Head Coach
Roger Sanders
Winning wrestling teams have become a tradition at Bloomsburg University and Coach
Roger B. Sanders has been responsible for building an outstanding program. Sanders is in
his twelfth year as head coach and has compiled an impressive 122-51-3 record .
During his tenure, Sanders has led B.U. to three first places and two seconds in the
Pennsylvania Conference Championships in the last five years and the Eastern Wrestling
League Championship in 1980-81 . His teams have consistantly been in the top three in the
EWL since its beginning. In his years at the helm, Sanders has coached three National
Champions and numerous All Americans. His most recent grappler to gain All American
honors was Don Reese, who was the 134 lb . runnerup at the NCAA Division I National
Championships in 1982.
Sanders is a very positive individual who brings a winning philosophy to both wrestling
and life. The philosophy of discipline, dedication , intensity and goal setting seem to
represent the program. Sanders states , "It is our hope that these young men learn and take
these characteristics with them as they pursue their personal goals."
A native of Fairless Hills, PA, Sanders was named as BU 's Director of Athletics in July
of 1982, giving him the additional responsibilities of overseeing Bloomsburg's 18 varsity
athletic programs. His major goal will be fund raising for the purpose of maintaining
strong programs in the NCAA Divisions I and II.
Sanders graduated from West Chester University where he won three Middle Atlantic
University Division Championships and a NCAA College Division Championship.
Sanders has the distinguished accomplishment of never losing a dual meet in either high
school or college. Before coming to Bloomsburg, he served as a head coach at New York
University where he had a five year record of 50-18-1 .
In addition to his responsibilities as BU's Athletic Director and head wrestling coach,
Sanders serves as clinician at many of the outstanding wrestling clinics and camps
throughout the United States. He has just completed his ninth successful year of directing
the Husky Wrestling School at BU.

Head Coach , Roger Sanders.

Assistant Coach
Carl Poff
Poff begins his second year as an assistant coach for Bloomsburg University after
serving as an assistant at the University of North Carolina for three years. As assistant at
UNC, he aided the Tarheels in becoming a national power and helped many individuals
gain national honors. A year ago , the team reached the lofty goal of fifth in the country and
in Poff's final year at the school , five wrestlers gained All American honors and one was
crowned national champion . In a somewhat unique situation, North Carolina's C .D. Mock ,
a former teammate of Poff's at the high school level, defeated Bloomsburg's Don Reese, a
former teammate of Poff's at the collegiate level , in the NCAA's 134 lb. final while he was at
UNC.
A 1979 graduate of Bloomsburg , Poff wrestled four years for the Huskies compiling an
88-37-2 overall mark . He was team captain for three consecutive years and was a third
place finisher in the Eastern Wrestling League championships during his senior year. In
addition, the Newtown, PA native compiled a 33-9 record in his final campaign and placed
third in the Pennsylvan ia Conference championships .
His main responsibilities are in the area of recruiting and , in addition, he works with the
Bloomsburg wrestlers in the room on the technical aspects of the sport.

