WRESTLING OUTLOOK - 1968
"This season could be one of many surprises,
coach Russ Houk stated several weeks prior to the
opening of competition. "We have a gooci nucleus
of wrestlers returning from last year's squad that
posted a 7-4-1 record, a fine group of sophomores
from a 7-1 freshman team, and I feel material-wise
we are in better shape than we were a year ago."
Houk has had approximately 17 varsity and 21
freshman candidates working out since the beginning
of October. Four varsity candidates and six freshmen candidates joined the above group following
the football season.
Although the loss, through graduation, of former
N .A.I.A. champion Joe Gerst (152 lbs.), Dave Jones
(191 lbs.), and Kurt Grabfelter (130 lbs.) will undoubtedly be felt, there are several promising sophomores who should make an excellent showing as
the season progresses. Leading the returning ve terans is captain Ron Russo, who was last year·s
P.S.C.A.C. ~ d N.A.I.A~-~
1fta'nd placed sixth
in N.C.A.A. competition at 137 pounds. Other seasoned performers include Wayne Heim (123 lbs.),
runnerup to national champion Ken Melc.hior in
P.S.C.A.C. competition and sixth in N.A.I.A.; Jim
Owen (167 lbs.), fourth in P.S.C.A.C.; Jim Coleman
(177 lbs.), third in P.S.C.A.C.; and Bob Janet (hwt).
Three wrestlers, all of wh om could be sleepers in
P.S.C.A.C. competition are Arnold Thompson (160
lbs.), Jim Wallace (177 lbs.), and John Stutzman
(177 lbs.) who saw limited aotion last year clue to
an elbow injury. After a two year leave of absence,
Keith Taylor, former runner-up in P.S.C.A.C. at
115 pounds, will be back in action for the Huskies.
Bright sophomore prospects include: Mike Shull
(115 lbs.), Larry Sones (123 lbs.), Wayne Smythe
(130 lbs.), John Wise (137 lbs.), Russ Scheuren
(145 lbs.), Jerry Wa1'born (177 lbs.), Vince Christina
(191 lbs.), and Jim McCue (hwt.)
With a tough schedule that includes some of the
top teams in the east along with some standouts ii1
the mid-west, it is almost impossible to be undefeated.
However, Houk and his squad have hopes of producing a very ~uccessful season. Houk will also be handling a promising group of freshmen in their eight
preliminary meets prior to varsity competition.
RUSSELL E. HOUK, WRESTLING COACH
Russell E. Houk, a native of Ellwood City and an
outstanding coach of high school grapplers, joined
the Bloomsburg State College faculty in September,
1957, as head wrestling coach, assistant football
coach, and athletic director. A line performer on the
Lincoln High School gridiron squad at Ellwood
City, he later had an outstanding record in both football and wrestling at
Lock Haven State College,
where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
1952. He received his Master of Education degree
from Bucknell in 1957.
While coaching at both South Williamsport and
Muncy High Schools, he had very successful tenure s ;
several of his charges captured first and second
places in State championship meets. In the ten
years he has been at the wrestling helm at B.S.C.,
he has won five Pennsylvania State College championships, three N.A.I.A. titles and one Wilkes
Tournament title. In 1959-60, 1961-62, and 1964-65,
the Huskies were undefeated. In 1962, when he had
his
13-0 record, he won both the Pennsylvan ,a
State College Conference and the Wilkes Tournt>y
and placed second in the N.A.I.A. He was nam ed
N.A.T.A. Coa,ch of the Year in 1960-61, 1962-63, aPd
1964 •65. His overall record at B.S.C. stands at 107
wins, 18 losses, and 3 ties.
From 1964 through 1967, Houk served as h e:id
football coach in addition to his wrestling and athletic
director duties and, along with being a member of t h'.
U. S. Olympic Wrestling Committee, quali fi ed a,
one of the busiest small college athletic directors in
the country.
A , a superb conditioner of men, he instills in all
of his teams the great asset of the desire to w .n
alon :s with good sportsmanship.
