BASKETBALL OUTLOOK -
1968
"With competition improving in the Pennsylvania
State College Athletic Conference each year, it is
difficult to make any solid predictions about your
own ball team," coach Earl Voss stated looking
forward to the coming season. "I think we will find
again this year that many games will be decided by
a one-to-three point margin. Our biggest aim is to
overcome our lack of heighth with hustle, determination, and good ball handling," he said. "We have
the material for a hustling team, but it is going to he
up to the boys to put forth that extra desire that
spells the difference between victory and defeat."
The two leading returning veterans from the last
year's team (13-7) are ball handler specialist Palmer
Toto, who averaged 13.4 points per game and 6'4" Jim
Delaney, the team's leading rebounder who averaged
15.l points per game. Toto should be one of the
best playmakers in the P.S.C.A.C. Back also will be
Jack Carney, the team's leading scorer in the 1966-67
season, with a 19.4 average (Jack expects to regain
his shooting form this year); Bob Snyder, who
averaged 8.6 points per game as sixth man last
season (also an excellent ball handler); Bill Mastropietro, the team's outstanding defense specialist and
hustler; Mark Yancheck, 6'4" leaper; and sharpshooter
Larry Monaghan.
Up from last year's freshman team (13-6) are
James Platukis, 6'3" forward; Dennis Mummy,
S'll" frosh high scorer; Ted Lawson, 6'1" guard;
Tom Wilson, 6' playmaker; and Greg Viola, 6'5"
forward.
Mummy and Platukis were the high
scorers for the freshmen with a 22 point and 17 point
per game average respectively. Jeff Hock, 6'3", 210
lbs. forward, returns to the squad after sitting out
last season because of a shoulder injury.
The Huskies will participate in two holiday tournaments this year which should benefit their return
to conference action following the vacation period.
B.S.C. is the defending champion in the Highspire
(Pa.) Tournament which will be held December 26
and 27. Aqtion in that tournament will be preceded
this year with participation in the Washington and
Lee Tournament in Viqrinia on December 19 and 20.
