HEAD COACH
As CHARLES CHRONISTER enters his
fourth season as head coach of the
Huskies he can look back on three of
the most successful years in the history of Bloomsburg Basketball. His
" Huskies on the Hill " have compiled
records of 18-7, 20-5, and 22-6 for a
winning percentage of .769! During
these years his teams have won numerous in-season tournaments and
each year have been invited to participate in a postseason tournament as a result of their performance and
over-all season record!
Along with his coaching responsibilities, Chronister has
been active in the National Coaches Association as the
Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee for District II of
the NCAA; served as a guest lecturer at many of the best
basketball schools and camps in the East; and in May of
this year traveled to Salvador, Brazil to present clincs to
the players and coaches of that city and area .
A native of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Chronister attended Bermudian Springs High School where he was a
standout athlete. He matriculated at East Stroudsburg
State College and played varsity basketball and baseball
for the Warriors. He earned both his Bachelor of Science
and Master of Science degrees in Health and Physical
Education at ESSC.
1
During the 1962-63 season at East Stroudsburg, he
served as freshman basketball coach and guided the team
to a 17-2 record. He went to Gettysburg after three successful years at Hanover (Pa.) High School. At Hanover,
his jayvee and varsity teams were 59-9 while winning
county championships and participating in the PIAA District Ill Class A playoffs.
Coach Chronister joined the Bloomsburg faculty during
the summer of 1971 coming from Geaysburg College
where he was the assistant basketball coach for four years_
In addition to coaching the freshman team at Gettysburg,
one of his chief responsibilities was recruiting talent for
head coach Bob Hulton. This aspect of his coaching background has been most valuable to Bloomsburg State as
he and assistant Coach Burt Reese have filled the team
roster with outstanding a:hletes in their quest to maintain
and improve one of the outstanding small college basketball programs in the East.
Chronister is married to the former Carol L. Strausbaugh
of Hanover, Pa. They have two daughters, Lee Ann, age
7 and Caryn Lynn, age 5. The Chronisters reside at 1248
Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg , Pennsylvania.
DEPARTMENT CHAIRMAN
DR. CONRAD A. BAUTZ was , appointed
Chairman, Department of Health, Physical
Education, and Athletics in June, 1972. A
1956 Brooklyn College graduate, he served
at his Alma Mater in a number of capacities
prior to coming to Bloomsburg.
Dr. Bautz is responsible for the odminis•
!ration ond supervision of the total physical
education and athletic program at the college, including varsity athletics .
ASSIST ANT COACH
"BU RT REESE is without question the outstanding assistant coach in the Pennsylvania
Conference, ond oe of the finest assistant
coaches found in any program in the country! His record speaks for itself. As a freshman coach, his teams have won 71 games
and lost only 23 over o six year span. As
coordinator of our recruiting program , his
efforts have produced talent for the team
that has mode us a conference title contender
and a consistent participator in post-season
tournaments. His value as a practice and
game coach is immeasurable and greatly
significant , witnessed by the manner in which our athletes perform and
the results achieved! " These are not only the words of head coach
Charles Chronister , but certainly the thoughts of all of the fans and
friends of Bloomsburg State basketball.
A native of Taylor, Pennsylvania, he received both his Bachelor of
Science and his Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg State
College. At ESSC he assisted in the basketball and tennis programs as
a graduate assistant .
After leaving ESSC , he joined the faculty of Old Forge !Pa .} High
School where he was assistant basketball and football coach . He was
next Athletic Director , ten,;is, and assistant basketball coach at Abington Heights Hi gh School, Clarks Summit !Pa.} for 3½ years.
·FA CUL TY ASSIST ANT
DR . MICHAEL HERBERT, a former tennis and
cross country coach at BSC, hos been active
assisting in many phases of the basketball
program for the past r~i'n"e years on a voluntary basis . A native of Lansford , Pennsylvania, ·' Doc·' received his degrees at the
University of Maryland and Lehigh University and is a professor of Biology . He is very
knowledgeable on the game of basketball
and his doily assistance is a valuable asset
to the t1usky program .
TRAINER
Trainer PAUL SLOCUM, a native of Massachusetts, was appointed Physical Therapist at
