WILLIAM F. FOSTER-HEAD BASKETBALL COACH
Tall, quiet, and likeable, Bill Foster joined the Bloomsburg
faculty in September, 1960 to begin his first assignment as a head
coach in intercollegiate basketball circles. He succeeds Harold
Shelly1 who resigned to accept a post in Wilmington, Ohio.
A 1~48 gr2.dt1.ate of Elizab'=thtown College, Foster made the varsity
in his freshman yc'c1.i~ at a coliege which is rn.~tsd for outstanding court
teams ye~r ,:!fter yearo He was named 0 outstand:tng Athlete" during
his semi.or year, and, in fou:r seascns of inte1"Collegiate compet;ition,
scored over 1100 points, winning 4 letters in basketball and 3 in
soccera
Foster began his high school coaching career at Chichester High,
Booth"-'Y!\,. Pennsylvani&e After three years, he was named head coach at
Abington "·Ugh S~hool,. During the 1959,,60 seasonr his charges canpiled
a 19-2 rec(JJ:'d1 the best in Abingto.11 s history. The squad had only
one player slightly over six feet tall, but went on to win the
Suburban Section One League Championship for the first time in the
school•s historyo
The new Busky mentor also serves as co-director of the Jim
Pollard Basketball Coaches Clinic, and, with l-Iarry Litwack, Temple
University Coach, is a director of the 1'ocono Mountain Basketball
Camp for Boys at Camp <:un Mountain, Shawnee, Pf"nnsylvania.
During the two years of mi1i tary service, he was a member of the
varsity squad at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington, before
going overseas for duty in England.
JOHN SCRIMGFOUR-ASSISTANT BASKE'IBALL COACH
A member of the varsity track squad for several years before
earning his Bachelor's degree at Bloomsburg, Coach Scrimgeour served
nearly four years as a Navy Air Corps pilot. Prior to his coming to
Bloomsburg in'January, 1959 to teach mathenatics and science, he
taught in the Bristol Township School District.

BASKETBALL OUTLOOK 1960.1961
With only five lettermen returning to the varsity court squad,
Bill Foster, new Husky coach, began an intensive practice schedule
on October 17, determined to better last year's record of 7 wins and
10 losses •. In spite of the lack of experience reserve strei:,gth, Coach
Foster feels the squad has good potential and the possibility of a
marked increase in overall efficiency as the season progresses •.
Jack Mascioli and Al Francis, who were graduated in May, were
the only lettermen lost to the aguad. Returning letter winners are
Nonn Shutovich, Phil Houser, and Pete Perialis, seniors, and Dick
Lloyd and Roland Farmer, juniors. Reservists who saw both jayvee
and varsity service last year are Bill Strausser and Len Ludinsq.
juniors, and Barney Gatski and Gary Rupert, sophanores. -Pre-season
practices would lead most obs..,,ers to predict that three or four
of the most promising freshmen will be· pushing upperclassmen for
starting assignments.
Norm ~hutovich, Hazleton senior, will be a leading contender at
either forward or center. In th~ee seasons, Norm has grabbed 773
rebounds, breaking the former record of 594 set by Len K~ick in four
years at Bloomsburg. If he scores 284 points, Norm will also break
the four-year scoring record established by Bill Swisher with 1014 points.
Dick Lloyd, Upper Darby junior, was the leading individual scorer
of the Pems;ylvania State College Conference last year, scoring 399
points in 17 games; he broke the conference'record of 330 set by
Roger Hotz of California. Along the way, he perfonned well enough
to be named All-state second team. He will alternate between front
and back court assignments.
Phil Houser and Pete Perialis will give the Huskies experience
and scoring strength in backcourt work, and Roland Farmer 6• 4" could
be a big asset up front.
An increase in average height should help the Huskies in the
16-game campaign. With the exception of Pete Perialis, 5, 10", the
present varsity squad ranges frail 6• to 6•4" including freshman
Fran Curran, Jim McKinley, and Jerry Doemling.
For several years., there has been a marked improvement in the
caliber of play of all members of the conference. This has resulted
in some tight races and what amounts to a "tough schedule" for
each team.
The Huskies have good scoring and rebound ability. They must
improve their ball handling and general defense to have a winning
season against more experienced squads•.

