ALMA MATER
Bloomsburg State
We proudly sing to thee
Of glories and of honors
That have framed thy majesty;
Though we'll depart
Not one will hesitate
To pledge his lifelong loyalty
To Bloomsburg State!
Bloomsburg State,
Stand proud against thy foes,
Let victory they colors see
While honor be thy goal;
Maroon and Gold
Let none thy fame berate,
As forward on to victQry
Goes Bloomsburg State!

BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE
Bloomsburg State College, onE:: of the 14 Commonwealth-owned colleges and university, began as an Academy in 1839 "to teach youth the elements of a classical education."
In 1856 it was chartered as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute, and in 1869 it became a State
Normal School.
The school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1916, and in 1920
teacher education became the sole institutional purpose. The name was changed to Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1927, and authority was granted to offer the degree, Bachelor
of Science in Education. In 1960 the institution became Bloomsburg State College, with
authorization to grant the degree, Bachelor of Arts, for liberal arts programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. That same year graduate study was authorized.
The college currently offers 62 baccalaureate degree programs in the Arts and Sciences,
Business, and Professional Studies. Teacher certification is available in 20 undergraduate
program areas. At the graduate level the college has 31 masters degree programs and five
teacher education certification programs. Through the School of Extended Programs, the
college extends educational opportunities to people of all ages who wish to pursue knowledge
for professional advancement or for their own enrichment.
Today 230 young people are receiving baccalaureate degrees; 54 are receiving masters
degrees.
DR. C. STUARTEDWARDS
Dr. C. Stuart Edwards joined the BSC faculty in 1958 as the first director of admissions
and placement. Four years later he relinquished his placement responsibilities to become
director of secondary education, along with his admissions duties. He served in the dual
position until 1965 when a director of admissions was appointed. In 1970, Dr. Edwards became the first Dean of the School of Professional Studies, which includes the programs
in nursing and medical technology, as well as all teacher education programs, except business education.
A native of Edwardsville, Pa., Dr. Edwards completed his undergraduate work in secondary education at Bloomsburg State College. He was awarded the Master of Education
and the Doctor of Education degrees at the Pennsylvania State University. For several
years he taught in private schools in Florida and Maryland before accepting a position as
teacher and basketball coach at Kane, Pa. high school. In 1949 Kane won the Class "B" State
Basketball Championship. Before coming to Bloomsburg he served as Assistant High School
Principal at Coatesville, Pa. and later as Principal of the senior high school at Ridgway, Pa.
Along with other activities, Dr. Edwards is President of the Board of Directors,
Bloomsburg Public Library; a member of the Board of Directors of the BSC Alumni Association; member and former Director of the Bloomsburg Kiwanis Club; and a member of Phi
Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi, both honorary education fraternities.
