HARRY AUSPRICH
President
Dr. Harry Ausprich began his tenure July 15, 1985, as the
16th president of Bloomsburg University. His appointment follows that of former President James H. McCormick, who is
currently serving as the Chancellor for the State System of
Higher Education, and Dr. Larry W. Jones, who served as
President for two years on an acting and interim basis.
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, Ausprich served at Kent
State University as dean of the College of Fine and Professional Arts from 1978 to 1985. While there, he was instrumental in implementing a program in fashion design and
merchandising that has gained a national reputation. In
addition, he served as dean of the Blossom Festival School Program in cooperation with
the Cleveland Orchestra. In previous years, he served as dean of the Faculty of Arts and
later as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, both at SUNY Buffalo. While at Buffalo,
he developed a proposal for a program in dance and for a series of interdisciplinary seminars in the arts. In the early 1970s he worked at the University of Northern Iowa as dean
of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Classroom teaching experiences and departmental chairperson responsibilities comprised his major assignments at Indiana State University and Memphis State University.
In addition to these administrative responsibilities, Ausprich has had varied professional
experiences while serving as a member of the Ohio Humanities Council, the National Fine
Arts Commission, the City Planning Commission in Buffalo, the Board of Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Program Committee. He has also served as the speech editor for Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc., was a
guest lecturer and consultant on faculty development and retraining for the Pennsylvania
State Colleges, and has published and delivered papers to numerous professional speech
and theater associations.
His academic background includes a bachelor of science degree from New York University, College at Buffalo, a master of science degree from the University of Wisconsin in theater
and broadcasting, and a doctorate from Michigan State University in communications and
theater.

ROGER SANDERS
Athletic Director
Roger Sanders assumed his duties as Bloomsburg's director of athletics in June 1982. In addition, Sanders has served
as head coach of the Huskies' highly successful Division I
wrestling program for the past 15 years compiling an enviable 175-72-3 record. During his tenure, BU has captured five
Pennsylvania Conference championships and an Eastern
Wrestling League title. He has coached 37 PC champions and
numeous all-americans including six national champions.
Under his direction, many new projects have developed in
the Athletic Department including the construction of nine new
athletic practice fields and an addition to the Redman Stadium
pressbox, obtaining automobiles from local dealers for use by Athletic Department personnel in recruiting and scouting trips, an "ox roast" prior to the Homecoming contest, a facelift
or redecoration for the Nelson Fieldhouse main arena floor, among others. He has also spent
numerous hours working on a program to build a general athletic scholarship fund through
the Husky Club-Alumni Association to aid Bloomsburg in its efforts to maintain a highly competitive program in the Pennsylvania Conference and NCAA Divisions I and II.
A native of Fairless Hills, Pa., Sanders graduated from West Chester where he won three
Middle Atlantic University Division championships and a NCAA College Division crown.
During his four years of collegiate wrestling, he never lost a dual match.
Before coming to Bloomsburg, he served as head coach at New York University where
he had a five-year record of 50-18-1.

PETE ADRIAN
Head Coach
Pete Adrian is in his second year as the Huskies' head football coach, following a 10-year stint as assistant head coach
and defensive coordinator at the University of Rhode Island.
The Huskies' coach registered a 7-2-1 record in his initial season including a third place finish in the Pennsylvania Conference's Eastern Division.
The 37-year-old native of the Brilliant, Ohio, area replaced
George Landis who left Bloomsburg after four years as the
Huskies' mentor to take over the head coaching duties at nearby Bucknell University.
Adrian had served with head coach Bob Griffin at Rhode
Island leading the Rams to consecutive 10-3 records in 1984 and 1985 and appearances
in the NCAA Division I-AA national playoffs. Rhode Island also captured three Yankee Conference titles winning the crowns in 1981, 1984, and 1985. At the school, Adrian worked
specifically with the Rams' linebacking corps while coordinating the defensive schemes.
During his tenure at URI, the teams compiled a 58-51-1 record. Also in both 1984 and 1985,
Rhode Island won the Lambert/Meadowlands Cup in Division I-AA. The award symbolizes
football supremacy among eastern schools.
Prior to returning to Rhode Island, where he served as an assistant coach in the 1970
and 1971 seasons, Adrian was the defensive line coach under Griffin at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, from 1972-75. He also was the school's head golf coach.
Before his first stint at Rhode Island, he was the freshman coach at West Virginia University after his graduation from that school in 1968. While at WVU, Adrian was a linebacker
for the Mountaineers and served as captain of the freshman team.
He was a five-sport letterwinner at Brilliant High School in the sports of football, basketball, baseball, track, and golf.
In addition to his football duties, Adrian has also been an instructor in the physical education departments at Idaho State and Rhode Island. He holds membership in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), New England Football Coaching Association,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Masonic Lodge.

