BASEBALL OUTLOOK - 1962
The coming Baseball season brings with it hopeful
anticipation accompanied by many doubts and uncertainties. With only eight returning letterman, Coach
Zeigler will place his hopes in a relatively young
and inexperienced squad.
However, despite its apparent youth, the squad
thus far appears to be a very hard-working and
eager group. About SO men have reported for early
Spring training which will include an intensive
weight training program coupled with a great deal
of running and weekly blackboard sessions.
At an early glance, the pitching and catching
departments appear to be the strong areas with
Jim Dixon, Jerry Doemling, and Jim McKinley
returning to handle the pitching chores, and Jeff
Garrison and Art Tinner bolstering the catching
staff. Along with these veterans, several promising
newcomers and underclassmen are looking very good
in early drills. They include Ronald Hyde and Bob
Schiller, catchers, and Terry Wood, Frank Dowman,
Roy Herbert, Ken Mussleman, and Larry Lakatosh,
pitchers. In the infield, Gary Rupert, at shortstop,
is the only returning letterman. However, those
expecting to fill the vacated positions include Joe
Holden, Martin Rosato, Bill Moran, Ted Evanish,
and several additional underclassmen. In the outfield the returning lettermen include Bob Christina
and Don Springer. These veterans will be bolstered
by a promising group of hopefuls including Scrib
Watkins, Louis Ciocca, Gene Kapes, Dan Marks, and
Ron Barner.
Hitting potential always presents a doubtful situation and the weatherman usually plays a large role
in developing this vital aspect. Despite the weather,
it can be assumed with certainty that this young
ball club will show desire, determination, and improvement as the season materializes.
Scheduling appears to be one of the most serious
obstacles. The Huskies play two games immediately
following an Easter vacation of eleven days and
then play 10 games during the first 15 days of May,
a formidable schedule for the most experienced of
teams,