BSC in the fall of 1972. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dakota Wesleyan
University, S. Dakota , and was awarded his
Certificate of Physical Therapy from the
School of Allied Medical Professions, University of Pennsylvania; he was recently licensed
for the state of Pennsylvania . In addition to
his trainer duties for the varsity and intramural programs, he also serves as physical
therapist for the student body and members
of the faculty.
SEASON'S OUTLOOK
A big question for everyone interested in Husky basketball is how do you follow the fine accomplishments of
last year's team which include: NCAA Mid-East Regional
champions and a trip to the National Championship Tournament; co-champions of the ECAC Division Ill; co-leaders
in the Pennsylvania Conference's Eastern Division; Indiana
Christmas Tree Tournament champions; ranked eighth in
team defense and ninth in average scoring margin among
NCAA Division II colleges in the country; best record in
the school's history; ten major school records established
by the team and nine major records established by individuals; the recognition of John Willis as the most significant individual performer in the history of Bloomsburg
State basketball as he established eleven season and
career records; and the outstanding play of seniors Tony
DaRe, Gary Choyka, and Joe Kempski.
Coach Charles Chronister states, "I realize that many
people are looking to 1974-75 as a rebuilding year for our
program and that we are given little or no chance of
coming close to the kind of success we have enjoyed over
the past three years, particularly last year. While it is true
that we lost some very talented and experienced players,
it is also true that we have a number of very gifted young
athletes in our present program. Talent will not be a problem this season as I feel we have more outstanding players
than in any of my previous three years here at Bloomsburg.
What could present some anxious moments will be the
lack of experience of a number of the younger players
in a pressure varsity situation against a much tougher
schedule.
"When I hear people speak of rebuilding, I cannot
help but think they are rationalizing an excuse for losing.
For the record, if we lose it is because a good team played
a good game against us that night! We have the type of
athlete that has the intelligence to do a number of things
and the talent to do them well. I like the balance, enthusiasm and competitiveness of this team and I feel confident that they will develop their own identity as one of
the most exciting and successful teams ever seen here at
Bloomsburg State!"
Giving credibility to the optimism of Chronister is the
return of four lettermen from last season's 22-6 varsity,
five members of the 15-1 JV team, and the addition of
two highly touted freshmen.
Leading the return of lettermen are co-captains 6'5"
Gary Tyler, who will be starting for his third season, and
5'11 H Mike Ognosky, who will be directing the Husky attack from the point-guard position.
Also returning is last year's second leading scorer and
rebounder, 6'5" Jerry Radocha, who established a school
scoring record for a freshman by hooping 282 points. The
fourth letterman is the young man who won the praise
and respect of all Husky fans and opponents with his
scoring and rebounding antics of a year ago, 6'3" Rick
Evans.
From last year's JV team is their leading scorer 6'0"
Rick Joseph, playmakers 6'2" Steve Rosenberry and 5'10"
Nat Id let, pivotman 6' 6" Mark Vanderbeck, and scorer,
rebounder 6'3" Joe Ludroff.
The only junior on this squad is 6'2" Rich Yanni, who
presents a constant scoring threat and a hustling, aggressive style of defensive play. Two prize recruits that are
expected to add great depth and talent to the Husky
attack are a pair of 6' 5" freshmen Al Williams of
Brooklyn, N .Y. and Steve Bright, a second team all-state
selection last year from Central Columbia High School
near Bloomsburg.
Over the past few years, the BSC schedule has seen
a number of changes and this year finds the Huskies with
a formidable collection of opponents. Along with the
traditionally tough league teams of Cheyney, Mansfield,
Millersville, and East Stroudsburg, two other division performers, Shippensburg and West Chester, are beginning
to appear near the top of the standings.
Two tournaments highlight the holidays with the team
first traveling to Oswego, N .Y. and then to Montclair,
N.J. Probably the most difficult road trip in the history of
Bloomsburg basketball will occur in January when the
Huskies travel to Roanoke College and Old Dominion
University. Both of these teams are consistently ranked
among the top small college teams in the country and
their addition to the schedule presents a significant challenge to the basketball program at Bloomsburg State.