1987 PREVIEW OF THE HUSKIES
The adjustment period is over. In his first season at the helm , head coach Pete Adrian
redesigned the Huskies both offensively and defensively and came away with a 7-2-1 record.
A solid base of veterans return from the 1986 unit which should put the squad well on its
way to the school's fifth consecutive non-losing campaign.
One of the best passing/rushing combinations in Division II will provide the Huskies with
a potentially outstanding offensive attack as quarterback Jay DeDea (6-3, 220) and runningback Tom Martin (5-7, 169) enter their senior seasons. DeDea has already set several school
records and many more are within sight of the strong-armed veteran . Last season he passed
for 2255 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first full, healthy season with the club. His career
totals stand at 332 completions in 697 attempts for 4705 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Martin earned a starting spot in the backfield in the middle of 1985 and has used his quick,
elusive style to rush for almost 2000 yards since that time. He had 918 yards on 183 carries
last year and scored eight times. His durability may be his biggest asset, and he wiil again
be depended on to do the bulk of the ball carrying.
Paul Venesky (6-0 , 186) is listed behind DeDea, and although the senior has seen only
limited action over the past two seasons, he has the talent to step into the starting role if
called upon. A year ago he threw just nine passes, completing five of those throws, two
for touchdowns.
A pair of powerful runners should share time in the backfield with Martin. Juniors Mike
Medina (5-10, 198) and Leonard Bluitt (5-9, 184) have both shown the ability to pick up yardage
when needed, as Medina gained 111 yards on 31 carries last season and Bluitt, who sat
out 1986, contributed 185 yards on 46 rushes during the Huskies' march to the Pennsylvania Conference Championship two years ago.
When the Huskies want to put the ball in the air, several quality receivers are available.
Tight end John Rockmore (6-1, 231) was the team 's second leading pass catcher a year
ago with 31 receptions for 449 yards and a touchdown. The squad's most serious deep threat,
Curtis Still (5-9, 160), and one of the club's most versatile athletes, Jeff Sparks (6-1 , 169),
have the inside track at wide receiver. Still caught 22 passes for 370 yards and two touchdowns in 1986, while Sparks converted from quarterback midway through the season and
pulled in three receptions for 80 yards , the highest average per catch of any of the team's
receivers at 26 .7 yards. In addition , Martin (eight catches in 1986), Medina (four catches) ,
and Bluitt have all shown that they can catch the ball circling out of the backfield.
More size than ever before will be on the offensive line as four of the projected starters
weigh in at more than 250 pounds. Veteran center John Fulmer (6-2, 253) , who was named
to the conference 's all-star unit along with DeDea and Martin last year, will be in the middle
once again with first-year guards Bob Preston (6-1, 241) and Dave Pysher (6-1, 250) on either
side. The junior duo has been listed as reserve tackles for the past two seasons but made
the move inside during spring drills.
Two of the biggest members of the squad, Vinny Ottomanelli (6-4, 260) and Joe Natale
(6-4 , 315), will man the tackle spots. Ottomanelli developed into an outstanding pass blocker last season after moving from defensive tackle, and Natale is in his first year with the
club following two seasons at the junior college level.
Defensively, the Huskies will also boast some size up front as experienced tackles Chris
Gross (6-5 , 270) and Al Royster (6-4, 280) will hold down two of the three positions. Royster
was the Huskies' fifth-leading tackler in his first season of collegiate football, and Gross
ranked among the leaders in quarterback sacks as he saw plenty of action at both tackle
spots. The nose guard spot is wide open with senior Jim O'Toole (5-11 , 210) and sophomore Larry Deluca (6-1 , 235) the most likely candidates to get the starting nod.
Four performers, all of whom lacked experience a year ago, saw a lot of valuable playing
time at defensive end and should help the area to be one of the strongest on this year's
squad . Senior Duane Hettich (6-1 , 209) , along with juniors Joshua Lee (6-2, 214), Todd Leitzel
(6-0, 217) , and Steph Pettit, (6-1, 206) combine to give the coaching staff a group of quality
performers on the outside. Pettit was the leading tackler at the position with 50, which rated
him among the team leaders. As a group, they totalled 115 tackles.

6

The major task facing the defense entering the 1987 season is finding replacements for
both inside linebackers who both were listed among the top three defensive players on last
year's team. Three performers who spent their time primarily on special teams will get the
opportunity to play on a regular basis. Senior Wade Pickett (5-11, 210) and juniors Gene
Straface (6-0 , 224) and Brian Angney (6-0, 210) spent the spring becoming accustomed to
the regular role . Straface saw the most time last season recording 19 tackles. Angney and
Pickett combined for another 19 hits.
All-conference choice Derrick Hill (5-11 , 177) leads the secondary which made vast improvement as the 1986 season progressed . The junior led the squad in the interception
category with five in addition to his 42 tackles . The corners are listed the same way for the
second straight season , although it did not work out that way by the time the first game
was played in 1986. Bruce Linton (5-10 , 179) established himself as one of the team 's most
consistent peformers during the season and registered 50 tackles and was among the top
five defensive point leaders for the Huskies .
However, a leg injury sidelined projected starter Tom Heavey (5-9, 192) for the entire season , and he will start all over again in 1987. The converted tailback showed no effects of
the injury in spring practice and appears ready to assume the duties , along with Hill· and
Linton , giving the Huskies great speed and quickness in the defensive backfield .
The final spot on the defense will be taken over by a proven performer as senior Dan
Shutt (6-0, 182) moves from one of the corners to strong safety. He had 31 tackles last season .
Veteran kicker Chris Mingrone (5-7, 155) enjoyed a successful season a year ago connecting on 10 of 20 field goal attempts , including a long conversion of 41 yards and 24 of
29 extra point tries. He was the club's leading scorer with 54 points . In additon , he was
a major factor in the Huskies ' success on all five on -sides kickoffs they attempted during
the campaign.
The pressing responsibilities facing the staff as the Huskies prepare for the school 's 90th
season of football will be to find a punter and produce quality depth from the more than
60 freshmen expected to report to camp .
One of the major changes for the upcoming season will be the addition of an 11th game
to the regular-season slate .

Junior Comerback Bruce Linton (4) .

