BASEBALL OUTLOOK 1965
With the freshmen rule in efJect this year, the
Husky nine will be handicapped for depth. Indoor
pract:ce started the third week in February with
approximately 35 returning from last year's quad.
Lost through graduation are Jerry Doemlingpitcher, Terry Wood-pitcher, Larry Tironi-second
base, Lee Viera and Gene Cap s-outfielders, sh0r',stop-Scott Gross. and catcher-,Art Tinner. I,t will
ibe difficult to replace all-,1round player Tironi, who
led the team in batting at .4~3.
0
The six mainstays who will form the nucleus o.f
Coach Mentzer's team are John Gara-right field,
Ron Kirk-center field, Gary Horn-second and third
base, Ray Emma-first base. along with two ste,J.dy
pitchers, Roland Boyle and By Hopkins. Last season, Boyle posted a •4-l record and Hopkins split
three and three. E:mma had a good 1964 season at
the plate, hitting .415. If he can repe,3.t this performance, with additional hitting power coming
from Gara and Kirk, and if !Mentzer can find pitching suppovt from Boyle and Hopkins, the Huskies
could have a good year. Both Emm':t and Tironi
received honorable mention in N.A.I.A. selections
last year.
Additional pitching prospects are Jerry Doto,
,Frank Dowman and Michael Guber. The catching
department is wide for any of the following: Roy
Bowen, Bob Harvey. King 'Perry, or John Whitelock.
With other promising upperclassmen, Mentzer
:hopes to improve on last year's record of 8 wins-4
losses (3 of the losses by one run). Although there
is no definite freshmen schedule at present, it is
hoped several practice games c;1,n be scheduled so
Coaches Mentzer and McLaughlin c,an further evaluate these players for the 1966 varsity.