MIKE OGNOSKY - 5'11 ", 155, sen ior, Lake Ariel, Pa. Mike is a twoyear letterman that will be called on
to run the Husky attack from the
point-guard position. last year Mike
played one of his best games as he
directed the winning effort against
Cheyney. This victory was most significant in the Huskies going on to
post-season play and in Mike beNo. 12.13 .
coming a starting guard during the
NCAA playoffs and tournament in Evansville. One of the
high percentage shooters on the team, Mike shot 47%
from the field and 80% from the foul Fne last season. He
was an outstanding performer at North Pocono H.S. where
he played for "Chippy" Salerno. Enrolled as a social
studies major in the School of Professional Studies, Mike
hopes for a career in teaching.

6'5", 190, senior,
Audubon, Pa. Gary returns for his
senior season after gaining a starting position as both a sophomore
and junior. Those two teams compiled a 42-11 record and Gary was
one of the main reasons for that
success. Gary's contributions are
those that may go unnoticed by the
average fan-he is an accomplished
rebounder and defensive player, the

things that win games! His steady, fundamentally sound
style of play can already be seen as a positive influence
on the team's younger members. Gary played his high
school basketball at Methacton in the tough Suburban I
League near Philadelphia. Enrolled in the School of Business, Gary has established an outstanding academic fecord and has epitomized the term student-athlete.

STEVE BRIGHT - 6'5", 195, Freshman, Bloomsburg, Pa. Steve comes
to Bloomsburg State as one of the
most publicized players in recent
history. The fact that he was named
on the all-state·s second team will
draw attention to his play for the
Huskies-but beyond that, he gained
his recognition and reputation by
No. 34.35
playing for Duane Ford at nearby
Central Columbia H.S.
While at Central Columbia, Steve was accorded just
about all of the honors available during his last two
years. An exceptionally strong rebounder, he possessed
the scoring touch to average well over 20 points a game
for two seasons! Currently Steve has lived up to and even
surpassed all expectations of Coach Chronister and he
will be a significant force in the Huskies' plans.
An honor student in high school, S'.eve is enrolled in
the School of Business and hopes for a career in accounting . Fortunately for Bloomsburg, it will have to wait for
four more years.
RICHARD EVANS - 6'3", 1B5, sophomore, Wayne, Pa. Mr. Excitement
of the 1973-74 team! When Rick
came into the game, things happenened and it was usually good! As a
freshman, Rick played in all 2B
games, both as a starter and a very
reliable sixth man. The experience
gained by Rick last year will prove
No. 42-43
invaluable during this season and
the next two years for Husky basketball. A former high school all-conference player in the
Central League and an All-Delaware County selection,
Rick brought his talents to the Hill where he averaged
eight points and six rebounds a game. One of the most
personable members of the team, Rick is enrolled in the
School of Business.

NATHANIEL IDLET-5'10", 160,sophomore, Brooklyn, N.Y. Nat moves up
to the varsity after being one of the
talented guards on last year's outstanding JV team. Nat brings an
enormous amount of talent into the
program with his quickness and instincts for the game. As a freshman,
he averaged 9 p.p.g. and as he
No. 14-15
gains valuable experience, it is just
a matter of time until he contributes
to the Huskies' pressing and running game. One of the
truly bright spots for not only the present year, but of
future Bloomsburg State teams! Nat is interested in the
possibilities of a future in Special Education.

game. One of his best games was against the Penn frosh
in the Palestra where he netted 30 points in his team's
only loss of the season. Rick played for John Eyster at
West York H.S. where he led his team into the P.I.A.A.
Class A Post-Season Tournament. While at West York,
he received All-Conference and All-State recognition for
his fine play on an outstanding team. Rick is enrolled in
the School of Arts and Sciences.

