''HUSKIES''
HEAD COACH
CHARLES CHRONISTER begins
his second year at the helm of the
Huskies after posting a fine 18-7 overall
record last year. Chronister, a former
assistant basketball coach at Gettysburg
College, joined the BSC faculty during
the middle of 1971 . He has a great
repertoire with his players, which is the
mark of a successful coach.
A native of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Chronister attended Bermudian Springs High School where
he was a standout athlete. He matriculated at East Stroudsburg
State College and played varsity basketball and baseball for the
Warriors. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of
Science degrees in Health and Physical Education at ESSC.
During the 1962-63 season at East Stroudsburg, he served
as freshman basketball coach and guided the team to a 17-2
record. He went to Gettysburg after three successful years at
Hanover (Pa.I High School. At Hanover, his jayvee and varsity
teams were 59-9 while winning county championships and
participating in the PIAA District 111 Class A playoffs.
In addition to coaching the freshman team at Gettysburg,
one of his chief responsibilities was recruiting talent for head
coach Bob Hulton. This aspect of his coaching career should
enable him to oversee and participate in the obtaining of future
talent for BSC.
Chronister is marr ied to the tormer Carol L. Strausbaugh of
Hanover, Pa. They have two daughters, Lee Ann, age 4, and Caryn
Lynn, age 2. The Chronisters reside at 1248 Old Berwick Road,
Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
FRESHMAN COACH
BURTON REESE took over the
reins of the frosh cagers at mid-season
of 1968-69 when he joined the BSC
Department of Physical Education in
January. His charges won eight of the
remaining eleven games and finished the
season with a 1 2-5 record. Over the
past three years he has posted records
of 12-5, 10-8, and 12-3 respectively.
A native of Taylor, Penna., he
received both his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Education
degrees at East Stroudsburg State College. At ESSC he assisted (n
the basketball and tennis programs as a graduate assistant.
After leaving ESSC, he joined the faculty of Old Forge (Pa.I
High School where he was assistant basketball and football
coach. He was next Athletic Director , tennis, and JV basketball
coach at Abington Heights High School, Clarks Summit (Pa.I for
3'/2 years. A former star athlete at Taylor High School and ESSC,
Reese has remained active in amateur circles of both tennis and
basketball.
He has also served as tennis coach at BSC for the past
three seasons.
FACULTY ASSISTANT
DR . MICHAEL HERBERT, a former tennis and cross country coach at
BSC, has been active assisting in many
phases of the basketball program for the
pest eight years on a voluntary basis. A
native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, " Doc"
received his degrees at the University of
Maryland and Lehigh University and is a
professor of Biology.
Season's Outlook
Coach Chronister is looking forward to the 1972-73
basketball season with great optimism as BSC has perhaps the best
basketball talent it has had in the past ten years.
Chronister has four lettermen, one transfer, six sophomores,
and an injured returnee to bolster the hopes of improving upon
last year's 18-7 overall record and 11-3 Pennsylvania Conference
record. The Huskies tied East Stroudsburg for second place behind
Cheyney in the eastern division of the Pennsylvania Conference
standings and were runner-up to University of Maryland, Eastern
Shore, in District 19 NAIA playoffs.
Heading the lettermen are 5'10" senior captain Art
Luptowski, one of the best ball handlers and playmakers in
BSC's history, and 6'8" junior John Willis, a NAIA Honorable
Mention All-American last year as a sophomore. Willis averaged
14.5 p.p.g. last year and Luptowski, 11.0 p.p.g. Both of these
players have possibilities for All-East and All-American honors.
Willis, who
is a great shooter for a big man and a strong
rebounder, improved greatly at the end of the 1971-72 season
when he scored 27 points against Cheyney and 32 against
Millersville. Luptowski can score if needed and is a fine leader and
clutch player, and possibly the best guard in the Pennsylvania
Conference at both ends of the floor.
The other two lettermen are a pair of juniors, 6'0" Gary
Chayka and 5'10" Tony DaRe. Chayka is an outstanding outside
shooter with a quick, soft shot and last year was proficient
entering a game and scoring three or four baskets in a row. DaRe,
also a fine outside shooter and driver, will graduate from a backup
role to Luptowski, to a starting berth.
6'3" junior Joe Kempski, a transfer from Farmingdale
Community College, not only possesses a good shot but is also a
tough defensive player. Gary Beatty, a 6'6" senior who sat out
last year due to a knee injury, is back in uniform and will be a key
factor in the Husky attack.
Outstanding sophomores are 6'4" Gary Tyler, who shoots
well from both the outside and inside and moves well without the
ball, but must look to the basket more for his own plays; and 6'4"
Dick Grace, who is a great maneuverer around the basket. The
other three sophomores are 6'6" John Kesseg, who will be used
in a relief role at center for Willis, and a pair of 5'11 inchers, Mike
Ognosky and Joe Wo:,ds, both of whom are proficient scorers and
will be used in back court action. Kesseg did not play on last
year's frosh squad that posted a 12-3 record.
Lost through graduation were: 6'3" Paul Kuhn, a fine guard
who averaged 16.8 p.p.g.; 6'5" Howard Johnson, a strong
rebounder who contributed 14.5 p.p.g.; and 6'3" Bob Consorti, a
fine off-the-bench scorer and rebounder.
Chronister does not plan to use freshmen on the varsity as
the above players should be able to do the job. The Huskies, in
addition to the Pennsylvania Conference opponents on their 24game
schedule,
are
looking forwa,d to the Christmas Tree
Tournament at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the trip to the
College of the Virgin Islands, and other outside opponents such as
York, Kings, Lycoming, Wilmington, Baptist Bible, and Edinboro,
a new comer to the schedule from the western division .of the
Pennsylvania Conference.