A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES' 1987 VETERANS

John Avia

Leonard Bluitt

Dave Brewster

Jay DeDea

Brian Angney, LB, 6-0, 210, junior
Saw more action last season than in the previous year and appears ready to step into
a key role . He is projected into a starting linebacker slot and is one of the club's top returning hitters. Performed primarily as a special teams performer in 1986 and recorded 13 tackles
and recovered a fumble . Runs very well and should give the Huskies good pursuit along
the line of scrimmage.

John Avia, DT, 6-3, 245, junior
Should see considerably more action in 1987 at either defensive tackle or nose guard.
Experience is limited but coachability and good work ethic have earned him a spot among
the top four projected linemen. He registered two tackles and a pass breakup while seeing
very little playing time behind a veteran group up front a year ago.

Leonard Bluitt, RB, 5-9, 184, junior
Returns to the squad after a season 's absence and is expected to make a big contribution immediately. Enjoyed an outstanding spring and showed excellent blocking ability. Provides a great complement to team's leading ground gainer, Tom Martin , in the backfield.
Has two-year rushing totals of 95 carries for 400 yards and two touchdowns .

Dave Brewster, WR, 5-11, 166, junior
Played quite a few downs in 1986 as a reserve wide receiver. A controlled player who
runs very disciplined routes and catches the ball extremely well. Has deceiving speed which
gives him the capability to be a serious deep threat. Caught two passes last season for 51
yards.

Jay DeDea, QB, 6-3, 220, senior
Great arm and uncanny ability to escape heavy rush and find the open receiver. With
a much better understanding of the new offense after running it for a year, he could enjoy
his best season yet. Already one of Division ll's top passers, he should easily establish himself as the school record holder in almost every passing category. Has thrown for 4705 yards
on 332 completions so far in his career, including 31 touchdowns. Last season he completed 130 passes for 2255 yards and 14 scores. He was named to the All-Pennsylvania
Conference second team last season .

10

John Fulmer

Chris Gross

Tom Heavey

Duane Hettich

Derrick Hill

Ed Frayne, TE, 6-3, 232, junior
Is battling for a starting role at tight end after sitting out last season , due to his transfer
from Wagner. Gets off the ball and runs very well. Should get a chance to prove himself
early as the coaching staff searches for a replacement for school 's all-time reception leader
Kevin Grande.

John Fulmer, C, 6-2, 253, junior
Has a vast amount of playing experience and must be one of the leaders on the unit this
season . His familiarity with the other offensive personnel should make him a key to the
Huskies' success this season. Must anchor the line with two first-year starters on either side
of him at the guard spots. He has been named to the All-PC second team in each of the
last two seasons .

Chris Gross, DT, 6-5, 270, senior
One of the returning starters on the defensive line and will hold down one of those spots
again this fall. Has greatly improved size and strength over the past few years and is a solid
pass rusher . Looked extremely comfortable in the spring drills and should give opposing
offenses fits this season . Had 20 tackles, three sacks, a fumble recovery , and a pass breakup
in 1986. His career tackle total stands at 40 .

Tom Heavey, DB, 5-9, 192, sophomore
Missed all of last season with a leg injury after he had earned a starting berth at one of
the corners. Showing no effects of the layoff, he has re-established himself as a starter and
enjoyed a solid spring practice session. This will be his first season in the defensive backfield after moving from running back in 1985 where he carried the ball 42 times for 197 yards .

Duane Hettich, DE, 6-1, 209, senior
One of three players who saw a lot of playing time at defensive end during the 1986 campaign. He has good strength and athletic ability for the position . Gained vast experience
a year ago which should help him be one of the defensive leaders . Recorded 23 tackles
last season and now has 55 career tackles , a fumble recovery , and six pass breakups .

Derrick Hill, DB, 5-11, 177, junior
If he reaches expectations, there is no doubt he will be one of the top performers in the
entire conference this season. A smart player who possesses good speed and hands and
will be one of the players looked to for the big play. He doubles as the Huskies' top punt
returner. Had 42 tackles in 1986 as well as a team-high five interceptions and four pass
breakups and a fumble recovery. Was an All-PC second team selection last year and has
53 tackles in his two seasons . Last year he returned 12 punts for 74 yards after handling
a school-record 24 for 276 yards the previous season.

11

Joshua Lee

Todd Leitzel

Bruce Linton

Scott Long

Tom Martin

Joshua Lee, DE, 6-2, 214, junior
Pushing for a starting role at defensive end. An oustanding pass rusher who is one of
the team's top athletes. Missed one season due to an injury, so game experience could
be one of the few things lacking. Could be a pleasant surprise for the staff before the season is over. Had 12 tackles and broke up two passes last season.

Todd Leitzel, DE, 6-0, 217, junior
He is one of the returning starters at defensive end, which is one of the deepest areas
on the squad. An extremely strong player who gained valuable experience as last season
progressed. Rushes the opposing passer very well and has a way of showing up where the
ball is. Recorded two sacks along with 30 tackles a year ago. He also broke up four passes.

Bruce Linton, DB, 5-10, 179, junior
Enjoyed solid season as a first-year starter in 1986 at one of the cornerback slots. Excellent athlete who also competes as a member of the Huskies' track and field team. Good
speed and field presence should make him one of the team's top performers this season.
Coaching staff expects him to surpass 50-tackle total of last season. Also contributed eight
pass breakups, an interception, and a fumble recovery. Had seven tackles in limited action
as a freshman.

