Field Hockey
1991

1991 SEASON OUTLOOK
The output of new performers on the attack line will be a
major factor in determining the Huskies' success in 1991. Three of
four players who helped account for the second-highest scoring total
in school history are gone forcing 14th-year head coach Jan
Hutchinson to revamp the club's offense and depend heavily upon a
defense that appears very strong.
Last season, enroute to a 23-1 mark that included a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship and an NCAA
Division II runnerup showing, the Huskies scored 85 goals while
limiting the opposition to only nine. In addition, Bloomsburg outshot
its opponents 787-149 while tying a school record for regular-season
victories with 18 and establishing a mark for consecutive wins in a
season with 23 by winning every game with the exception of the
national championship contest
The nation's Broderick Award winner as the sport's top
performer in Division III, senior Gisela Smith, along with All-PSAC
and all-regional selection junior Denise Miller, as well as second
team All-American Trudy Horst, give the squad leaders in all areas of
the field. Smith was the Huskies' defensive standout at her
centerback position, Horst was the leader in the midfield, and Miller
was one of two players to surpass the old single-season individual
scoring record finishing as the second-leading scorer.
While Miller should be the center of attention at the
offensive end, Smith should have plenty of experienced support. The
Huskies may rely on Miller, who scored 22 goals and assisted on five
others last year, to carry the scoring burden while newcomers become
accustomed to play on the front line. Junior Taryn Pastier and
sophomore Gretchen Adams have both shown the ability to score
goals although they have only seen limited playing time. Pastier had
four goals and three assists, and Adams scored once and assisted on
another last season.
A strong recruiting class possessing a lot of speed and talent
could mean several freshmen will see much playing time and,
therefore, need time to develop. Freshmen Bridget Bates, Chris Fink,
Michelle Mcfalls and Christine Perry should all get an ample amount
of action in the early going.
Horst and an All-PSAC choice, junior Anita Stum, join
Smith on the midfield and back lines. Horst, along with senior Beth
Bowman, provides the club with a pair of solid links in the middle of
the field, while Smith is joined by junior Donna Abbott in front of the ·
Bloomsburg net where Stum will return as the Huskies' goalie. Stum
had a solid year stopping 66 opponent shots registering 14 and onehalf shutouts with a goals against average of just 0.38 per game.
Newcomers Lori Hippensteel and Rachel Trinidad will be the top
contenders to back up- Stum.
Junior Heath~ Lawall, junior Amy Frey, and sophomore
Nicole Schiavello got'some ~xperience at the link positions last year
and they, along with first-yea:i--pefformer Shelly Miller, provide more
depth in the midfield and good speed for the transition game.
The Huskies have played in the conference and national
tournaments in each of the last 10 years winning five PSAC crowns
and four national titles so a high standard has been established. The
young team must gel early to equal the performances that have kept
the Huskies among the nation's top units for several years.

HEAD COACH JAN HUTCHINSON
Jan Hutchinson is entering her 14th season in
charge of a program that has won four national titles
and five conference championships in the past ten
seasons. While at Bloomsburg, her teams have
posted winning records in each of her 13 previous
seasons and have built an overall record of 217-3516 for a winning percentage of .809.
Under Hutchinson, the Huskies have enjoyed several outstanding
seasons and have won 16 or more games on 10 occasions. Her teams
won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1987 and have
also registered four national runnerup finishes including last season.
In addition, the Huskies captured Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) championships in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988 and
1990 and have garnered three runnerup showings.
A pair of athletes won All-American honors last season bringing
the total under Hutchinson to 13 performers who have combined to
win 23 All-American awards.
Hutchinson also serves as head coach for the Huskies• highly
successful softball program which also lost in last season's national
championship game, marking the second time in her career that both
clubs appeared in the final game in the same academic year. In 198182, she had the rare distinction of leading two teams to national titles
in the same year as the field hockey team won the AIAW Division III
crown and the softball team duplicated the feat in the spring. Her
softball team has appeared in the national tournament in each of the
last 12 years and won eight-consecutive PSAC titles from 1983-1990.
Individually, her players have enjoyed much recognition in softball as
well with many winning conference and regional honors and 15
players earning 26 All-American awards.

HUSKIES' ASSISTANT COACHES
I

Sharon O'Keefe is in her 10th season as an
assistant coach with the field hockey program in
addition to serving as the Huskies' head lacrosse
coach. She joined the physical education staff in
1982 and is a 1980 graduate of Trenton State
College where she was a member of the Lions'
1977 national championship field hockey unit.
The lacrosse program has made progressive improvement under
O'Keefe's direction and last season won its first PSAC championship
and played in the ECAC Division II title game.
Former Huskies' two-sport standout Alicia
Terrizzi will serve as an assistant coach for tJ1e
second time this season. The 1989 Bloomsburg
graduate performed for the field hockey team for
four years earning all-conference honors in 1988
and was named to the All-American team in 1988.
She scored 19 goals and assisted on 12 others for
the club. As a member of the lacrosse team, she was an integral part
of the Huskies' defense which helped the club reach the PSAC
playoffs in each of her years on the team. She was an all-conference
lacrosse selection in 1989.
