Coach
ROGER

SANDERS

starts

his

initial year at Bloomsburg State following five years as head wrestling coach
at New York University.
During that time, he took a team
which had a dismal three-year record
of 3-36 and transformed the school into
a winner. While at NYU, his record was
50-18-1, which was climaxed by his
team winning the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships. As a result, he was selected 'coach of the year' in the
conference.
Sanders, a native of Fairless Heights, Pennsylvania, graduated from West Chester State College where he was a three-time
Middle Atlantic Champion and NCAA Champion. During his four
years at West Chester, he never lost a dual meet.
After graduating at West Chester, Sanders attended Ball
State University, Muncie, Indiana, on a graduate assistantship
where he taught in the major physical education program and
served as assistant wrestling coach.
In beginning his new challenge, Coach Sanders states, "I am
extremely excited about the opportunity to bring Bloomsburg
State College back into national wrestling prominence."

Outlook
Bloomsburg State College returns to intercollegiate wrestling
competition following no participating during the 1971-72 college
year. A year ago the college found it advisable not to field a team
due to a number of problems resulting from coaching assignments,
and injuries affecting team depth and sufficient participants.
However, th is year there is a new air of confidence for the
wrestling season. New head coach Roger Sanders has four outstanding lettermen returning from the squad of two years ago.
This nucleus, coupled with fine sophomore and freshmen candidates, will hopefully provide the Huskies with a winning season.
A great deal depends on whether the four veterans can stay
healthy.
Leading the returnees is Floyd "Shorty" Hitchcock, a senior
from Wyalusing at 177 lbs., who is one of the most outstanding
wrestlers in the history of the college. Two years ago Hitchcock
was a Pennsylvania Conference champion and also was a NAIA
runner-up. Last year, going into the olympic tryouts in which he
had a strong showing, his record stood at 43-3-1 having won the
eastern AAU champion, the York and Wilkes Tournaments, and
he finished second in the national AAU, where he posted the
fastest fall in nine seconds. Another strong participant at 190 lbs.
is Ron Sheehan, a senior from Upper Darby, who was also a
Pennsylvania champion two years ago. The other senior is Kevin
Hays, a 167 lb. competitor from Randolph, N. J., who was a
strong competitor two years ago. The above three are joined by
Randy Watts, a 142 lb. junior from Turbotville, who was a third
place finisher in PC competition two years ago. These four lettermen will be counted on to score heavily by Coach Sanders
throughout the season.
The remainder of the squad will be comprised of Dave
Marr, a sophomore from Basking Ridge, N. J.; Bob Kocher, a
frosh from Easton; Dan Roberts, a sophomore from Schuylkill
Haven; sophomore Mike Mallozzi, Ambler, and freshman Bill
O'Donnell, Easton, all candidates for the 118 and 126 lb. class
positions. Lonny Edmonds, a junior from Williamsport, and
David Bilger, a freshman from Quakertown, will fight it out for
the 144 lb. class. The 142 lb. division will have junior Dan
Beitler, Allentown, challenging Randy Watts for the position. The
150 and 158 lb. weights wi II be split by Brian Berry, a sophomore
from Hatboro, Joe Drall, a junior from Lancaster and Steve Boyle,
a frosh from Westwood, N. J. The upper weights will be manned
by Dan Burkholder, a sophomore from Denver, Doug Anderson,
a senior from Northumberland, and returning lettermen Hays,
Sheehan, and Hitchcock.
The 1972-73 schedule is a good one. The Huskies participate
in pre-season tournaments at East Stroudsburg and the U.S.
Coast Guard Academy, along with the Wilkes Open Tournament
at Christmas. A new opponent, Springfield College, the perennial
New England Conference champion, will join such top
Pennsylvania Conference teams as Clarion, Slippery Rock, Lock
Haven, East Stroudsburg, and West Chester and several other
much-improved PC opponents.
Bloomsburg will be utilizing the new E.H. Nelson Fieldhouse on the upper campus for all of its home wrestling meets.
