TEAM OUTLOOK
Since basketball and football are the only two
varsity sports at Bloomsburg State College which
do not permit freshmen participation, Coach Earl
Voss will be relying on seven lettermen and 4 or 5
other promising candidates to carry the majority of
the playing load in a season that includes 19 games
plus two holiday tournaments.
"When you lose your top scorer and rebounder,
and your top playmaker through graduation, you
have quite a gap to fill," Voss stated as initial practice sessions began. Gone from last year are 6'4"
Jim Dulaney, 20.2 p .p.g.av. and 13 rebounds p.g.av.
and Palmer Toto, a 5'11" ball magician who spearheaded last year's Husky attack.
The Huskies might very well have a pair of dual
playmakers in captain Bob Snyder, last year's second
leading scorer with a 15.5 p.p.g.av., and Larry Monaghan, who does quite well in the ball handling department. Tom Wilson, another smooth ball handler,
will also be available for back court duty. The leading
candidate to take over where Dulaney left off is 6'4"
Mark Yanchek, who could have a great year. The
number one defensive specialist will still be 6'1"
Bill Mastropietro. Snyder, along with Monaghan and
Dennis Mummey, are expected to be the outside cord
zippers.
Ted Lawson, a 6'1" junior from Chester, was out
last year due to an injury and may be a surprise
performer this year. Jim Platukis, a West Hazleton
product and a starter last year, will be back hitting
the boards and should average in double figures.
Promising sophomores include three performers
from last year's freshmen squad that posted a 10-4
record. They are 6'5" Joe Dudeck from Shamokin,
6'5" Howard Johnson from New Castle, Delaware,
6'3" Paul Kuhn from Lebanon. Another prospect
is Dave Suda, Wilkes-Barre, a transfer student from
Luzerne County Junior College.
Voss' philosophy is that a team with good morale
will overcome many obstacles, and he has concentrated his efforts in this area in the many weeks of preseason practice sessions. "Although we expect to run
a great deal, we are still building our hopes around
a good defense," Voss stated. Competition in the
Pennsylvania Conference should be better than ever
this season.
