1993
1993 Season Outlook
The Bloomsburg University field hockey team returns seven
starters from last year's NCAA Division II runner-up squad and appear
poised to make a run for the title again this year. However, much of the
remaining team is young and head coach Jan Hutchinson does not
expect the team to fully mature until playoff time.
Defense will be the strong point of this year's team as the Huskies
return nearly all starters and reserves from last season's defensive unit.
Bloomsburg allowed only 13 goals in 19 games last season, leading to
11 shutout victories. Seniors Gretchen Adams and Nicole Schiavello
and sophomores Shirley Powell and Jen Hitzler will provide much of
the defensive pressure. Junior goalie Lori Hippensteel, a second-team
All-American in 1992, will be counted on again to protect the nets for
Bloomsburg. Hippensteel shared goalkeeping duties last season with
Anita Stum but started and played the majority of the time in the
conference and national playoffs. She gave up only five goals in 19
games last year while turning away 70 shots. Hippensteel's goal
against average was an impressive 0.37 in 1992 and only 0.17 in 12
contests in 1991.
Offensively, the Huskies lost their all-time leading scorer and
two-time All-American in Denise Miller. However, Jan Hutchinson's
squad is returning six of the top seven scorers from last year in Kim
Mack (six goals), Chris Fink (five goals), Michelle Mcfalls (five
goals), Shelley Miller (three goals), Chris Basalyga (three goals) and
Chris Walton (two goals). Those six players also combined for 13
assists in 1992. Shelley Miller was a first-team All-American selection
from her center link position last year and will be expected to increase
her goal production for Bloomsburg. The Huskies' transition game
should also be solid as junior Kerrie Schoenberg and sophomores
Basalyga and Kim Snader return at the link positions after starting for
Bloomsburg last year.
Hutchinson's incoming freshman class may very well be her
strongest ever in terms of speed and quickness. The Huskies have
played in the conference and national tournaments in each of the last 12
years. They have captured seven PSAC crowns while winning four
national championships and placing in the top three on seven other
occasions.

Head Coach Jan Hutchinson
Jan Hutchinson is entering her 16th season in
charge of a program that has won four national titles
and seven conference championships in the past 12
seasons. While at Bloomsburg, her teams have
posted winning records in each of her 15 previous
seasons and have built an overall record of254-41-17
for a winning percentage of .841 .
Under Hutchinson, the Huskies have enjoyed several outstanding
seasons and have won 16 or more games on 11 occasions. Her teams
won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1987 and have
also registered five national runnerup finishes including last season. In
addition, the Huskies captured Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991
and 1992 and have garnered three runnerup showings. In 1991,
Hutchinson was chosen as the national "Coach of the Year."
Two athletes won All-American honors last season bringing the
total under Hutchinson to 17 performers who have combined to win 30
All-American awards.
Hutchinson also serves as head coach for the Huskies' highly
successful softball program which placed fourth at last year's NCAA
Division II national championships. Her teams also placed second
nationally in 1991 and third in 1990 and 1992. In 1981-82, she had the
rare distinction of leading two teams to national titles in the same year
as the field hockey team won the AlAW Division III crown and the
softball team duplicated the feat in the spring. Her softball teams have
appeared in the national tournament in each of the last 14 years and won
eight-consecutive PSAC titles from 1983-1990. Individually, her
players have enjoyed much recognition in softball as well with many
winning conference and regional honors and 21 players earning 32 AllAmerican awards.
Assistant Coach Alicia Hazzard
Former Huskies' two-sport standout Alicia
(Terrizzi) Hazzard will serve as an assistant coach for
the fourth time this season. The 1989 Bloomsburg
graduate performed for the field hockey team for four
years earning all-conference honors in 1988 and was
named to the All-American team in that same year.
She scored 19 goals and assisted on 12 others for the
club. As a member of the lacrosse team, she was an integral part of the
Huskies' defense which helped the club reach the PSAC playoffs in
each of her years on the team. She was an all-conference lacrosse
selection in 1989.
Beth Bowman, a 1991 All-American for the Huskies, enters her
second season as an assistant coach for Bloomsburg. Bowman played
on two NCAA runner-up squads while scoring three goals and adding
four assists during her career from the link position.