Paul Lonergan, WR/TE, 6-4, 188, freshman
Entering his first season with the club after transfering from Moravian. Appears to be one
of the Huskies' iop pass catchers following spring drills and has been a good addition to
the receiving corps. Catches the ball well in a crowd and has the size which allows the staff
to use him at either tight end or wide receiver.

Scott Long, OG, 5-11, 237, junior
Coming off his best spring practice and should see more playing time than any previous
season. He is making the move from center to offensive guard where he'll challenge for
a starting position following the graduation of both starters from last season. An extremely
hard worker who has performed well when called on in a relief role.

Tom Martin, RB, 5-7, 169, senior
Has turned into one of the best backs in Bloomsburg history, rushing for just under 2000
yards over the past two seasons. Has outstanding ability to make cuts and find the open
hole, and his durability may be his biggest asset. Team's leading rusher in each of the last
two years including a 183-carry, 918-yard performance in 1986. An all-PC pick last year,
he has scored 18 touchdowns since joining the Huskies and carries an average of 4.8 yards
per rush. Another great year could make him just the second back in school history to run
for more than 3000 yards.

12

Mike Medina

Chris Mingrone

Vinny Ottomanelli

Steph Pettit

Wade Pickett

Mike Medina, RB, 5-10, 198, junior
Has filled the role of a blocking back while seeing limited action over the past two seasons. Strongest member of the backfield who will be looked to, especially in short yardage
situations, and shouid see increasing playing time. Was the team's second leading ground
gainer in 1986 with 111 yards on 31 rushes , an average of 3.6 per carry . He is also a solid
pass catching threat out of the backfield.

Chris Mingrone, K, 5-7, 155, senior
Established himself as the team 's number one kicker in the spring and produced a solid
season . Accurate, consistent kicker who is constantly improving his range . Connected on
10 of 20 field goal attempts including a successful long conversion of 41 yards . Also was
24 for 29 on extra point tries and led the Huskies in scoring with 54 points . He was the major
factor as the Huskies were successful on all of their five on-sides kick attempts during the
season.

Joe Natale, OT, 6-4, 315, junior
Will step into a starting role immediately after playing at the junior college level for two
seasons. The biggest member of the squad , he possesses good feet and will help give the
Huskies one of the best pass blocking pair of tackles in the conference . Adds important
size and experience to an offensive line that is undergoing a change.

Vinny Ottomanelli, OT, 6-4, 260, senior
Turned in a solid 1986 season in his first year at the position . Was one of the Huskies '
top pass blockers and has the potential to be the best of the offensive linemen. Gives the
offense good mobility up front and will be looked to for leadership on the field . Has improved
his strength and , along with Natale, gives the Huskies a solid performer on each side.

Steph Pettit, DE, 6-1, 206, junior
Was a spot starter a year ago , seeing a lot of action in his sophomore season . Is one
of four performers who could see quite a bit of playing time this season after all four gained
a year of experience in 1986. Was one of the Huskies' top tacklers with 50 , including 29
unassisted. Also saw some playing time as a freshman and contributed eight tackles .

Wade Pickett, LB, 5-11, 203, senior
A player with a good field sense who will be competing for or.e of the starting inside berths.
Has seen time on special teams, gaining experience which should be an asset to the defense.
Has registered 11 tackles and a sack over the past two seasons .

Bob Preston

Dave Pysher

John Rockmore

Al Royster

Phil Sallusli

Bob Preston, OG, 6-1, 241, junior
His performance in the spring drills has him listed at the top of the depth chart at one
of the guard positions. Made the move from offensive tackle after playing in a reserve role
for two years. He is the squad's quickest lineman on the offensive side of the ball. His learning
process and performance will be one of the major keys to the offense's success this season.

Dave Pysher, OG, 6-1, 250, junior
His story is almost identical to Preston's. Made the move to guard from tackle in the spring
and has earned a starting spot. Developed good upper body strength and helps give the
line another player weighing more than 250 pounds. How well he and Preston adapt to the
new positions will determine the early-season success.

John Rockmore, TE, 6-1, 231, senior
Will be one of DeDea's prime targets and must have a great year for the offense to be
successful. One of the top athletes on the team who has made tremendous strides over
the past few seasons. Was the team's second leading receiver in 1986 with 31 receptions
for 449 yards and a touchdown. Has caught 42 passes in two seasons for 640 yards and
two touchdowns.

Al Royster, OT, 6-4, 280, sophomore
Made a big impact on the team as a freshman. His daily improvement leads to expectations of a great year in 1987. Has the size and quickness plus all the other assets to become
one of the dominant defensive players in the Pennsylvania Conference. Created havoc in
several opposing backfields, in addition to recording 55 tackles and recovering a fumble.

Phil Sallusti, OG, 6-0, 227, senior
Should see the most playing time of his career as the Huskies' number three guard. His
versatility gives the coaching staff the option of usirlg him on either side. Moved to the offensive side of the football from linebacker where he played behind several veterans for his
first three seasons.

14

Dan Shutt

Jell Sparks

Curtis Still

Gene Straface

Delmas Woods

Dan Shutt, DB, 6-0, 182, senior
May be one of the real important elements in the defense after moving from cornerback
to strong safety this season. Looked good in the new position in spring drills and possesses
the necessary speed and quickness to give the coaching staff what it wants in that spot.
Had 31 tackles and three pass breakups a year ago.

Jeff Sparks, WR, 6-1 , 169, sophomore
Extremely talented player who could be used in several positions other than wide receiver .
Made the move from quarterback but that does not rule out his return to the position at
various times. Caught just three passes in 1986 but made them count for 80 yards, a teamhigh average of 26.7 yards per reception. One of the catches was also for a touchdown.