1983-84 Season Outlook
Bloomsburg University head wrestling coach Roger Sanders knows his Huskies are
going to be good, but just how good remains to be seen. "There is more talent here than at
any one time before, but there's also a good possibility of five or more freshmen being in
the lineup at one time ," he commented.
Twenty freshmen are currently listed on the 37-member 1983-84 roster, but the
credentials they have established are the basis for Sanders' "optimism" along with the fact
that several veterans are proven winners. According to the Amateur Wrestling News,
Bloomsburg had the 11th best recruiting year among NCAA Division I schools .
"The attitude of the entire squad is exceptional right now, and a lot of that is based on
the great leadership the upperclassmen are providing," Sanders stated. "Being as young
as we are, that leadership is vital to our success this season, " he added.
The largest questions loom in the lower weights as well as the heavyweight class,
where a lack of varsity experience will be evident when the Huskies embark on another
challenging slate which includes 18 dual matches and five tournaments . The season
culminates with the NCAA Division I Championships in the Meadowlands Arena,
Hackensack, NJ, on March 8-10, 1984.
Sophomore Rob Rapsey appears to be the early leader for a starting berth at 118 lbs. A
year ago, he saw very limited action behind standout Todd Cummings, who was a national
tournament participant. A 1981 PIAA state champion, Rick Bonomo, becomes eligible
after the first semester and will challenge for the starting role at that time .
One of the Huskies' tri-captains, Glenn Walter, is the top candidate at 126 lbs. The
senior has been in and out of the BU lineup for the past two years and gained valuable mat
time behind since-graduated Woody Fry. Newcomer Mark Gumble, will press Walter in the
early going, and Rock Bonomo, Rick's twin brother and another 1981 PIAA state titlist, will
be available for duty in the second semester.
Local product Nelson Fritz returns at 134 lbs. where he posted a fine 18-6-0 mark and
was a runnerup to Clarion 's Mark Ciccarello in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships . Battling with Fritz is Jon Moser, a transfer from West Chester where he captured
back-to-back East Coast Conference crowns and made consecutive appearances in the
national tourney while earning 35 victories against just seven losses.
Another transfer student appears headed for the top spot at 142 lbs. where competition
has been limited somewhat due to the loss of Jeff Gray, who is sidelined again this season
with a hand injury . Dan Comfort, who has joined the squad this season after spending two
years at Temple University, should be in a real battle with returning veteran Keith Youtz,
who was 8-8-0 last season .
Senior Tom Fiorvanti redshirted a year ago but returns to compete in the 150 lb. weight
class . Two years ago he won both the Eastern Wrestling League and the Pennsylvania
Conference titles at this weight and represented BU in the Division I tourney . Freshman
Roger Leitzel will be available for duty when needed.
Veteran Greg Sullivan is back at 158 lbs. but will be hard pressed by two freshmen for
the right to represent Bloomsburg at that weight. Mike Rudolph and Dan Klingerman , both
former PIAA champions, have been impressive during the pre-season workouts and will
be heard from before the season 's over.
" A great amount of flexibility" will prevail in the next four weights where Sanders
enjoys the option of having several championship calibre veterans in the lineup as well as
newcomers who should allow the team to maintain its reputation for outstanding
performers in the upper weights .
4

Prior to the return ot national qualifier Tom Gibble, in the second semester, newcomer
Darrin Evans will most likely be the starter at 167 lbs. A year ago, Gibble ran up a 21-10-0
record and was second in the EWL earning him a trip to Oklahoma City and the national
tourney a second time.
Gibbie's brother Steve, a transfer from the University of North Carolina, also becomes
eligible following the opening semester and will face a stern test for starting rights in the
person of two-time PIAA champion Bruce Wallace . The freshman is considered Sanders'
top recruit for the upcoming campaign and, with experience and maturity, could be one of
BU's finest wrestlers to come along in years.
The other BU performer to record 20+ wins in 1982-83, junior John McFadden, is the
Huskies' 190 lber. again this year after going 25-10-1 last season. After turning in his
shoulder pads at the close of the Huskies' football campaign, freshman Mark Williams will
provide McFadden's main competition .
The departure of Pennsylvania Conference champion and EWL runnerup, Joe Wade,
leaves Sanders with a huge void to fill at heavyweight. A senior and two freshmen are
locked up in a brawl to replace the talented Wade.
Mike Kruczek, who has been waiting in the wings for the past few years, is the only
performer with any collegiate experience. The 300 lb. senior was 4-6-0 last season. First
year wrestlers Ron lppolite and Chris Tamborra bring good credentials with them,
previously winning state crowns in New Jersey and Connecticut respectively. According
to Sanders, "All three will see action before this year's over."
Bloomsburg suffered through a tough 6-7 dual match campaign in 1982-83 and fifth in
the EWL but registered a second-place showing in the PC tourney and appears ready to
regroup and return to the winning ways, which saw the Huskies compile nine straight
winning seasons prior to a year ago.

Bloomsburg , discipline and dedication will be the determining factors for Ricky's success .
He will be the leading candidate to start at 118 lbs. A freshman from Hunlock Creek, he is
majoring in art.

ROB RAPSEY
Should be in the starting lineup early in the season . A technically sound wrestler who has
not yet had the opportunity to prove himself. Wrestled behind Todd Cummings last year

calibre. Rob is an elementary education major from Camp Hill , PA.

Clarion. Looking for Nelson to have an exceptional year seeing action at both 134 and 142
lbs. Nelson is an elementary education major from Benton, PA.