JOE LUDROF - 6'3", 185, sophomore, Allentown, Pa. Joe is one of
those hard-nose players that always
seems to be around the ball. As a
member of the JV team last year, he
was the second leading scorer averaging 15.4 p.p.g. and shot 50% from
the floor. He was also the second
leading rebounder grabbing an averNo. 30-31
age of 13.1 per game. Joe will be
counted on to lend support to our
corps of forwards as both a scorer and tough rebounder.
Joe is enrolled in our School of Business and plans to
follow a career in Business Administration.
ALEJANDRO WILLIAMS - 6'5", 160,
freshman, Brooklyn, N.Y. From an
honor student and outstanding athlete at Brooklyn's Art & Design H.S.
a year ago, Al brings his talents to
Bloomsburg and immediately becomes a significant factor in the
Huskies' 1974-75 team! Brought up
playing against the tough competiNo. 24-25
tion found in New York City, Al has
developed a style of play that will
enable him to go inside to score and rebound, while still
having the quickness and agility to handle the ball and
press in areas away from the basket. Comments Coach
Chronister: "Last season we were fortunate to have Rick
Evans and Jerry Radocha move right into our varsity lineup, and this year I just cannot imagine any team in our
conference with two better freshmen than Steve Bright
and Al Williams!" A fine student, Al is enrolled in the
School of Business.
STEVE ROSENBERRY 6'2", 150,
sophomore, Camp Hill, Pa . As a
freshman, Steve was the guard that
led the offensive attack on the JV
team that averaged 84 p.p.g. As a
sophomore, his outstanding ball
handling and passing skills will be a
,
significant factor in the Huskies ' fast
break style of play. Possessed with
No. 22-23
amazing quickness on both offense
and defense, Steve averaged 10
p.p.g . and handed out 6.5 assists per game as a freshman. It is a safe bet that when Steve enters the game,
things will start to move and all Husky fans will be
caught up in the excitement that Steve can generate.
Steve is interested in the History Department in our School
of Pre-Professional Studies.
~
MARK VANDERBECK - 6'6", 210,
sophomore, Norristown, Pa. Mark is
the " Big Man " on this year 's varsity
squad. According to Coach Chronister, the improvement made by Mark
has been nothing short of fantastic.
After coming off of a freshman year
that saw him average 12 p.p.g.
(47%) and 13 rebounds, Mark worked
No. 40-41
religiously on a weight and ploying
program throughout the spring and
summer. The results are most obvious and his presence
around the basket area will be a factor in the success of
the Huskies this winter. Probably the most significant contributions that will be made by Mark this year will be
those of defense and rebounding-those tough things
that win games and championships! Mark is looking toward a career in business economics.
RICHARD YANNI - 6'2", 170, junior, Ambler, Pa. Rich is the only
junior member of this relatively
young Husky team and if some of
the less experienced players watch
his defensive style of play and his
ability to release himself on offense
for his good jump shot, they will
'1
(1 instantly become aware of how winNo. 20.21
ning basketball is played. As a high
school player, he gained All-Conference and All-State recognition by leading his Wissahickon
team to a 25-1 season. He was the leading scorer (17
p.p.g.) on a 14-1 JV team his freshman year and it is
hoped these winning w.ays continue into 1974-75. Rich is
a student in our School of Business.

JERRY RADOCHA- 6'5", 185, sophomore, New Cumberland, Pa. Jerry
came to Bloomsburg a year ago as
one of the most publicized recruits
in recent years and much was expected of his performance - and,
how he performed! Not only was he
the second leading scorer on the
team averaging 10.1 p.p.g. (50.4%)
No. 44-45
and establishing a school record for
points scored by a fr~hman (282),
but he was the second leading rebounder with 8.2 per
game, handled the ball against the press and was often
called on to defense the opponent"s tallest forward! One
of the best passers on the team, Jerry adds a completely
new dimension to the Husky style of play with his talents
and understanding of the game.
As a high school player, Jerry was accorded All-Conference and All-State honors while being selected as the
Outstanding Class B player in the Harrisburg area. Last
season he was chosen on the All-Tournament team at the
Roanoke Classic and this year he has to be considered
one of the finest players in the Pennsylvania Conference.
Jerry is enrolled in the School of Business.