Curtis Still, WR, 5-9, 160, senior
Was one of four receivers to catch more than 20 passes in 1986 and had the highest
average of the group at 16.8 yards per catch. Once again will be the Huskies' most serious
deep threat. Gets off the ball very well and has great speed. Had 22 receptions last year
for 370 yards and two touchdowns. Career totals equal 36 catches, 594 yards and four
touchdowns.

Gene Straface, LB, 6-0, 224, junior
Has been one of the top hitters on the Huskies' special teams over the past two seasons.
He will battle for a starting linebacker spot. Lacks only experience but runs very well and
has good hands. Has played sparingly in each of his first two seasons with the team, recording
28 tackles, including 15 unassisted.

Delmas Woods, DB, 6-0, 206, junior
Is projected in a role as one of the reserve defensive backs. Plays very well against the
run and could see considerable action. Will also be counted on to be one of the Huskies'
top special teams performers. Gets involved in the action when he is on the field. Increased
his playing time over freshman year and has 29 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, a
fumble recovery, and three pass breakups in two seasons.

15

1986 REVIEW OF THE HUSKIES
First-year head coach Pete Adrian introduced his one-back offense to the Pennsylvania
Conference as the Huskies finished with a 7-2-1 record , the fourth straight non-losing season for the Huskies. Quarterback Jay DeDea passed for 2255 yards and 14 touchdowns,
while tailback Tom Martin rushed for 918 yards and scored eight times to lead the Huskies'
offensive attack . On the other side of the ball, linebackers Jake Williams and Butch Kahlau ,
along with nose guard Wes Cook and free safety Brian Scriven , combined for 340 tackles
to head the defense. Eastern Division losses to West Chester and Millersville knocked the
Huskies out of contention for their third straight PC East title.

Game One - September 13 - Bloomsburg 30, Shippensburg 26
Defensive tackle Al Royster stopped a Frank Van Buren surge on the one inch line with less
than one minute remaining to secure a slim Bloomsburg lead and the season-opening win.
Tom Martin scored from two yards out in the first quarter, and Chris Mingrone made good
on a 36-yard field goal for BU as the game was tied 10-10 at halftime. Mingrone hit two
more times, from 41 and 34 yards, while quarterback Jay DeDea hit Curtis Still for one touchdown and ran tor another to give Bloomsburg the victory. Jake Williams led the defense
with 11 tackles, including seven unassisted.

Game Two - September 20 - Bloomsburg 38, Lock Haven 32
A DeDea to Jeff Bolles 31-yard touchdown pass, along with a Mingrone extra point, put
Bloomsburg in the lead for good 14-10 as the Huskies went on to their second win in as
many games. Lock Haven struck first with a Pat Cahill to John Klacik 45-yard touchdown
pass . Following a DeDea nine-yard TD run , the Bald Eagles Mickey Miller hit a 34-yard field
goal for a 10-7 lead . The Huskies went on to open up the lead with two Martin touchdowns
in the second quarter- One from five yards and the other from 37. John Rockmore also
scored for BU on a 44-yard pass from DeDea. Wes Cook led the defensive unit with 15 tackles,
seven unassisted .

Game Three - September 26 - West Chester 44, Bloomsburg 7
A 20-yard interception return for a touchdown by the Golden Rams' Bob Keough on the
Huskies' second offensive play set the tone of the game early as DeDea threw six interceptions in the Huskies' first Pennsylvania Conference loss since the 1984 " State Game ." The
Huskies threw eight interceptions during the contest , which was played under the lights
in the Rams' Farrell Stadium . A DeDea to Kevin Grande six-yard TD was Bloomsburg's only
scoring on the evening . Bruce Linton led the defensive unit with seven unassisted tackles
and one interception .

Game Four - October 4 - Bloomsburg 20, East Stroudsburg 3
A first-quarter field goal was all East Stroudsburg could manage as the Huskies bounced
back from their first loss of the season to pick up win number three. Mingrone hit 20 and
41-yard field goals, while Still and Grande caught DeDea passes of 74 and six yards, respectively , for the Bloomsburg scoring . Williams and Derrick Hill each recorded interceptions
to lead the defense . On the day, Williams registered nine tackles, including seven unassisted . DeDea completed 14 of 31 passes for 254 yards.

Game Five - October 11 - Bloomsburg 39, Cheyney 14
Four Huskies scored touchdowns on the day, including two by Ken Liebel to lead the
Huskies to their fourth win against a lone loss. Martin rushed for 140 yards and scored one
TD, while DeDea passed for 151 yards and three touchdowns for the win . The Husky defense
forced four Cheyney interceptions. Hill registered two interceptions, while Pete Woodhouse
and Williams each had one. Grande and Bolles also scored for BU , while Mingrone hit on
a pair of field goals from 34 and 27 yards to round out the Huskies' scoring .

16

Game Six - October 18 - Bloomsburg 51, Mansfield 26
Martin ran for three touchdowns, while DeDea ran for two and passed for two more , as
the Huskies easily defeated the visiting Mounties . Bolles scored on a 72-yard pass , Liebel
caught a 19-yard TD pass, and Jeff Sparks and reserve quarterback Paul Venesky connected on a 25-yard scoring toss. Williams was the defensive leader with 16 tackles , eight
unassisted and one interception . DeDea passed for 280 yards, while Martin rushed for another
118.

