Coach Hutchinson Orchestrates Her Point!
1982
BLOOMSBURG
STATE COLLEGE
FIELD
HOCKE
Outlook
Only three regulars are gone from last year's AIAW Division Ill
National Championship team so Coach Jan Hutchinson and the
1982 Bloomsburg State College field hockey squad have to be
looking forward to the 1982 season.
Last year's Huskies posted a fine 19-4-2 mark while giving BSC
its first ever women's national crown. On the way to the title they
shut out ten of 25 opponents, finished second to AIAW Division II
titlist Lock Haven State in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships and won the Eastern AIAW Regional Tournament.
All-American juniors Deb Long and Laurie Snyder lead the
outstanding group of veterans returning this season. Long worked
her way through the U.S. Development Program this summer to
earn a spot on the East team at the U.S. Sports Festival in
Indianapolis, ranking her among the country's top 65 performers.
Snyder capped a great year in 1981 by allowing just four goals in six
contests in the regional and national tourneys. Last year she gave
up 18 goals in 25 games for a .72 goals against average. Two AllPennsylvania Conference performers, senior midfielder Jeanne
Fetch and junior back Karen Nilson, also return.
The club's leading scorer a year ago, senior Diane Imboden (9
goals) will spearhead a Husky attack that outscored its opponents
42-18. She will be reunited with other front liners, Junior Lynnette
Kyle and sophomore Linda Hershey. Kyle and Hershey combined
for nine goals last season. Hershey was the BSC leader in assists
with six.
Senior Sharon Rush and sophomores Katie Hilgar and Bev
Sprout, all backs, as well as midfielder Jackie Griffin, another
sophomore, round out the regulars.
Two members of perennial PIAA powerhouse Delaware Valley
H.S. who should add more punch to the offense are Denise
McAII ister and Elaine Eberz along with Judy Schofield, an Al I-State
performer from Newton (NJ) High School, and two Lancaster
County All-Stars from Hempfield High School, Karen Parkyn and
Liz Yeager. Two All-State goalies from New Jersey, Kelly Pfefferle
(Delaware Valley H.S.) and Heidi Stasse (Montville H.S.) should
challenge Snyder for the starting berth.
BSC opens the season on September 10 in the tough Trenton
State Tournament and faces a challenging 17 game slate that
includes newcomers Mt. St. Mary's and Slippery Rock State.
A Championship Season in Review
In 1981 the BSC field hockey squad captured the Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Division Ill national championship. The title was the first national crown ever won by a Bloomsburg women 's
athletic team.