Kris Eide begins her first season as an assistant for the Huskies. She
was an All-American for Millersville in 1989 when she registered 12
goals and six assists. Eide also holds the Millersville record for goals
in a game with three.

A Look at This Season's Key Performers
Shelley Miller
Jr.
Waynesboro (Waynesboro H.S.)
Kerrie Schoenberg
Jr.
Shippensburg (Chambersburg H.S.)
Returning 1992 first-team All-American. May move
up to help the attack line this season. Very quick and
aggressive. Good transition game. Excellent instinct
for finding the goal cage. Also plays on the softball
team and has competed in NCAA championships in
both sports.
Played junior varsity as a freshman on defense before
breaking into the varsity lineup. Came on strong last
season as a link and a back. A very steady player with
tremendous reach. Very tough to beat one-on-one.
Brings a lot of confidence to the game.
Other Players to Watch
Gretchen Adams
Jr.
Mehoopany (Tunkhannock H.S.)
Jen Hitzler
Will be a starter at back. Played sparingly last season
following a knee injury two years ago. Solid defender with an increased level of play. Good marker
and excellent in one-on-one situations. Possesses a
lot of confidence.
Junior varsity starter last year, but showed rapid improvement and saw
varsity time by the end of the season. Playoff experience. Very strong
player. Showed increased speed and quickness this fall along with
better field awareness.
Chris Fink
Jr.
Berwick (Central Columbia H.S.)
Has played varsity attack for the past two seasons at
the left wing position. Great speed and athleticism.
Her stick work and positioning have greatly improved over the past two years. Expected to be an
impact player this year.
So.
SchaetTerstown (Eastern Lebanon County H.S.)
Kim Snader So.
Ephrata (Ephrata H.S.)
Played mostly with junior varsity squad in 1992 at link. Saw varsity
action in playoffs last year. Improved considerably during indoor
practices last winter. Great stick work and good field sense. She will
contribute greatly to the team this year.
Chris Basalyga
So.
Nicholson (Lackawanna Trail H.S.)
Lori Hippensteel
Jr.
Holtwood (Solanco H.S.)
A young player that contributed a lot to last year's playoff run.
Started all of last season as a freshman in the right link position.
Extremely quick and moves to the ball well. Good stick work.
Fundamentally sound.
Second-team All-American last season. Split time in
the goal with Anita Stum in 1992. Has a sound
knowledge and good fundamentals of the goal keeping position. Aggressive player. Has two years of
playoff experience.
Michelle Martin, Fr., New Holland (Garden Spot H.S.)
Nicole Mowrer, Fr., Manheim (Manheim Central H.S.)
Heather Hitzler, Fr., Schaefferstown (Eastern Lebanon Co. H.S.)
Michelle McFalls
Jr.
Brodbecks (South Western H.S.)
Varsity attack player for the past two seasons. Quick,
smart player with good ball control skills. Has shown
steady improvement throughout the past two seasons. Expected to be a leader on the attack. Good
knowledge of the game and will help younger players.
Sr.
Nicole Schiavello
West Chester (West Chester East H.S.)
One of the few seniors on the team. Played varsity
back for the past two seasons. Strong and aggressive
player with exceptional speed. Performs well under
pressure. Expected to have a great season.
Megan Shaughnessy, Fr., New Tripoli (Northwestern Lehigh H.S.)
Jen Daily, Fr., Stroudsburg (Stroudsburg H.S.)
Tracy Barndt, Fr., Coopersburg (Southern Lehigh H.S.)
Lisa Schmitt, Fr., Stroudsburg (Pocono Mountain H.S.)
Shaughnessy was a high school All-American and a member of the
1990 state championship team. Martin, Mowrer and Hitzler were three
of the four most valuable players selected in the Lancaster-Lebanon
All-Star game last fall while the other freshmen were selected to their
respective league and area all-star teams. This group of incoming
freshmen all had standout high school careers and possess good stick
work and speed. All newcomers have the ability to make an immediate
contribution to the team this fall.