Game Seven - October 25 - Millersville 36, Bloomsburg 3
BU punter Tim Chamberlain stepped out of the endzone for a safety , and Millersville 's
Gary Chidester scored on a one-yard run to give the Marauders an early 9-0 lead, as Millersville went on to knock Bloomsburg out of contention for the PC East crown . A 39-yard Mingrone field goal was all the scoring the Huskies could muster on the afternoon . The Huskies
got inside the Marauders 10-yard line several times during the contest, but could not cross
the goal line. DeDea completed only 12 passes in 27 attempts. Martin gained 84 yards on
19 carries on the ground. Cook registered 12 tackles , 10 unassisted , in the Huskies ' defensive effort.

Game Eight - November 1 - Bloomsburg 24, Slippery Rock 22
A Mingrone 30-yard field goal in the third quarter proved to be the winning margin , as
Slippery Rock scored twice in the fourth period in a tough inter-division matchup . A pair
of foiled two-point attempts by the Rockets gave the Huskies the win . DeDea threw one
touchdown and ran for another , while Tom Martin scored on the ground for the Huskies'
other points. Wes Cook registered 11 tackles and one sack to spark the Husky defense.
Woodhouse and Delmas Woods each picked off Slippery Rock passes .

Game Nine - November 8 - Bloomsburg 7, Kutztown 7
A rain-soaked and foggy Redman Stadium was the setting for a defensive battle between
Bloomsburg and the Golden Bears, which saw the Huskies fumble twice into the Kutztown
endzone. Kutztown's Dave Cullen scored on a 33-yard pass from Greg Buchman in the third
period to give them the first lead. Grande scored on a seven-yard pass from DeDea to tie
the score early in the final period. Kahlau led the BU defense with 11 tackles, a pass breakup,
and one interception. Williams also registered an interception for BU . DeDea managed to
throw for 122 yards on nine passes under the tough conditions . Martin rushed for 177 yards
on the day.

Game Ten - November 15 - Bloomsburg 21, Norfolk State 7
The homestanding Spartans struck first in the opening period on a 27-yard TD pass , but
the Huskies scored 14 points in the second period and seven in the fourth to close out the
season on a winning note. Grande scored on a 42-yard pass from DeDea, while DeDea scored
on a six-yard run to end the first-half scoring. Mike Medina added to the lead on a threeyard run in the season's final quarter. Williams and Kahlau each had 14 tackles, and Woodhouse picked off three passes to pace the Huskies' defense. DeDea completed 16 of 31
passes for 245 yards, and Martin ran for 66 yards on 10 carries to lead all rushers.

DEDEA-MARTIN COMBO MAKES
HUSKIES' OFFENSE CLICK
Bloomsburg football has enjoyed two
of its finest back-to-back seasons in the
89 years of the sport at the school , and
the emergence of an outstanding offensive attack is one of the major reasons
for that success . The past two years have
seen the Huskies post a combined record of 19-3-1 and pile up over 7,800 yards
in total offense due , in large part, to the
efforts of seniors Jay DeDea and Tom
Martin , who have been credited with
almost 70 percent of that yardage .
The duo makes up one of the top passing/rushing combinations in Division II
and will be looking to etch their names
in the Bloomsburg record books as they
close their collegiate careers in 1987.
Both came to join the Huskies in different ways but have joined together to lead
an offense, which can pile up yards and
DEDEA
score points in a hurry!
DeDea joined the squad for the 1983 campaign as a 23-year-old freshman leaving a job
in his hometown of Altoona to pursue a degree and to have a chance to play football. That
opportunity presented itself immediately as he won the starting nod for the opener under
second-year head coach George Landis. He completed 18 of 28 pass attempts for 199 yards
and the team's lone touchdown in an 18-7 loss at Slippery Rock in his first and only start
that season.
He suffered a knee injury during the following week in a practice session and was forced
to the sidelines for the remainder of the season. His knees have been the only obstacle
keeping the strong-armed veteran from holding most of the school's passing records prior
to the start of his final year this fall as he has played just one full season .
In 1984 his expected return to the lineup was delayed by a reccurence of the knee problems, and he didn't see action until the fourth game. After working himself back into shape
with increasing playing time, he took over the starting role again in the eighth game of the
year. From there he directed the Huskies to their first-ever Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division title.
Enroute to the crown , he enjoyed one of the finest efforts of his career completing 24
of 48 passes for a school-record 373 yards in a 34-31 triumph over homestanding West
Chester, a game that will be remembered for a long time at Bloomsburg . Trailing 31-28 with
just five seconds left in the contest , DeDea connected with wide receiver Curtis Still on a
50-yard " Hail Mary" pass to give the Huskies the victory and the PC East championship
DeDea played in eight games that season , including the conference championship contest , a 21-14 loss to California (Pa.), completing 74 of 151 passes for 1,094 yards and 10
touchdowns.
The return of almost the entire squad from the previous season had the Huskies with very
high expectations entering the 1985 campaign. They exceeded even the most optim istic
goals winning the PC title and advancing to the NCAA Division II semifinals before ending
the season with a sparkling 12-1 record.
DeDea started the season healthy but was forced to miss five games in the middle of
the season with another knee injury before returning to lead the Huskies to their best season ever. He finished with 80 completions in 177 attempts for 1,157 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The most recently completed campaign proved to be the standout's most successful , due
mainly to the fact that he participated in all 10 games. He completed 160 of 341 passes
for 2,255 yards and 14 touchdowns helping the team to its fourth consecutive non-losing
season with a 7-2-1 mark.
DeDea already holds the Bloomsburg records for most completions and attempts in a
career as well as some total offensive yardage marks. Several other standards are within
his grasp, and a look at his statistics to date gives good indication that he will become the

