Bloomsburg State College, one of the 14 Commonwealth-owned colleges and university, began as an
Academy in 1839 "to teach youth the elements of a classical education." In 1856 it was chartered as the

The school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1916, and in 1920 teacher education became the sole institutional purpose. The name was changed to Bloomsburg State Teachers College in
1927, and authority was granted to offer the degree, Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1960 the institution
became Bloomsburg State College, with authorization to grant the degree, Bachelor of Arts, for liberal arts
programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. That same year graduate study was authorized.
The college currently offers 62 baccalaureate and one associate degree programs in the Arts and Scieences, Business, and Professional Studies. Teacher certification is available in 20 undergraduate program
