HISTORY OF BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE
Academy, Literary Institute, State Normal School, State Teachers College,
and State College - such has been the development of the Bloomsburg state
College since its inception in 1839. A charter for the Bloomsburg Literary
Institute was drawn up ,i n 1856. Recognized as a State Normal School on
February 19, 1869, it remained a private institution untiil May 22, 1916, when
it was purchased by the Commonwea}th of Pennsylvania. The transition
to state Teachers College was begun in 1927 when authority to confer the
Bachelor of Science degree in Education was granted. By an Act of the
General Assembly in January, 1960, the fourteen State Teachers Colleges of
Pennsylvania became State Colleges. Courses leading to the Master of
Education degree were authorized by the ,s tate Council of Education in the
same year. The college was granted approval by the State Council of
Education to offer courses leacl.dng to the \Bachelor of Arts degree in the
Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences, and the Humanities, beginning
September, 1963.
THE ACADEMIC COSTUIME
The academic costumes worn by members of the faculty have a special
significance. The inside collar of the hood indicates the colors of the college
or university which awarded the degree. The color of the outside rim of
the hood symbol'izes one of the following departments of learning:
Arts, Letters, Humanities - White
Bus,iness - Drab
Economics - Copper
Education - Light Blue
Fine Arts - Brown
Library Science - !Lemon
Music - ,P ink
Philosophy - !Blue
Physical Education - Sage Green
Science - Gold Yellow
Social Science - Citron
Theology or Divinity - Scarlet
