ALMA MATER
Far above the river winding
Midst the mountains grand,
Stands our College, dear to students
Far throughout the land.
Far and wide though we may wander,
Still our hearts are true;
To our hilltop Alma Mater
We our pledge renew.

Ever seaward Susquehanna
Never resting flows;
Ever upward, striving, climbing
Onward Bloomsburg goes.
Chorus
Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg
College
Up on College Hill;
Years to come shall find us ever
True to Bloomsburg still.

Words-Joseph H. Dennis

Air-"Annie Lyle"

History of Bloomsburg State College
Academy, Literary Institute, State Normal School, State Teachers College,
and State College - such has been the development of the Bloomsburg State
College since its inception as an Academy in 1839. A charter providing for
the Bloomsburg Literary Institute was drawn up in 1856. The school was
recognized as a State Normal School on February 19, 1869, but remained a
private institution until May 22, 1916, when it was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The transition from Normal School to State Teachers
College was completed in 1927, when permission was granted to offer a four
year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
By an Act of the General Assembly in January, 1960, the fourteen State
Teachers Colleges of Pennsylvania became State Colleges. Authorization to
offer courses leading to the Master of Education degree was given by the State
Council of Education in the same year. The Master of Education degree was
awarded on May 26, 1963, for the first time in the history of the college.
In
the Spring of 1962, the college was granted approval by the State Council
of Education to offer courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in the
Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences, and the Humanities, beginning September, 1962. The first students enrolled in this program began their studies
in September, 1963.

The Academic Costume
The academic costumes worn by members of the faculty have a special significance. The inside collar of the hood indicates the colors of the college or
university which awarded the degree. The color of the outside rim of the
hood symbolizes one of the following departments of learning:
Arts, Letters, Humanities - White
Business - Drab
Economics - Copper
Education - Light Blue
Fine Arts - Brown
Library Science - Lemon

Music - Pink
Philosophy - Blue
Physical Education - Sage Green
Science - Gold Yellow
Social Science - Citron
Theology or Divinity - Scarlet
