the College of Ails and Sciences.

"Under the old program, journalism
classes were scattered over two
departments, English and Communication Studies." said

classes are no longer part of the English Department. Instead, a journalism
sequence is being offered under the
new Mass Communication DepartHarris,

years. One of the proponents of the
change was Dr. Walter M. Brasch. "I

Department knew what to do with the
journalism classes," Brasch said. "Nor

convinced that they cared that

much. The result was that our students
were receiving a very mediocre education in journalism. We had to do
something to preserve the integrity of a
major program."

"Good

Bloom

television viewers in

Bloomsburg and

surrounding areas throughout the 1986-87

academic

year.

Bloom News, a half hour newscast
produced by the mass communication
students, aired live over the local cable

channel on Friday evenings.

Bloom News began m the fall of 1986 as a
class project for Dr.

Dana

Ulloth's

Broad-

cast Journalism class. Students gathered

news from the BU campus, the town

of

Bloomsburg, and the surrounding areas.
Responsibilities aside from collecting
news included, editing stories, typing,
preparing the television studio in McCormick, and operating cameras, lights, and
the audio board during the broadcast.
In the spring Bloom News continued

under the guidance of Mr. William Aciemo.
Senior mass communication students Kerry
Desmond and Steve Firmstone handled the
roles of co-producers and directors, making sure each show ran as smoothly as
possible.

By years end. Bloom News became a
recognizable name and newscast, offering
valuable experience for everyone involved.