22

most prolific passer in Bloomsburg history . His totals entering this season are
332 of 697 passes for 4,705 yards and 36
touchdowns .
When the Huskies don 't want to go
through the air, the decision has been a
simple one since Martin assumed his
position in the backfield two years ago .
The diminutive , elusive back is seeking
to become only the second runningback
in school history to gain more than 3,000
yards in a career, and he is shooting for
that plateau in just three seasons'
A transfer from Ithaca College , he has
been the team's leading rusher in each
of the last two seasons and established
school records in several rushing categories . He saw limited action in the first four
contests of the 1985 season before taking over the starting tailback slot in the

MARTIN

I

fifth game.
He gained 69 yards on 16 carries in that initial time in the starting role and has been in
the position for the last 19 games. His durability made him the workhorse in the backfield
in 1985, and he carried the ball 222 times, just nine times for 57 yards prior to the fifth game .
His most outstanding effort came in the season 's eighth contest as the Huskies had to
battle from behind all afternoon to defeat Kutztown, 29-23, to keep their unbeaten streak
alive. Martin set school marks for carries with 42 and also established a school record for
rushing yards in the game with 259. He scored twice in the game .
He became only the second runner in Bloomsburg history to rush for more than 1,000
yards in a season , gaining 1,017 and scoring 10 touchdowns. In addition , his versatility was
one of the club's most valuable assets as he caught five passes for 36 yards and another
score , and returned 15 kickoffs for 298 yards. His all-purpose yardage for the 1985 season
totalled 1,351 yards.
A change in the offense under a new coaching staff a year ago highlighted Martin as he
became the lone back in the pass-oriented offense. As the season progressed , the running
attack began to mix well with the passing, and Martin enjoyed another solid season , gaining 918 yards on 183 carries. He raised his average from 4.6 yards per carry in 1985 to
5.0 per rush last season.
In the receiving department , he caught eight passes for 80 yards and returned 16 kickoffs for another 363 yards , a fine average of 22.7 yards per return . He also increased his
all-purpose yardage over the previous year racking up 1,361 yards .
He has played in a total of 21 games since coming to Bloomsburg and has career total s
of 1.935 yards on 405 carries, an average of 4.8 yards per carry . Martin has 13 receptions
for 116 yards and another 661 yards in returns. He has scored 19 touchdowns in the two
seasons.
Eleven regular-season games are slated for the first time on the Huskies ' schedule and
if this duo caps off their careers at Bloomsburg as expected , two things are very likely . Many
records are going to fall , and the Huskies will continue to win a lot of football games .

PENNSYLVANIA STATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (Pennsylvania Conference) is comprised of
14 schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. This new governing body
took over from the Department of Education on July 1, 1983, and the change was also reflected in the granting of university status to all member institutions formerly known as " state
colleges." Dr. James McCormick is the chancellor of the Pennsylvania SSHE.
The programs in the Pennsylvania Conference are under the leadership of a Board of
Directors, which consists of the 14 university presidents. The organization of the conference, through its separate divisions of men's and women's athletics, is unique because
it enables both programs to develop independently while sharing common goals. One of
the largest conferences in the nation, the Pennsylvania Conference sponsors championship competition in 10 sports for men and 10 for women as follows: Fall Season - MEN cross country, football, soccer; WOMEN - cross country, field hockey, tennis and volleyball. Winter Season - MEN - Basketball, swimming and diving, and wrestling; WOMEN basketball, gymnastics , swimming and diving. Spring Season - MEN - baseball, golf, tennis, and track and field; WOMEN - lacrosse, softball, and track and field.
All 14 schools are members of Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA). In individual sports, however, some schools have elected to compete in either NCAA
Divisions I or Ill.
Athletes and teams have won numerous honors in national competition and have helped
the PSAC become one of the most respected "small college" conferences in the nation.

1987 Norfolk State Outlook
The 1987 season will definitely be a regrouping year for Norfolk State after going through
its first losing season since 1981 . NSU got off to a solid start with three wins in a row but
could manage just one more victory enroute to a 4-6 finish. However, with 39 of 58 letterwinners including 12 starters returning, 1987 should be a different story. Juniors Tony Graves
and Ken Dickens return as the team's top rushers. Graves led the Spartans in rushing with
454 yards on 102 carries while Dickens was fourth with 129 yards despite playing in only
the first three games due to an injury. Derrick Vance played solidly for much of the season
and was second in rushing with 316 yards on 61 carries. Other returnees who saw time
in the backfield in 1986 include Gary Miller, 100 yards; Donald Morris, 69 yards, two TD's;
and George Gray with 57 yards on the ground and 80 yards in receiving. Coach Bailey's
quarterback situation remains in question . Sophomores Maurice Lawrence and Ron Jones.
who shared the job in 1986, return along with James Barnes who saw limited action. In addition to these three, Clarence Jackson and Gerry Morris will vie for the spot. Defense was
the cause of some of the NSU problems in 1986. The rushing defense, yielded 1,809 yards
while the pass defense gave up 1,440 yards. The second leading tackler from 1986, Ben
Jackson , will return to his linebacker position. Other top defensive players, who will line
up for 1987, include Ted Bates, Johnny Washington, John Jessup, and Bernard Bright. With
the -addition of some tough and talented newcomers expect the defense to be something
the Spartans can rely on in 1987.

