Head Coach
Charles Chronister
Entering his thirteenth season as head coach at Bloomsburg University, Charles Chronister has continued Bloomsburg's fine basketball
tradition by leading the Huskies to winning seasons in all of his eleven
previous years at BU. His teams have compiled a 216-104 won-lost
record, besides winning numerous in-season tournaments and establishing over thirty Bloomsburg University team and individual marks. He
has also coached the Huskies in several post-season events including
their first ever PSAC crown and four visits to the NCAA Division II
national tournament. In 1974, the Huskies captured a NCAA Regional
Tournament to gain a quarterfinal berth against eventual champion
Morgan State while the 1981-82 squad dropped a first round decision to
semifinalist Cal-Poly. Two years ago the team was defeated in the
eastern regional finals by quarterfinalist Cheyney University who emerged victorious in three of four meetings with the Huskies that year.
The intense rivalry between Cheyney and Bloomsburg continued in
1982-83 as the Wolves once again defeated the Huskies for the
conference crown. However, this year it was Bloomsburg who knocked
off Cheyney to win the regional title. Eventual national champion Wright
State ended the hopes of the Huskies' further advancement by defeating
them in the quarterfinals. The Huskies' mentor has coached three All
Americans at BU--John Willis (1972-74), Jerry Radocha (1973-77), and
most recently, Jon Bardsley ( 1978-82).
A graduate of East Stroudsburg University with both his bachelor's
and master's degrees in health and physical education, Chronister was
an assistant coach for four years under Bob Hulton at Gettysburg
College. Prior to that, he coached for three seasons at Hanover (PA)
High School where his teams were a combined 59-9 while winning
county championships and participating in the PIAA District 111 playoffs.
Head Coach, Charles Chronister.
2
Assistants
Burt Reese
Burt Reese enters his sixteenth season as an assistant coach for the
Huskies. Reese coached the freshmen teams for seven years compiling
an 83-27 mark, but for the past seven seasons has worked directly with
Chronister and the varsity program. His most important duty is coordinating BU's recruiting efforts. He also received his bachelor's and
master's degrees at ESU. In addition, Reese serves as the head coach of
the highly successful men's and women's tennis teams.
Dr. Michael Herbert
Entering his nineteenth season is Dr. Michael Herbert. "Doc" has
served in numerous capacities with the team over the past eighteen
seasons including a three year period as freshmen coach. He received
his BS at the University of Maryland and his master's and doctorate at
Lehigh University. He also is the assistant tennis coach in charge of the
women's squad.
Jon Bardsley
Jon Bardsley enters his first season as a graduate assistant and is
working towards his master's degree in Sports Administration at Temple
University after earning his bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Bloomsburg University ('82). The four-year BU point guard ('78'82), holds all-time records for consecutive starts (107) and assists (589)
while ranking sixth in career points (1252) and was named as an All
American by Basketball Weekly his senior year.
Terry Conrad
Terry Conrad is another former guard under Chronister, and is
assistant coaching while completing his bachelor's degree in Secondary
Education at BU. The four-year letter winner ('79-'83) is ranked as the
school's eighth all-time scorer (1081 pis.) and owns the record of games
played (120).

The Season Ahead
The Bloomsburg University men's basketball program has enjoyed a
great number of successes in its 53 year history at the school but none of
those could have been any more pleasurable than the accomplishments
of last year's squad . The Huskies of Coach Charlie Chronister posted a
solid 23-10 record and reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals
despite losing four starters from a team that won 47 games and made
consecutive national tourney appearances in the two previous seasons.
Bloomsburg had to be the surprise of Division II basketball a year
ago , but certainly won't sneak up on anybody in the upcoming 1983-84
campaign as eight veterans are back to seek the club's fourth straight
NCAA invitation. On their march to the quarterfinal meeting with
eventual national champion Wright State, the Huskies gained a spot in
the Pennsylvania Conference Championship Game for the third straight
year, dropping a 63-55 decision to defending champion Cheyney . The
following week in the NCAA Eastern Regional, BU upended the Wolves
76-75 in an overtime thriller and then revenged a regular season loss by
downing Philadelphia Textile (73-66) for the title .
Senior guard Barry Francisco and sophomore forward Glenn Noack
head the list of returnees . A year ago Francisco led the squad in scoring
with a 14.7 average and was second in rebounding , pulling down 5.0 per
game. In addition , he handed out 87 assists . He was named tot he elite 11
man ECAC All-Star unit but was , surprisingly , only a second team
Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division pick . His list of honors also
includes Most Valuable Player of the NCAA East Regional , which the
Huskies won ; Bloomsburg 's Time Markets/ McDowell Oil " Player of the
Year;" Bloomsburg 's Underclass " Athlete of the Year;" and All-Tournament selection at the Pennsylvania Conference Championships and
Porreco Cup Tournament .
Noack was the ECAC's " Co-Rookie of the Year" and continued the
tradition of strong play at the forward position at Bloomsburg by scoring
12.2 points per game and leading the team in rebounding at a 5.7 clip . He
was also the team 's top free throw shooter, making 89 of 111 attempts or
80 .2%.
Two other sophomore forwards saw plenty of playing time--Shane
Planutis performed in all of the Huskies' 33 contests while Pat Flanagan
got time in all but one game. Planutis averaged 6.3 ppg . and 3.4 rebounds
and was the high scorer in Bloomsburg's 52-49victory over West Chester
in the PC 's first round playoffs and Flanagan averaged 3.9 ppg . and 2.5
rebounds .
Now that the football campaign has come to a close , Cas Koscio\ek
will turn in the shoulder pads and be available for duty at the guard spot
behind Francisco or at small forward . He averaged 1.6 ppg. in 1982-83.
The Huskies have a pair of talented centers who could see a lot of
action this season . Senior Randy Colone had the starting role early in the
season a year ago and Wes Wright took over the spot late in the year and
the twosome split the playing time . Colone averaged 7.2 ppg. and
collected 3.8 rebounds while leading the team in shooting percentage at
56.5% . Wright, meanwhile, scored 4.8 ppg . and also had an average of 3.8
rebounds per contest.
Newcomers will play a large role in the success of this year's unit as
the main question facing the coaching staff is who will replace departed
point guard Terry Conrad . BU's floor general graduated with a 13.8 ppg .
average and dished out a team high 97 assists but took a lot more than
just statistics with him . He was the team captain and leader and
Chronister needs to find a replacement early. He stated, "We don 't
expect anyone to come in and in one year make the contributions that
Terry made to our program during his four years. He was one of the finest
captains we 've ever had in terms of on and off the court leadership and
gave to the team intangibles that came as a result of experience and
personality." He added , "What we 're hoping for this year is to have
4
someone, or even two people1 provide the physical necessities of that
position ." Conrad also made very tangible contributions as evidenced by
the fact that he ended his career with 1081 points, one of only ten players
in the school 's history to break the 1000 point plateau.
Freshman Todd McLaughlin, a third team All-State selection, seems
to have the inside track at getting the job but will face a stern challenge
from two other first-year players. Greg Johnston who was an All-League
performer in the Northern Tier , and Jerome Brisbon who was a first team
Public League choice, should both see action early in the season .
Freshmen Bob McCullough and Dave Koslosky have shown great
promise in the pre-season drills and eventually should give the front line
solid depth.
"Last year a lot of people felt we'd be down, and we may have
surprised some folks--that will not be the case this year," stated
Chronister. "As defending regional champions, we will be one of the top
games on just about everyone's schedule and can look forward to
playing every night against our opponents' best effort.
He concluded , " In many ways, this team should be better because no
one played in as many tournaments or championship games as we did
last year, and we return four starters and two first-line subs from that
team."
Chronister enters his thirteenth year in charge of the program with an
overall record of 216-104 , a winning percentage of .675. He has never had
a losing season, and the Huskies will be seeking the school's eighteenth
straight winning campaign .

Bloomsburg Basketball
"A Winning Tradition"
Over the past 53 years, Bloomsburg University men's basketball
teams have compiled a 594-361 mark. From 1930-31 when the Huskies
went 12-1, up to 1982-83, Bloomsburg basketball has been the definition
of the word success, being victorious .622 percent of the time during
those 52 seasons (there was no sport scheduled in 1942-43), only nine
times have the Huskies had a sub .500 year. The last of those seasons was
1965-66 when Bloomsburg went 8-11.
