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to
our students’ success.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and
executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of
the Art Department. It was first used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College President
Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.
The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular
cabochon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with
silver relief fleur-de-lis design elements. The cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom
of the collar symbolizing the thirteen state colleges of Pennsylvania. The shaft of the mace is
composed of Brazilian rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings. The mace is terminated
by a cast sterling silver finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing curricula. The rib-like
cone form is terminated by a small silver sphere symbolizing the world.
The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
MASTER’S DEGREE CEREMONY
Louis C. Cole Auditorium, 2:00 p.m.
The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May 1981
Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling silver
medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a Gordon
Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles.
In the background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge.
On the reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an interlacing
knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in interlocking letters
on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross of St. George, representing
the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated and cast in the cire perdue
(lost wax) process.

Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold crafted circle which reads “Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.”
Professor Katzwinkel, now retired, added this piece to the medallion especially for the Inauguration of
President Frank G. Pogue in 1997, and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion representing the
school’s status as a University.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a ceremonial
inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was the outward
sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s academic
processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.
The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars of
velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate
and master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard
is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is
conferred by the president.
The audience is asked to stand during the Processional and to join in the singing of the
National Anthem.
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

MACE BEARER
Dr. Joel Erion
Leading the academic procession and representing his faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Master’s
Commencement is Dr. Joel Erion of Edinboro University’s
Department of Professional Studies.
As a Professor of School Psychology and Coordinator of the
School Psychology Program, Dr. Erion’s distinction as Mace
Bearer for the Master’s Commencement is symbolic of the
central role that faculty play in the academic and personal
development of Edinboro students.
Dr. Erion earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Clarion University in 1975
and completed his Master of Education Degree in Educational Psychology at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania in 1980. He earned his doctorate in School Psychology with an emphasis on
neuropsychology at lUP in 1994.
Prior to coming to Edinboro University in 1996, he worked as a school psychologist in the public
schools for 16 years. In 1993 he was chosen as School Psychologist of the Year by the Association
of School Psychologists of Pennsylvania. In 1994 he served as president of this same organization.
He is a nationally certified school psychologist and a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Erion’s research interests include parent tutoring, response to instruction and intervention,
and single-case design research. He has presented and published on numerous occasions,
frequently with student co-authors. He serves as faculty advisor to the graduate honor society.
Alpha Epsilon Lambda, and the School Psychology Club. He serves as a program reviewer for the
National Association of School Psychologists.
Working with Edinboro University management and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher
Education (PASSHE), he was instrumental in PASSHE’s recognition of the Educational Specialist
degree. In 2011 Edinboro University’s School Psychology program became the first in the State
System to award the Educational Specialist degree.
He has four awesome adult children and two beautiful granddaughters.
Dr. Erion’s extensive experience as an educator, advisor, researcher and program coordinator
defines a professional career that serves his students, colleagues and the entire University
community with distinction. He exemplifies the dedication and commitment of our faculty to
educational excellence and to our students’ success.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
EDINBORO UNIVERSITY ALMA MATER
The Campus Bookstore, located on the lower level of the Frank G. Pogue Student Center, will
be open today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Commencement ceremony will be filmed and streamed via the internet. Commencement
DVDs can be purchased from Edinboro University Television following the ceremony or online at
www.eupdvd.com.
Professional photographers have been employed to photograph each graduate receiving a
diploma. To avoid congestion and to maintain decorum in the ceremony, we ask that family
members refrain from approaching the platform to take pictures.
Presentation of diplomas takes time and yet has special significance for each individual and
family. Members of the audience are asked to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony
so that they do not disrupt the program or interfere with these special moments of others.
Commencement is our most important occasion, and we ask you to respect its significance to the
University community and to those who are being honored.
Thank you for your cooperation. We hope that you will enjoy the ceremony and celebrate the
achievements of our students.
