marked the establishment of the Bloomsburg Academy by
C.P. Waller. The "classical school" located at Third and Jefferson
Streets was established to teach the theories of academic achievement to its classes. While the Academy was striving to achieve
academic excellence, Louis Daguerre revealed the photographic process to a young, ambitious American in Paris. Memories of families,
friends, events, as well as memories experienced at the Academy
would now be preserved not only in hearts, but on fllm. 1856 saw
Bloomsburg townspeople join together to secure a charter of incorporation. The Academy was reorganized and named the Bloomsburg Literary Institute. In the meantime, John Brown's abolitionists began their fight against slavery in Kansas. 1869 was the
year that the Institute was recognized as the Bloomsburg Literary
Institute and State Normal School for the Sixth District. It also
marked the opening of Institute Hall, now Carver Hall. Meanwhile, a

New Strides In The 20th
Century
1916

was a year of great strides. It saw the Literary Institute
purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for $10,000 and
renamed the Bloomsburg State Normal School. On campus student
accomodations were expanded: lockers for visiting athletic teams
were hung In the gymnasium; wash and iron rooms were Installed
In the girls* dorms; and bathroom facilities were added. However, to
cover the expense of these additional "luxuries," student boarding
fees were Increased by 50 cents a week. During the year, the
graduating class decided to create a book which would be "... a
collection of passing remarks said by the way ..." loosely translated into Latin, Dictum Obiter. Thus the Obiter was bom.
In other parts of the world, Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm was advancing on bordering nations,- shortening the number of peaceful
days remaining for the U.S. As America strengthened her forces in
anticipation of fighting in WWI, the Normal School also strengthened her facilities.

new horizons, of aviation. He completed the first non-stop flight

Bloomsburg Goes To

NCAA Tourney
The Husky men's basketball team, while not
having that perfect regular
season record like the
women, entered the NCAA
Division II Tournament
with a 26-4 record.
The team, defeated by
Millersville in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships, hoped to defeat
Philadelphia Textile in
their first game of the
championship.
Leading club scorer Bill
Connelly averaged 17.3
points per game. Sophomore Craig Phillips aver-

aged about 13.5 p.p.g.
Connelly was the top free
thrower and tops in the assist category. The Huskies
other three starters, Jim
Higgins, Alex Nelcha, and
Dave Carpenter also average over 8 points a game.
The team's strong defense helped to establish a
new school record for victories in a season limiting
their opponents to Just
67.7 p.p.g. and 42.1 percent from the field. They
also out-rebounded their
opposition by an average

11-0 mark, the Huskies'
women's basketball team
was ranked by the NCAA

time. They were placed
fourth behind Cal-Poly Pomona, West Texas State
and North Dakota State.
It was an indication of
things to come.

By Spring Break,

March, the Huskies were
undefeated and the top
ranked team. They won
the Eastern Division of the
Conference with a 12-0
mark and at that time had
a team mark of 26-0. They
hosted the Pennsylvania
Conference the weekend
previous to break.
Over Spring break, while
the rest of us headed for
the beaches, the women's

team advanced

to the
quarterfinals by downing
Pace (63-61) and Lock Haven (64-58) to capture the

Eastern Regional title. The
number one spot, however, was not to be Bloomsburg's.

The team ended

the season placing in the
top ten, but not the winner.

During the season, senTheresa Lorenzi scored
her 2,000th career point.
The team had starters
Elaine Wolf, Becky Pigga

outscored their opponents

there is a special occasion.
Lifelong friendships frequently emerge from these

benefits that someone who

Computers
Wave of Our Future
Ever not able to find a printer on this campus or for that
matter an available computer?
What dorm room can't be
passed without seeing someone with a computer?
Whether it is an IBM, Apple,
Macintosh, AT&T or Zenith,
there never seemed to be
enough of them. The computer
age had hit BU. Some people
solved the problem of not being able to find a computer by
bringing a computer from
home, and then of course, the

most students, serves as a socopy machine place and the
place we go when we need one more article for that
paper that was due yesterday.
However, after many years as our library, there is a
growing chance that Andruss may become something
else. Plans have been put in motion to begin building a
new library on campus. A larger structure with more
room for students to study and more books is the plan
by administrators, students, and alumni who are participating in raising money for the new project. Ancial center,

from expanding in its present form.
The University hopes to see ground breaking for the
new library within the next year.

Andruss Library presently offers
a great deal of services to students Including copy machines,
music, thousands of books, magazines, microfilm, and microfiche. The Reserve Desk, Readers' Services and Periodicals'
staff provide helpful advice and
services to any student and are
