BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE

Bloomsburg State College, one of the 14 Commonwealth-owned colleges and university, began as an Academy in 1839 "to teach youth the elements of a classical '3ducation_;;
In 1856 it was chartered as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute, and in 1869 it became a State
Normal School.
The school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1916, and in 1920
teacher education became the sole institutional purpose. The name was changed to Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1927, and authority was granted to offer the degree, Bachelor
of Science in Education. In 1960 the institution became Bloomsburg State College, with
authorization to grant the degree, Bachelor of Arts, for liberal arts programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. That same year graduate study was authorized.
The college currently offers 62 baccalaureate degree programs in the Arts and Sciences,
Business, and Professional Studies. Teacher certification is available in 20 undergraduate
program areas. At the graduate level the college has 31 masters degree programs and five
teacher education certification programs. Through the School of Extended Programs, the
college extends educational opportunities to people of all ages who wish to pursue knowledge
for professional advancement or for their own enrichment.
Today, 785 young people are receiving baccalaureate degrees; 61 are receiving masters
degrees.
Dr. Sylvia Hart

Dr. Sylvia Hart, Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received her bachelor's degree
in nursing at Alverno College in Milwaukee, her Master's degree at Catholic University in
Washington, D.C., and her doctoral degree at New York University. Prior to her appointment
at the University of Tennessee, she served as Associate Professor and Associate Dean of
Nursing at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she was a colleague of Dr.
Gertrude Flynn, Chairperson of BSC's Department of Nursing.
Professor Hart's professional affiliations include membership in the American Nurses
Association, the National League for Nursing, and the New York Academy of Science. She
is Chairperson of the Southern Regional Education Board Nursing Council, Vice Chairperson
of the National League for Nurses Council of Baccalaureate and High Degree Programs,
Chairperson of the Tennessee Nurses Association Council on Education, and an editorial
board member for the publication Nursing Leadership.
In recognition of her many contributions to the nursing profession, Dr. Hart has received
several honors and awards including induction into Sigma Theta Tau, the national honor
society for nurses, Phi Kappa Phi, national honor society for scholarship, Who's Who of
American Women, World's Who's Who of Women, Dictionary of International Biographies
and Personalities of the South. In addition, Dr. Hart has been extremely active in publishing
and has presented papers at regional and national conferences. She has served as consultant
in several curriculum reviews and has been an accreditation visitor for the National League
for Nursing. She has truly distinguished herself as a nurse, an educator, and an administrator.
