HISTORY OF BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE

Academy, Uterary Institute, State Normal School, state Teachens College,
and state College - such h•ais been the development of Bloomsburg sincf'
its inception as ,an Academy in 1839. A charter provd w,as begun .in 1927 when authoriilty to confer ,t he Bac,helor of Sclience degree
in Educ,atio:n was granted. By an Acit of the General Ai.ssembly dn January,
1960, the fourteen StaJte Teachers Co1leges of Pennsylvania became Sbate
Colleges. Authorization to of,fer courses leading to ,the MaJSter of Elducaibion
degree w,as given by the Sta.te Council of Educaroion in ·the same year. In
the Spring of '1962, the college was granted awrov,a l iby the :Staite Council of
Eduorution •to offer courses leading :to the Baclle1or of Arts degree in the
Natural Sciences, ·t he Social Sciences, and the Humantties, lbe~inning September, 1962. The first students enrolled in thiiis program ibegan their
studies dn September, 1963.

The ac•ademic costumes worn by member,s of ibhe faculity have a special significa,nce. The inside collar o:f the hood dndioaltes ithe colors of the college
or uruiversiity which awarded the deg,r ee. The color of the outside rim of
the hood symbolizes one of the following departmenlbs of le-arndng:
