WRESTLING OUTLOOK 1967
The Bloomsburg State College Huskies, according to head coach Russ Houk, should have a good
year, but not as great a year as those of some of his
championshiip teams of the past. The Huskies won
their last official title in the 1964-65 season when
they were National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics champions. Their last Pennsylvania State
College Championship was won in the 1963-64
season.
Twenty three varsity candidates and 17 freshmen have been working out since early October and
were joined two weeks ago by Houk who also serves
as head football coach. The squad includes three
seniors, eight juniors, and twelve sophomores from
last year's freshmen team that posted a 10-5 record.
Lost from last year's squad through graduation
and other reasons are: Frank Neiswender, who placed
third at 167 lbs. in last year's PSCAC competition;
Grant Stevens, who placed second at 115 lbs.; Barry
Sutter, who was last year's 145 lb. PSCAC champion;
Dave Grady, who was third at 160 lbs.; and two
other mainstays, Doug Grady, and Lou Centrella.
The returning seniors include: Joe Gerst, 152 lb.
PSCAC and NAIA champion; Steve Peters, runner
up in PSCAC at 137 lbs; and Bill Moul, who placed
fourth at heavyweight. Participation by Gerst at
this time is questionable due to leg trouble which
sidelined him in football.
Among the outstanding juniors are: Wayne Heim,
a PSCAC third place winner at 123 lbs; Dennis
Seigmann, who had a fourth at 123 lbs. in PSCAC
competition two years ago, but did not wrestle last
year; Kurt Grabfelder at 123 lbs.; and David Jones
at 191 lbs.
Promising sophomores include: Jeffrey Prosseda at
130 lbs; Arnold Thompson at 160-167 lbs; John
Stutzman at 167 lbs; and Bob Janet at heavyweight.
Bloomsburg will conduct an AAU meet on Saturday, December 2 in Centennial Gymnasium.
Invitations have been extended to approximately 40 colleges,
junior colleges, YMCA's and Athletic Clubs.
The
Huskies will officially open their season by hosting
a quadrangular meet with Indiana State U., Miami
of Ohio, and Appalachian State College on December
9.
As in the past the Huskies will be participating
in the annual Rose Bowl of Wrestling-the Wilkes
Open Tournament, in the latter part of December.

RUSSELL E. HOUK, WRESTLING COACH
Russell E. Houk, a rt~ive of Ellwood City and an
outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined
the Bloomsburg State College faculty in September,
1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football
coach, and athletic director. A line performer on
the Lincoln High School gridiron squad at Ellwood
City, he later had an outstanding record in both
football and wrestling at Lock Haven State College,
where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
1952. He received his Master of Education degree
from Bucknell in 1957.
While coaching at both South Williamsport and
Muncy High Schools, .p.e had a very successful tenure; several of his charges captured first and second
places in State championship meets. In the ten
years he has been at the wrestling helm at B.S.C., he
has won five Pennsylvania State College championships, three N.A.I.A. titles and one Wilkes Tournament title. In 1959-60, 1961-62, and 1964-65, the Huskies were undefeated. In 1962, when he had his 13-0
record, he won both the Pennsylvania State College
Conference and the Wilkes Tourney and placed
second in the N.A.I.A. He was named N.A.I.A. Coach
of the Year in 1960-61, 1962-63, and 1964-65. His
overall record at B.S.C. stands at 100 wins, 14 losses,
and 2 ties.
Houk qualified as one of the busiest small college
athletic directors in the country as he also just
completed his fourth year as head football coach at
Bloomsburg, and alsot served as a member of the
U.S. Olympic Wrestlin~ Committee.
As a superb conditioner of men, he instills in all
of his teams the great asset of the desire to win
along with good sportsmanship.

- ------DONALD R. RAE
Assistant Wrestling Coach
In addition to his wrestling assignment, Don Rae,
who joined the B.S.C. faculy in August, 1967, is
also an Instructor in Mathematics.
A native of Harrison, New Jersey, he received his
early education in the ·schools of that state and received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree
from Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma.
From 1950-1954, he served in the United States Air
Force.
For three years prior to coming to Bloomsburg, he
taught in the Window Rock High School on the
Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona, where he was
Chairman of the Ma,thematics Department, Student
Council sponsor, and Assistant Football and Wrestling
coach.
Houk feels that Rae will be a valuable asset
to the B.S.C. wrestling program.
