Outlook
Eighteen returning veterans are the nucleus on which head
coach Jan Hutchinson has built her 1981 Bloomsburg State
College field hockey team .
"We lost only one player from last year, so we are looking
forward to a successful season," stated the coach. "Our kids
have definitely improved over a year ago; the experience and
camp this summer were a big help," she added.
The Huskies are coming off an 8-5-3 mark in 1980 and many
of the varsity players have been joined by a solid group of
junior varsity team members, who posted a fine 9-1-2 record
last season.
Three girls, who performed at the USFHA National Tournament, return to give the Huskies an outstanding trio on the
midfield line. Sophomore Deb Long leads the group which
includes junior Jeanne Fetch and senior Joan Mahoney. This
summer Long went through the U.S. Development Program,
which entailed a series of three progressive camps. The final
steps brought together the top 80 players in the country; all
of whom competed for spots on the U.S. Olympic squad. At
age 18, Long was one of the youngest players to reach the
Olympic tryout stage of the program. Senior Diane Imboden,
who also played at the USFHA national event, returns to her
attack position along with juniors Robin Elsner and Polly
Dougherty. Imboden tied with the lone graduate, Lauren May,
for the team lead in scoring (6), while Elsner and Dougherty
finished second (5) and third (4) respectively. Ann Cerra, who
tallied 12 goals for the junior varsity last season moves up to
battle for a starting berth along with Mary Murphy, who
scored four goals.
Top newcomers include freshmen Jackie Griffin, from the
1980 PIAA state champion Stroudsburg High School and Bev
Sprout of Hempfield High School, along with sophomore
Lynette Kyle, a transfer from Keystone Junior College and a
member of the 1978 PIAA state championship team at Delaware Valley High School.
BSC opens its season at the tough Trenton State College
Tournament in an opening round game against Salisbury
State.
