HISTORY OF BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE

Ac•a demy, Literary Institute, .State Normal School, State Teachers College,
and State College-such has been the developmeint of Bloomsburg stnce its
incepbion 8IS ,an Ac•a demy in 1800. A charter providing ifor ,the !Bloomsburg
Litevary Institute was drawn up in 1856. Recognized as •a State Normal
School on Fe:b ruary 19, 1869, Bloomsburg rernained ,a private !Lnsititution
until (Miay, 1916 when 'iit was purchtas·e d by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvama. The itransition from Normal School to Staite Teachers College was
begun in 1927 when •a uthority to confer the Bachelor of Science degree in
Education was granted. By a:n Act of the Generial Assembly in J,a nuary,
1960, the fourteen Staite Teachers Colleges of iPennsylv,a nia became Staite
Colleges. Auithoriza;tioo ,to offer courses leading to the Mlasite,r of Educa,W.on
degree was given by the State Council of Education in ,t he same year. In
the &Pring ru 1962, the college was ,g,r anted ,approvial by the Staite Council
of Educ•a tion ,t o offeQ· courises leading to the Bachelor of Arts degr,ee ~n the
Naitu:ral Sciences, the Social Sciences, ,and ·t he Humrunities, •beginning Se,p,tember, 1962. The fi.rst students enrolled in tMs prog,11am !began their studies
in September, [963.