Cheyney. This victory was most significant in the Huskies going on to

high percentage shooters on the team, Mike shot 47%
from the field and 80% from the foul Fne last season. He
was an outstanding performer at North Pocono H.S. where
he played for "Chippy" Salerno. Enrolled as a social
studies major in the School of Professional Studies, Mike
hopes for a career in teaching.

Audubon, Pa. Gary returns for his
senior season after gaining a starting position as both a sophomore

one of the main reasons for that
success. Gary's contributions are
those that may go unnoticed by the
average fan-he is an accomplished
rebounder and defensive player, the

things that win games! His steady, fundamentally sound
style of play can already be seen as a positive influence
on the team's younger members. Gary played his high
school basketball at Methacton in the tough Suburban I
League near Philadelphia. Enrolled in the School of Business, Gary has established an outstanding academic fecord and has epitomized the term student-athlete.

STEVE BRIGHT - 6'5", 195, Freshman, Bloomsburg, Pa. Steve comes
to Bloomsburg State as one of the
most publicized players in recent
history. The fact that he was named
on the all-state·s second team will
draw attention to his play for the
Huskies-but beyond that, he gained
his recognition and reputation by
No. 34.35
playing for Duane Ford at nearby
Central Columbia H.S.
While at Central Columbia, Steve was accorded just
about all of the honors available during his last two
years. An exceptionally strong rebounder, he possessed
the scoring touch to average well over 20 points a game
for two seasons! Currently Steve has lived up to and even
surpassed all expectations of Coach Chronister and he
will be a significant force in the Huskies' plans.
An honor student in high school, S'.eve is enrolled in
the School of Business and hopes for a career in accounting . Fortunately for Bloomsburg, it will have to wait for
four more years.
RICHARD EVANS - 6'3", 1B5, sophomore, Wayne, Pa. Mr. Excitement
of the 1973-74 team! When Rick
came into the game, things happenened and it was usually good! As a
freshman, Rick played in all 2B
games, both as a starter and a very
reliable sixth man. The experience
gained by Rick last year will prove
No. 42-43
invaluable during this season and
the next two years for Husky basketball. A former high school all-conference player in the
Central League and an All-Delaware County selection,
Rick brought his talents to the Hill where he averaged
eight points and six rebounds a game. One of the most
personable members of the team, Rick is enrolled in the
School of Business.

NATHANIEL IDLET-5'10", 160,sophomore, Brooklyn, N.Y. Nat moves up
to the varsity after being one of the
talented guards on last year's outstanding JV team. Nat brings an
enormous amount of talent into the
program with his quickness and instincts for the game. As a freshman,
he averaged 9 p.p.g. and as he
No. 14-15
gains valuable experience, it is just
a matter of time until he contributes
to the Huskies' pressing and running game. One of the
truly bright spots for not only the present year, but of
future Bloomsburg State teams! Nat is interested in the
possibilities of a future in Special Education.

game. One of his best games was against the Penn frosh
in the Palestra where he netted 30 points in his team's
only loss of the season. Rick played for John Eyster at
West York H.S. where he led his team into the P.I.A.A.

he received All-Conference and All-State recognition for
his fine play on an outstanding team. Rick is enrolled in

