Spring 2024 Conversations for the Common Good Events
In the spring term we are continuing the “immigration” theme from the fall, in a partnership with the Bloomsburg
Theatre Ensemble (BTE). BTE and CCG are partners in the BTE production of Sanctuary City, running through Feb.
4. The play explores the realities faced by young immigrants hoping for passage of the DREAM act to permit them
to remain in the U.S. and pursue citizenship. LGBTQA rights, domestic violence, and the intense challenges of
maintaining friendships—or simply living—underground in a “sanctuary city” are at the heart of this moving
story.
The cast and director of Sanctuary city will be available to Commonwealth students on Friday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m.
for an interactive discussion on Zoom (https://commonwealthu-edu.zoom.us/j/96575631464 Meeting ID: 965
7563 1464). The discussion will be open via Zoom to all Commonwealth students, faculty, administrators and staff,
and to the public at large. The Sanctuary City cast and director will also take part in a moderated talk-back with
audience members at the conclusion of the final performance of the play, on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 4 at the
Alvina Krause Theatre. That final performance begins at 3 p.m. The discussion will be moderated by Jesús SalasElorza from the department of languages and cultures.
Atlantic Guitar Quartet to Perform Feb. 7
The Atlantic Guitar Quartet, a contemporary music ensemble dedicated to promoting the work of living
composers, will present a free concert at Bloomsburg University's K.S. Gross Auditorium in Carver Hall on
Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. The concert will include music by guitarist-composers Fred Frith, Olga Amelkina-Vera
and Ben Verdery, as well as music inspired by Leonard Cohen and Erik Satie. The quartet will also give a
masterclass for Bloomsburg University guitar students at noon on Feb. 7 in the Haas Center for the Arts, room
166. Both of these events are free and open to the public. Read more.

Items Needed for Annual Book Sale
The Friends of the Bloomsburg University Library Association (FOBULA) will hold its annual book sale for 2024
from Saturday, April 13, to Monday, April 15, in the Andruss Library Schweiker Room. The book sale has brought
in $48,400 since the first one was held 23 years ago. This money has gone toward several special projects, two of
which are the digitization and preservation of local and university historic materials and providing textbook
scholarships to deserving students. There is always a need for more books, CDs, and DVDs. The items can be
brought to the Andruss Library Circulation Desk anytime the building is open, and if you have a large number that
need to be picked up please contact Robert Dunkelburger. The Friends are looking for all types of books, both
fiction and nonfiction, in GOOD condition, that would appeal to a general audience, in addition to movies and
music. Items that do not sell well include outdated textbooks (more than ten years old), magazines,
journals, encyclopedias, and Reader's Digest condensed books.
Bridge Lessons and Games Offered at Town Library
Bob Reed (rreed@commonwealthu.edu), an adjunct faculty member in TRIO Student Support Services, is an
organizer of bridge lessons and games at the Bloomsburg town library every Monday. Lessons are at 11:15 a.m.
and the game at 1 p.m. Lessons on how to play bridge are presented in a group setting friendly and open to
questions. The two events can be attended separately or together. A donation of a dollar is requested to the
library.

A donation of a dollar is requested to the
library.