RUSSELL E. HOUK • HFJill WRESTLING COACH
Russell F. Houk, a native of Ellwood City, and an outstanding coach
of high school grapplers, joined the college faculty in September, 1957,
as head wrestling coach, assistant football coach, and athletic director.
A stellar performer on the Lincoln High School gridiron squad at
Ellwood City, Houk served with both the Merchant Marine and the Army
during World War II. After his discharge, he entered Duke University,
later transferred to Lock Havens. c. He had an outstanding record in
both football and wrestling at Lock Haven, serving as captain during
his senior year. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Lock
Haven in May, 1952.
In three years at South Williamsport High School, he com.piled
an amazing record as head wrestling coach, but his greatest successes
came during three years at Muncy High where his squads won thirtyseven meets and lost on]¥ six. ~everal of his schoolboy wrestlers won
district honors and three of them captured first or second places in the
state championship meets.
He was awarded his Master of Science degree in Education in
1957 at Bucknell University.
In his first year as head wrestling coach at B.s.c., Houk canpiled a
record of five wins and two losses. Two years ago, the Huskies won
9 dual meets and lost only 1 -- to Lock Haven s. c. In additHm, they took
the first-place team championship in the annual Teachers College Championsidt
In March, 1960, the Bloansburg team completed an undefeated season with
10 victories before going on to their second consecutive team championship i!1
Pennsylvania State College Tournament and their first in the N.A.I.A.
Tournament (the first national championship in Bloomsburg 1 s history.) The
Huskies have a»).assed a string of 15 consecutive victories in the past
two seasons.
MICHAEL FLANAGAN - ASSISTANT WRESTLING
COACH
Mike Flanagan, whose mat squads at Bellefonte H. s. piled up a
35-19 record under his astute guidance, joined the Bloomsburg faculty
in January, 1960.
A graduate of Clearfield High school,Flanagan served three years as
a paratrooper in World ·war II, received a B.s. degree from Lock Haven s. c09
and an M. Ed. degree from Pennsylvania State University. He has a
background of ten years of experience as teachert athletic coach, and
recreation supervisor, having served as assistant football, assistant
wrestling, and head track coach at Dubois H. s. and as assistant football
coach at Curwensville H. s. before goingto Bellefonte.
Hardworking, quiet, and affable, Mike did an excellent job as
assistant football coach this fall, and will have plenty of work to do
when the track and field season opens in the spring.
Sports Publicity Office
v,7RE$TLI:1,G OUTLOOK
Five outstanding perfonners of last year's championship squad
were lost to the team this year as a result of either graduation or
heavy academic schedules. The loss of Bobby Rohm, Stan Elinski, and
Dick Rimple, via the graduation route, did not cause any joy in the
Husky camp. But, with five returning veterans, who won titles or
placed in either the Conference Championships and/or the N.A.I.A.
Tourney, with some good prospects from last year's jayvee squad, and with
one or two freshmen, Coach Houk lost no time in welding together another
formidable aggregation.
During the past two years., the Huskies have won 19 of 20 dual meets,
two P.s.c.c. team championships and one N.A.I.A. team championship.
Following a policy inaugurated four years ago, Coach Houk has scheduled
meets with some of the best small college teams in the nation. In
addition to repeat meetings with non-conference powers like Rochester
Institute of Technology (New York) and Waynesburg College (Pennsylvania).,
the Huskies will come to grips with Appalachian .~tate (North Carolina),
Mankato State (Minnesota), Winona State (Minnesota), and Wisconsin
State (Wisconsin)• Conference rivalries will continue with strong
teams from Lock Haven., West Chester, Millersville., Shippensburg, and
East Stroudsburg ~tate Colleges.
This year's varsity squad includes only one senior - Walter Fake and one junior - Tom Gorant. One might correctly assume., therefore.,
that the bulk of the varsity contenders will be sophomores with one
or two freshmen moving up to starting berths as the season progresses.
The squad apparently possesses the same drive and desire but lacks
the experience of last year•s group. Coach Houk feels that the team
will grow stronger with each succeeding meet.
Last year•s record of 10 wins and no losses cannot be exceeded,
but the string of 15 consecutive victories of the past two seasons can
be lengthened.

ROBERT ZEIGLER -• HFAD SWIMMING COACH
A graduate of West Chester State College, Bob Zeigler came to Bloomsburg
in September, 1960 as trainer for the Husky football tea~; his skill, enthusiasm, and effort played a large part in the success enjoyed by the
gridders. This is his first year as coach of the swimming team.
In addition to directing the efforts of the Bloomsburg swirmning team,
Bob is faculty director of the men's intramural athletic program.
Folloi:-ii.ng his graduation from New Cumberland High :: 0 hool, Bob served
four years with the United States Navy. He was a member of the faculty
of Susquehannock High School (Glen Rock) before coming to Bloomsburg.
While an undergraduate student at West Chester, Zeigler played baseball
two years, served as football trainer for the Rams, and was student director
of Intramural Activities.
1HQ''1AS LITTLE - STUDENT COACH
A transfer fran La Salle College, Little will again use his skill
and experience to help develop the STdimming program at Bloomsburg. Tom
gained valuable coaching experience while serving as a United States Marine
Corps "judo" instructor - an activity in which he maintains a very active
interest.
OUTLOOK
This is the second year in which swimming is scheduled as a varsity
intercollegiate sport at Bloomsburg. Although the team posted no victories
last year, they were handicapped by lack of experience and depth, but
showed steady improvement throughout the season.
This yeart s squad is young - - mostly freshmen and sophcmores. A
hardworking group, they have been tnaining for nearly a month under the
supervision of student coach Tom Little. This season will continue
to be part of a long-range building program; if enthusiasm is a major
factor in winning, the Husky squad should break into the win column more than
once.
Swimming is ga1m.ng a solid foothold at Bloomsburg, and the team
expects to be able to enter several contestants in the State College Swimming
Championship.