JON MOSER
A junior transfer from West Chester University is a very welcome addition to the Husky
Lineup. Jon is a two time East Coast Conference champion and a two time NCAA

Huskies In The EWL
Bloomsburg has enjoyed much success in the Eastern Wrestling League both teamwise and individually in the past eight years. The Huskies won the team championship in
1981, and have never placed lower than fifth . Roger Sand.ers' squads have placed second
four times, third once, and fifth twice .
The team can boast second place on the Tournament Place Winners list (first through
fourth places) with a total of 56, second only to Penn State's 62 .
Individually the Huskies have had 14 tourney champs. They are: Chris Poff (1977) ,
Dom DiGioacchino (1978, 79, 80), Don Reese (1979 , 80 , 81 , 82) , Tony Caravella (1980),
Todd Cummings (1981), Ed Fiorvanti (1981), Tom Fiorvanti (1981), Al McCollum (1982),
and Joe Wade (1982).
Reese was named as the EWL's outstanding wrestler in 1982, and DiGioacchino
copped that honor in 1980.
The three fastest tournament falls are also held by former Bloomsburg wrestlers .
Heavyweight Mel Sharp holds the record with a fall at 0:18 in 1979, while Al McCollum
recorded a fall at 0:36 in 1981 and Leszek Radon pinned an opponent in 0:39 in 1977 .

Huskies In The PC
The Huskies have been crowned champions of the Pennsylvania Conference eight
times in the Conference's 40 year history and rank third on the list of championships won
behind Lock Haven (15) and Clarion (9). In the past eight years, no team other than
Bloomsburg or Clarion has won the team title .
Bloomsburg 's first team title came in 1959, under the direction of Russ Houk. Houk
then directed the Huskies to four more conference titles in the next five years.
Under current coach Roger Sanders, Bloomsburg has never finished lower than sixth
in the tourney, and copped championships in 1979, 1980, and 1982.
Bloomsburg did not have an individual champion until 1957, when Jim Garman began
his string of three straight conference titles. Other three-time champs include: William
Garson (1961-63), Andy Capelli (1977-79), and Tony Caravella (1978-80).

Two Of Bloomsburg's Finest

• • •

Floyd "Shorty" Hitchcock
Perhaps the greatest wrestler ever to represent the outstanding
wrestling tradition at Bloomsburg University was Floyd "Shorty"
Hitchcock.
Hitchcock began his collegiate wrestling career at Bloomsburg
during the fall semester of 1969 under the direction of head coach
Russell E. Houk. As a freshman, wrestling at 177 lbs., he posted a
10-4 record, finishing third in both the Pennsylvania Conference
and the NAIA tourney. After finishing 19-1 during his sophomore
year, winning the PC crown at 190 lbs. and placing second in the
annual NAIA Championships, Hitchcock went undefeated (21-0)
during his junior year of 1972-73. During that year Hitchcock won
his second consecutive PC title at 190 lbs.
Prior to his final year of eligibility as a Husky grappler, Shorty represented Bloomsburg
at the World Un iversity Games in Moscow where he won a silver medal. During his senior
year he compiled a 34-2-2 record topping his career off by winning both the NCAA
Division I and Division II titles at 177 lbs. He was also named Outstanding Wrestler in both
NCAA tournaments.
Shorty is currently the head wrestling coach at Springford (PA) High School.

Don Reese
A recent graduate of Bloomsburg, Reese met with instant
success when he began his wrestling career at Bloomsburg as a
freshman, and his success continued throughout his four years as
a Husky wrestler.
As a freshman Reese was 32-9 at 126 lbs. for Bloomsburg,
finishing first in the EWL championships and second in the PC
championships. During his sophomore season, when he compiled
a 29-9 record, Reese duplicated his tournament finishes, placing
first in the EWL and second in the PC.
As a junior Reese switched to the 134 lb. weight class and had a
34-2-2 record, winning the EWL title for the third consecutive year
and finishing third in the PC tourney. During his final campaign
Reese was 32-2-2, winning both the EWL and PC championships at
134 lbs. Reese topped off his senior year by finishing second to C.D . Mock of North
Carolina at the NCAA Division I championships in March. He was also named the EWL
"Wrestler of the Year" for his performance in his final year.
Reese finished his career with 126 wins; the most recorded by any Bloomsburg
wrestler. He won an unprecedented four straight EWL championships, and holds
numerous Husky wrestling records.
He is currently the assistant coach at Lower Dauphin (PA) High School.
