TEAM OUTLOOK
Eight returning veterans, six other upper classmen,
and a group of untried freshmen point to some
optimism but not over-confidence in this year's wrestling outlook at Bloomsburg State College. This will
be the first time in six years that BSC will be able
to utilize freshmen on the varsity wrestling team due
to some recent rule changes in the Pennsylvania
Conference.
The eight returning veterans are headed by Captain Edward Arnold Thompson (12-2-1), a senior,
defending Pennsylvania Conference 152 lb. champion
who placed fourth in last year's N.A.I.A. competition,
and James McCue (11-2-2), a junior who was a
Pennsylvania Conference champion at heavyweight
and who also placed fourth in the N.A.I.A. Other
returnees who should show improvement over last
year are Mike Shull (2-2), a junior at 115 lbs;
Wayne Smythe (7-6-1), a junior who finished third
at 130 lbs. in the Pennsylvania Conference; Rich
Lepley (5-3-2), a senior at 145 lbs.; Russ Scheuren
(4-2-0), a junior at 145 lbs.; Jim Wallace (3-10-1),
a senior at 167 lbs. who placed fourth in the Pennsylvania Conference; and Milton Andrews (2-2-1), a
junior at 177 lbs. who was also a fourth place finisher
in Pennsylvania Conference competition.
Missing through graduation will be BSC's outstanding 137 pound Ron Russo, who had a 13-0-2
record, finished first in the Pennsylvania Conference
and the N.A.I.A., fourth in N.C.A.A., and first in
East-West competition; and Wayne Heim (12-2-1),
third in the Pennsylvania Conference.
The eight above veterans will be backed by juniors
Larry Sones at 118 lbs, and John Weiss at 142 lbs.,
and sophomore Frank Sarinelli at 134 lbs., Jay
Dombach at 134 lbs., Kirk Zurn at 150 lbs., a:qd Chris
Sweet at 190 lbs. Douglas Grady, at 167 lbs., returns
to campus as a sophomore, after serving in the Armed
Forces.
There is a possibility that two or three freshmen
will enforce the squad. All the strength that Coach
Russ Houk can muster will be needed as the Huskies
face perhaps the toughest schedule in the history of
the college, opening with two early intersectional
quadrangular meets, plus the usual strong Pennsylvania Conference competition and dual meets with
such outstanding independent teams as Oswego and
Waynesburg.

RUSSELL E. HOUK
HEAD WRESTLING COACH
Russell E. Houk, a native of Ellwood City and an
outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined
the Bloomsburg State College faculty in September,
1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football coach,
and athletic director. A line performer on the Lincoln
High School gridiron squad at Ellwood City, he later
had an outstanding record in both football and wrestling at Lock Haven State College, where he earned
his Bachelor of Science degree in 1952. He received
his Master of Education degree from Bucknell in
1957.
While coaching at both South Williamsport and
Muncy High Schools, he had very successful tenures;
several of his charges captured first and second places
in State championship meets. In the twelve years he
has been at the wrestling helm at B.S.C., he has won
five Pennsylvania State College championships, three
N.A.I.A. titles and one Wilkes Tournament title. In
1959-60, 1961-62, and 1964-65, the Huskies were undefeated. In 1962, when he had his 13-0 record, he
won both the Pennsylvania State College Conference
and the Wilkes Tourney and placed second in the
N.A.I.A. He was named N.A.I.A. Coach of the Year
in 1960-61, 1962-63, and 1964-65. His overall record
at B.S.C. stands at 118 wins, 21 losses, and 4 ties.
From 1964 through 1967, Houk served as head
football coach in addition to his wrestling and athletic
director duties, and, along with being a member of
the U. S. Olympic Wrestling Committee, he was
recently named N.A.I.A. chairman for District 19.
As a superb conditioner of men, he instills in all
of his teams the great asset of the desire to win along
with good sportsmanship.

WlLLIAM SPROULE
ASSISTANT WRESTLING COACH
Bill Sproule, a member of the Health and Physical
Education Department, just completed his initial
coaching assignment as football offensive line coach
after joining the B.S.C. faculty at the start of the
present college year.
A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, he was a gridiron member of the 1959 and 1960 Syracuse University teams that played in the Orange Bowl and Cotton
Bowl respectively.
His Master of Science degree in Physical Education was received at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N .
Y. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, he was a member
of the faculty at the school district of Waterville,
N. Y. where he was a coach and a teacher of physical education and driver education.
