TEAM OUTLOOK
Coach Earl Voss has repeatedly said, "With the
amount of competition in the Pennsylvania Conference, it is difficult to make any solid predictions
about your own team." Voss feels that last year's
15-8 record and a 92-90 loss in double overtime to
Mansfield in the District 19 playoffs, will be difficult
to top because of the many outstanding ballplayers
returning throughout the Pennsylvania and NAIA
Conferences.
Any hope the Huskies have for a good season
will depend on how well they use the best height
advantage they have had in recent years and how
well they play defense. Lost through graduation were
Mark Yanchek, who averaged 16.7 p.p.g. and was
the team's third leading rebounder; captain Bob
Snyder, who led the team in scoring with 17.0 p.p.g.
and was an outstanding leader and playmaker; Larry
Monaghan, standout long distance sharpshooter and
ballhandler; and Bill Mastropietro, the team's defensive specialist.
The leading veterans from last year's squad are:
6'3" Jim Platukis, who was the leading rebounder
with 11.8 per game and third in scoring with 13.3
p.p.g.; 6'5" Howard Johnson, second in rebounding
with a 10.4 average and the fourth in scoring with
12.7 p.p.g.; 6'3" Paul Kuhn, who should improve
vastly on his 7.9 p.p.g. average; 6' Tom Wilson, a
dribbling master who should take over the reins as
playmaker; 6' Dennis Mummey, a long range sharpshooter who was on the injured list last year; and
6'5" Dave Suda, an excellent rebounder. Also returning after sitting out last year with an injury is
6'3" Bob Consorti. Ted Lawson and Bob Walsh, both
6'1", will be available for inside and side duty,
respectively.
Sophomores expected to aid Voss are: 6'5" Dennis
Mealy, 6'6" Gary Beatty, 6' Bill Schemeck, 5'11"
Dave Dickens, 6'3" Bob Fadden, 5'9" Art Luptowski,
and 6' Mike Schwartz. Mealy led last year's
frosh in scoring with a 13.7 p.p.g. average,
and was followed by Beatty (12.4), Schemeck (11.6),
Fadden(ll.1), and Dickens (10.9). Beatty led in rebounding with 10 a game with Fadden averaging 9
and Mealy 8.
Voss hopes to be able to mesh the above material
into a winning combination to open against the
strong Rams at West ChestE'r State College on
December 2.
