WRESTLING OUTLOOK 1962 - 1963
For the first time in six years at Bloomsburg then
is a good liklihood that no freshman will be a varsity
starter during the year. The reason - 10 returning
lettermen and a large corps of seasoned reserves
from last year's jayvee squad. (The only varsity
starter lost was Don Poust, 177 pound conference
champ, who graduates in January, 1963.)
Approximately 45 men reported for practice in
mid-October, and after several weeks of intensive
practice, 34 remain on the squad.
At the moment, the ten lettermen have the inside
track on starting assignments. Included are: Jerry
Fortney, 115 pounds, who placed second in the conference last March; at 123, Joel Melitski rolled up a
5-1 record last year and was an outstanding replacement for Bill Hughes who was sidelined with injuries
during the first six meets; Bill Hughes has moved up
to the 130 pound division this year; in his 3 years at
Bloomsburg, Hughes has been second only to Lock
Haven's NCAA champ Gray Simons who graduated
last May; Ed Taylor, at 137, placed second in the
state conference meet and fourth in NAIA competition; Dick Scorese, 147 pound bracket, was the
squad's top point-getter last year and took second
in both the state conference and the NAIA meets;
at 157, Bill Paule, was runnerup in the state conference last year; Gene Dixon, rugged 167 pounder,
hopes to regain the state conference and NAIA titles
which he won in his sophomore year; Dave Stuempfle
has moved up to 177 after losing only 1 match in the
157 pound bracket; Bob Hall, who is the strongest
man on the squad, will compete in weight classes
from 167-191; last year, he won both the 191 pound
conference crown and the 167 NAIA title; Bill Garson, at his heaviest weight in four years, will be
defending the title he won for the past two years in
both state conference and N AIA competition.
New opponents on this year's schedule include
some of the outstanding colleges and universities in
the nation. Among these are the University of
Nebraska, University of Wisconsin, Indiana State
(Terre Haute), and the University of Southern
Illinois.
These have been added to perennially
strong opponents such as Lock Haven S. C. and
Waynesburg College.
With a schedule that is nothing less than "rough",
Coach Houk is making no predictions. Some indication of what lies ahead will be revealed on November 24 when the Husky varsity and jayvee squads
journey to Annapolis for a pre-season scrimmage
with the "Middies" of the Naval Academy.

RUSSELL E. HOUK
VARSITY WRESTLING COACH
Russell E. Houk, a native of Ellwood City, and an
outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined the
college faculty in September, 1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football coach, and athletic
director. A stellar performer on the Lincoln High
School gridiron squad at Ellwood City, Houk also
had an outstanding record in both football and
wrestling at Lock Haven S. C. He received his
Bachelor of Science degree at Lock Haven in May,
1952, and the Master of Science degree at Bucknell
University in 1957.
While coaching at both South Williamsport and
Muncy High Schools, he had a very successful
tenure; several of his charges captured first and
second places in State Championship meets.
In
1957-1958, his first year as head wrestling coach at
BSC, Houk compiled a record of five wins and two
losses. The next year, 1958-1959, the Huskies ... won
9 dual meets and lost only 1 - to Lock Haven S. C.
In addition, they took the first place team championship in the annual Teachers College Championship
Tourney. In March, 1960, the Bloomsburg team
completed the 1959-1960 campaign undefeated in 10
outings before going on to their second consecutive
team championship in the Pennsylvania State College
Tournament and first place in the NAIA Tournament
(the first national championship in Bloomsburg's
history.) During the 1958-59 and 1959-60 seasons,
the Huskies amassed a string of 15 consecutive
victories. In 1960-61, their record was 11-1. Last
year, the squad had a dual meet record of 10-1, and
topped the season by winning the Pennsylvania State
College Team Championship and the NAIA team
championship. Coach Houk has an overall record of
45 wins and 5 losses in his five years at Bloomsburg.

LEE JACKSON, STUDENT COACH
A senior from Andalusia, Pennsylvania, Lee participated in 3 years of varsity competition at Bloomsburg under Coach Houk. A hard worker and a
good student, both in academic and sports activities,
he will be a valuable assistant in the freshman and
jayvee programs. Lee plans to continue coaching
when he begins teaching in September, 1963.