JOE LUDROF - 6'3", 185, sophomore, Allentown, Pa. Joe is one of
those hard-nose players that always
seems to be around the ball. As a
member of the JV team last year, he
was the second leading scorer averaging 15.4 p.p.g. and shot 50% from
the floor. He was also the second
leading rebounder grabbing an averNo. 30-31
age of 13.1 per game. Joe will be
counted on to lend support to our
corps of forwards as both a scorer and tough rebounder.
Joe is enrolled in our School of Business and plans to
follow a career in Business Administration.
ALEJANDRO WILLIAMS - 6'5", 160,
freshman, Brooklyn, N.Y. From an
honor student and outstanding athlete at Brooklyn's Art & Design H.S.
a year ago, Al brings his talents to
Bloomsburg and immediately becomes a significant factor in the
Huskies' 1974-75 team! Brought up
playing against the tough competiNo. 24-25
tion found in New York City, Al has
developed a style of play that will
enable him to go inside to score and rebound, while still
having the quickness and agility to handle the ball and
press in areas away from the basket. Comments Coach
Chronister: "Last season we were fortunate to have Rick
Evans and Jerry Radocha move right into our varsity lineup, and this year I just cannot imagine any team in our
conference with two better freshmen than Steve Bright
and Al Williams!" A fine student, Al is enrolled in the
School of Business.
STEVE ROSENBERRY 6'2", 150,
sophomore, Camp Hill, Pa . As a
freshman, Steve was the guard that
led the offensive attack on the JV
team that averaged 84 p.p.g. As a
sophomore, his outstanding ball
handling and passing skills will be a
,
significant factor in the Huskies ' fast
break style of play. Possessed with
No. 22-23
amazing quickness on both offense
and defense, Steve averaged 10
p.p.g . and handed out 6.5 assists per game as a freshman. It is a safe bet that when Steve enters the game,
things will start to move and all Husky fans will be
caught up in the excitement that Steve can generate.
Steve is interested in the History Department in our School
of Pre-Professional Studies.
~
MARK VANDERBECK - 6'6", 210,
sophomore, Norristown, Pa. Mark is
the " Big Man " on this year 's varsity
squad. According to Coach Chronister, the improvement made by Mark
has been nothing short of fantastic.
After coming off of a freshman year
that saw him average 12 p.p.g.
(47%) and 13 rebounds, Mark worked
No. 40-41
religiously on a weight and ploying
program throughout the spring and
summer. The results are most obvious and his presence
around the basket area will be a factor in the success of
the Huskies this winter. Probably the most significant contributions that will be made by Mark this year will be
those of defense and rebounding-those tough things
that win games and championships! Mark is looking toward a career in business economics.
RICHARD YANNI - 6'2", 170, junior, Ambler, Pa. Rich is the only
junior member of this relatively
young Husky team and if some of
the less experienced players watch
his defensive style of play and his
ability to release himself on offense
for his good jump shot, they will
'1
(1 instantly become aware of how winNo. 20.21
ning basketball is played. As a high
school player, he gained All-Conference and All-State recognition by leading his Wissahickon
team to a 25-1 season. He was the leading scorer (17
p.p.g.) on a 14-1 JV team his freshman year and it is
hoped these winning w.ays continue into 1974-75. Rich is
a student in our School of Business.

JERRY RADOCHA- 6'5", 185, sophomore, New Cumberland, Pa. Jerry
came to Bloomsburg a year ago as
one of the most publicized recruits
in recent years and much was expected of his performance - and,
how he performed! Not only was he
the second leading scorer on the
team averaging 10.1 p.p.g. (50.4%)
No. 44-45
and establishing a school record for
points scored by a fr~hman (282),
but he was the second leading rebounder with 8.2 per
game, handled the ball against the press and was often
called on to defense the opponent"s tallest forward! One
of the best passers on the team, Jerry adds a completely
new dimension to the Husky style of play with his talents
and understanding of the game.
As a high school player, Jerry was accorded All-Conference and All-State honors while being selected as the
Outstanding Class B player in the Harrisburg area. Last
season he was chosen on the All-Tournament team at the
Roanoke Classic and this year he has to be considered
one of the finest players in the Pennsylvania Conference.
Jerry is enrolled in the School of Business.
