WRESTLING OUTLOOK
With the freshman rule in effect at Bloomsburg
State College this year, Coach Russ Houk indicates
he will not have one of his better teams but should
have a good season. The Huskies, who are PSCAC
champions, will have five first string lettermen returning from last year's squad. Lost by graduation
from last year's squad were Jerry Fortney, 115 lbs former State Champion; Joel Melitski, 123 lb. State
Champion, Dave Steumple, 167 lbs. runner up State
Champion, and Dick Scorese, former State and NAIA
Champion.
The five returning veterans are Bill Robb, 130 lbs. finished fourth in NCAA competition; Ed Taylor,
137 lbs. - State Champion and second in N AIA;
Bill Paule, 157 lbs. - two time State Champion; Tom
Vargo, 167 lbs., second in PSCAC finals; Roy Resavage, 177 lbs., who placed third in the State finals.
For the first time in the history of the college,
Coach Houk will be unable to utilize an outstanding
group of freshmen and will have to select the balance
of his varsity squad from last year's jayvees. Some
of the leading contenders are: 115 lbs.-Grant Stevens and Donald Ulrich; 123 lbs.-Robert Gibble,
Fran Decembrino, Reginald Berlin, and Donald
Sholley; 130 lbs.-James Rolley; 147 lbs.-Rocco
Forte, Bob Pierce, and James Campbell; 177 lbs.Jim Lewis; unlimited-Lee Viard.
Coach Houk is well pleased with his new assistant Jerry Maurey, who initiated practice this year
while Houk was still handling his chores as head
football coach. In addition to their rugged schedule
against many top rated opponents, the Huskies will
enter three tournaments-tl1e Wilkes College Open,
the Pennsylvania State College Athletic Conference
championship and the NAIA Championship.
Coach Houk will also probably send any outstanding wrestlers to the NCAA championships at
the University of Wyoming.
Two new opponents, Purdue and the University
of Miami of Ohio, will be engaged this year at the
Quadrangular Meet at Indiana State University.
The Huskies open their schedule with a practice
meet with the Na val Academy at Annapolis on November 21.

RUSSELL E. HOUK, WRESTLING COACH
Russell E. Houk, a native of Ellwood City and an
outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined
the Bloomsburg State College faculty in September,
1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football
coach, and athletic director. A line performer on
the Lincoln High School gridiron squad, at Ellwood
City, he later had an outstanding record in both
football and wrestling at Lock Haven State College,
where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
1952. He received his Master of Education degree
from Bucknell in 1957.
While coaching at both South Williamsport and
Muncy High Schools, he had a very successful tenure; several of his charges captured first and second
places in State championship meets. In the seven
years he has been at the wrestling helm at BSC, he
has won five Pennsylvania State College championships, two NAIA titles, and one Wilkes Tournament
title. In 1960 and 1962, the Huskies were undefeated. In 1962, when he had his 13 0 record, he won
both the Pennsylvania State College Conference
and the Wilkes Tourney and placed second in the
N AIA. He was named N AIA Coach of the Year
in both 1961 and '62.. His overall record at BSC
stands at 67 wins and ~ losses.
Houk qualifies as one of the busiest small college
athletic directors in the country as he also just
completed his first year as head football coach at
Bloomsburg.
As a superb conditioner of men, he instills in all of
his teams the great asset of the desire to win along
with good sportsmanship.

GERALD

MAUREY-ASSISTANT

WRESTLING COACH
Assistant Wrestling Coach ~erald Maurey is also
an instructor in education and Assistant to the Dean
of Men at Bloomsburg State College. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education
degrees from Pennsylvania State University, he
taught at Roaring Spring High School, Pennsylvania, followed by a five-year tenure as a teacher
and highly successful wrestling coach at Clearfield
High School.

In addition to being an outstanding high school
wrestling coach, Maurey was a stalwart performer
on Penn State's wrestling team. Coach Houk is
extremely happy to have a coach of Maurey's caliber
helping with the wrestling program.