George Buchheit was the Huskies' first head basketball coach and
started the winning tradition at BU by posting a 94-69 mark. Buchheit
coached through the 1945-46 season, with the exception of 1943-44, and
has a .577 winning percentage. Jack Llwellyn served as head coach for
Buchheit in 1943-44 and guided Bloomsburg to an 11-4 record.
The most successful coach, in terms of the number of wins, is current
coach Charlie Chronister. Now in his 13th year, Chronister's teams have
won 216 games and lost just 104.
In 1980-81, the Huskies won the Pennsylvania Conference Championship and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Two years
ago, Bloomsburg lost in the conference championship game to Cheyney
University and were then beaten again by the Wolves in the NCAA
Tournament. Chronister's 1981-82 team set the Bloomsburg record for
most wins in a season by posting a 24-7 record.
The intense rivalry between Cheyney and Bloomsburg continued in
1982-83 as the Wolves once again defeated the Huskies for the
conference crown. However, Bloomsburg knocked off Cheyney to win
the NCAA Eastern regional title. Eventual national champion Wright
State ended the hopes of the Huskies' further advancement by defeating
them in the quarterfinals.
Chronister has also coached many talented individuals, including the
top three scorers in Bloomsburg basketball history.
Bill Foster was Bloomsburg's most successful coach in terms of
winning percentage. Now coaching at the University of South Carolina,
Foster's teams went 45-11 (.804) in his three years at the helm (1960-63).
Foster has also coached at Duke, Utah and Rutgers.
The first mentor to have his team compete in conference play was
Harold Shelly (1949-60). Shelly's 1952-53 team went 11-6 and was
named as conference champions in a vote by sports writers. Shelly's
team was deserving of the championship as they posted a 10-2
conference record. Shelly's only nonwinning team was in 1959-60. In his
11 years, the Huskies went 112-74, which gives him the second highest
number of games won.
The only two coaches in Bloomsburg history not to end their tenures
with +.500 records are Pete Wisher and Robert Norton.
Wisher coached from 1946-49 and his teams compiled 25 wins and 27
losses. His best year was 1947-48 when the Huskies went 10-9.
Robert Norton took over after Foster and coached from 1963-66.
Although Norton's overall record was 28-30, he rebuilt the squad after
Foster's 17-4 1962-63 team graduated many.
Norton then passed the reigns on to Earl Voss ( 1967-71 ). Voss' team
racked up a 63-42 record, which ranks him fourth on the list of percent of
games won (.600). Voss has since moved on and is the current coach at
West Chester University, one of the Huskies opponents in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division.

Nelson Fieldhouse
"Home Of The Huskies"
The Nelson Fieldhouse, located on Bloomsburg University's upper
campus , serves as home for most of BU's athletic events. The facility has
all the necessary ingredients as it holds a 3000 seat arena for all home
wrestling and basketball games, an indoor track, two tennis courts, an
olympic size swimming pool , and two handball / racquetball courts. The
building has classroom and office space for use by the health/ physical
education and athletic staffs. Nelson also houses the wrestling practice
room, which is a fully padded area located on the second floor. A totally
equipped Nautilus weight room adds to the strength and conditioning
areas of the program , and Nelson also offers a training room staffed by a
full-time physical therapist and no less than six student assistants. Also
an equipment manager handles the needs of most of Bloomsburg's 18
varsity athletic teams.
Head Trainer
Art Hopkins
Art is in his first year as the Head
Trainer at Bloomsburg. He is a licensed
Physical Therapist (LPT) and received
his certificate from Hahneman Hospital
in Philadelphia and his undergraduate
degree at East Stroudsburg .
Equipment Manager
Ron Morgan
Mr. Ron Morgan has served as Bloomsburg's equipment manager for the past
ten years. Ron is located in the Nelson
Fieldhouse and handles most of the equipment needs of BU's 18 varsity programs.

Husky Basketball School
The Husky Basketball School will be entering its ninth year this
summer under directors Charlie Chronister and Burt Reese (see dates
below).
The school is held on the Bloomsburg University campus which
affords campers the opportunity to use the various facilities, reside in
one of the many modern dormitories, and be served three meals daily in
the Scranton Commons.
Instructional programs are designed to improve the individual
fundamentals of the young men as well as the incorporation of these
techniques into a team concept.
A quality staff of resident high school and college coaches , along
with several guest lecturers, provide campers with a variety of new ideas
and the best learning situation available .
