WRESTLING OUTLOOK
Defending their National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Championship, facing several
strong opponents in the Pennsylvania State College
Athletic Conference, and holding their own against
some outstanding nationally-ranked teams, will provide a real challenge to Russ Houk and the grapplers
of Bloomsburg State College.
Houk, who was
named last season's N.A.I.A. "Coach of the Year",
has directed the Huskies to a winning season in each
of his eight years at Bloomsburg.
Twenty-four varsity candidates and sixteen freshmen have been working out since early October
under the watchful eye of Assistant Coach, Jerry
Maurey, while Houk terminated the football season
as head coach. Just how well Maurey did his job
was evident on November 20th when Bloomsburg
State College won the unofficial team title at the
West Point A.A.U. meet, with the Huskies taking
first in three weights. Houk, who was on hand to
direct the squad, was enthusiastic in his praise for
the work Coach Maurey had done in conditioning the
squad for the tournament.
Returning this year are nine seniors and two
juniors who are being bolstered by twelve sophomores from last year's undefeated freshman team
coached by Maurey. Lost from last year's varsity
squad through graduation are: Ed Taylor, 137 lbs.,
P.S.C.A.C. champ; Bill Paule, 157 lb. P.S.C.A.C.
champ; and Rocco Fortney, 157 lb. P.S.C.A.C.
runner up.
Three outstanding returning seniors are:
Jim
Rolley, who won the P.S.C.A.C. and N.A.I.A. titles
at 130 lbs.; Bill Robb, first in P.S.C.A.C. at 123 lbs.,
and second in N.A.I.A.; Tom Vargo, first in P.S.C.
A.C. and third in N.A.I.A. at 167 lbs. A junior,
Grant Stevens, who wrestled at 115 lbs. and 123 lbs.
is back. Dave DeWire, a junior who placed fourth
in P.S.C.A.C. at heavyweight, is expected to be
greatly improved; Lew Centrella, who joined the
varsity last February, as a first semester sophomore
should have a good year.
The sophomores who moved up to the varsity are:
Keith Taylor, who won the 115 lb. division in last
year's Wilkes open tournament; John Ford, 130 lbs.,
Steve Peters, 137 lbs., who won the plebe tournament
at West Point; Jim Ross, 130 lbs., Barry Sutter,
147 lbs. plebe champ; Joe Gerst, 157 lb. runner-up
in plebe tournament; Bill Moul, 191 lbs.; Bill Herrold, 315 lb. heavyweight.
In addition to a quadrangular meet with Southern
Illinois University, Indiana State University and
Lycoming College, the Wilkes Tournament. the
P.S.C.A.C. meet, the N.A.I.A. and the N.C.A.A
tournaments, the Huskies have nine tough dual
meets Coaches Houk and Maurey, enthused over the
showing at West Point, are anxious to get this
difficult schedule under way.

RUSSELL E. HOUK, WRESTLING COACH
Russell E. Houk, a native of Ellwood City and an
outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined
the Bloomsburg State College faculty in September,
1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football
coach, and athletic director. A line performer on
the Lincoln High School gridiron squad, at Ellwood
City, he \ater had an outstanding record in both
football and wrestling at Lock Haven State College,
where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
1952. He received his Master of Education degree
from Bucknell in 1957.
\Vhile coaching at both South Williamsport and
Muncy High Schools, he had a very successful tenure; several of his charges captured first and second
places in State championship meets. In the eight
years he has been at the wrestling helm at BSC, he
has won five Pennsylvania State College championships, three NAIA titles, and one Wilkes Tournament
title. In 1959-60, 1961-62, and 1964-65, the Huskies
were undefeated. In 1962, when he had his 13-0
record, he won both the Pennsylvania State College
Conference and the Wilkes Tourney and placed
second in the NAIA. He was named NAIA Coach
of the Year in both 1960-61, 1962-63, and 1964-65.
His overall record at BSC stands at 80 wins, 8
losses, and 1 tie.
Houk qualifies as one of the busiest small college
athletic directors in the country as he also just
completed his second year as head football coach at
Bloomsburg.
As a superb conditioner of men, he instills in all of
his teams the great asset of the desire to win along
with good sportsmanship.

GERALD MAUREY-ASSISTANT
WRESTLING COACH
Assistant Wrestling Coach Gerald Maurey is also
an instructor in education and Assistant to the Dean
of Men at Bloomsburg State College. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education
degrees from Pennsylvania State University, he
taught at Roaring Spring High School, Pennsylvania, followed by a five-year tenure as a teacher
and highly successful wrestling coach at Clearfield
High School.
In addition to being an outstanding high school
wrestling coach, Maurey was a stalwart performer
on Penn State's wrestling team. Coach Houk is
extremely happy to have a coach of Maurey's caliber
helping with the wrestling program. Last season
Maurey coached the BSC fr~shmen to an undefeated
s~asc;m,