1987 Shippensburg Outlook
The Red Raiders will try to rebound from last year's 3-7 mark after making adjustments
under new head coach Joe Bottiglieri , a 1971 graduate of Bloomsburg. A youthful unit is
expected to take the field on opening day , and if the club matures quickly the Red Raid ers
could be a factor in the Pennsylvania Conference 's Western Division race. The Red Raiders boast one of the top runningbacks in the entire conference in two-time all-PC tailback
Frank Van Buren , who missed three games last season due to injury. He gained 501 yards
on the ground and hauled in 31 passes for 385 additional yards. He scored six touchdowns
and displayed his versatility by throwing for two more scores. Sophomore fullback Rob Plummer picked up 197 yards in three games as a starter in the backfield . Shippensburg also
has an experienced quarterback in Rob Klock who passed for 1,032 yards and nine touchdowns in five games last fall. Four Chapman , the starting free safety a year ago, has switched
to quarterback and will push for the starting role . Despite Chapman 's defection from the
defense, the Red Raiders have plenty of quality performers to pick up the slack. All-conference
corner Kevin Mylett and linebackers Charles Parker and Pat Fahie were involved in a lot
of action in 1986. Mylett had five interceptions and 40 tackles while doubling as the return
man averaging 12.9 and 19.3 yards per punt and kickoff returns, respectively. Parker and
Fahie combined to make 160 tackles . The biggest task facing the staff is almost completely
rebuilding the offensive and defensive lines.

Tom Jones

1987 Lock Haven Outlook
The Bald Eagles' success in the upcoming season will depend on how quickly they become acquainted with new head coach Tom Jones' system . Jones who served as the offensive
coordinator at Middle Tennessee State faces the task of rebuilding a unit that won just one
time in 10 outings in 1986. The new staff will scrap the wishbone offense employed by the
Bald Eagles over the past few seasons for a multiple I set. The return of quarterback Pat
Cahill , who has been the club 's starting signal caller for the last three seasons, should make
the transition a little smoother. Cahill , one of 32 returning letterwinners, completed only 54
of his 154 passing attempts for 931 yards and three touchdowns but was the team's leading rusher with 823 yards on 213 carries. He scored 13 times on the ground. Runningback
Bruce Pendleton and wide receiver John Klacik provide the Bald Eagles with two other potent weapons on offense. Pendleton was the squad's third leading rusher in 1986 with 353
yards on 70 rushes while Klacik caught 41 of the team's 57 pass completions during the
season for 723 yards. Pendleton also doubles as a punt and kickoff returner . Defensively,
seven starters are back including all-conference middle guard Steve Suriano. He was the
team 's second-leading tackler with 73 and led the Bald Eagles with eight sacks. Also returning
to give the squad a solid base on the defensive side of the ball are outside linebacker Ray
Howard and defensive backs Bryon Comly and Guy Wade. Howard made 62 tackles and
had four sacks, and Comly and Wade combined for another 87 tackles and seven interceptions. With at least a dozen other veterans returning on defense, some position switches
can be expected.

1987 West Chester Outlook
The defending Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division champions return 14 starters
including several key performers on offense. Coach Danny Hale 's club went through PC
East play unbeaten before falling to Indiana, 20-6, in the conference title contest and the
Rams are anxious to get another shot at the crown. Quarterback Al Niemela was named
the PC Eastern Division "Player of the Year" for his efforts last season completing almost
50 percent of his passes and tossing 22 touchdowns. He connected on 199 of 339 attempts
for 2,145 yards. Niemela's favorite two targets, wide receivers Jim Sheehan and Bill Hess ,
will be looking to enjoy the same kind of seasons they had a year ago . Sheehan caught
71 passes , just six short of the conference record for receptions in a season , for 708 yards
and 10 touchdowns. Hess pulled in 51 catches for 587 yards and four scores. The Rams '
leading rusher also returns in the backfield . Speedster Jason Sims gained 1,151 yards on
182 carries and scored eight touchdowns. Three starters up front, led by big tackle Ralph
Tamm , should help provide the necessary blocking for the Rams to put a lot of points on
the board again in 1987. The squad's leading tackler last season, linebacker Pat Tryson ,
heads the defense, which allowed less than two touchdowns per game a year ago. He made
72 tackles and seven sacks, both team bests. Tackle Mike Testa contributed 44 hits and
will be the man depended on in the interior line , while cornerback Andre McFadden had
27 tackles and a team-high four interceptions. The Rams return enough people in key positions to be considered the team to beat in the Eastern Division race again this season .

1987 East Stroudsburg Outlook
The Warriors are seeking a return to winning ways after two straight losing campaigns
in 1985 and 1986. A year ago , the club struggled offensively and must make drastic improvements if the Warriors are to get back to a position they are more accustomed to , that
is , at or near the top of the Pennsylvania Conference's Eastern Division. Veteran coach
Denny Douds will have plenty of returning players to work with in the skill positions on offense,
so the offensive production could increase immediately . The club's top two rushers, top
three receivers, and quarterback Ray Gentilella are all expected to use valuable experience
gained last season to their advantage. Gentilella threw 251 passes completing 95 for 1,047
yards and five touchdowns. He looked mainly for split end Jim Kerins , who hauled in 27
catches for 403 yards and three touchdowns. The other pass catchers back are tight end
Chuck Cornish, 18 receptions for 150 yards and a score . In the backfield, junior Gary Garver led the Warriors in carries as well as yardage gaining 398 yards on 94 rushes. He scored
three touchdowns. The offense scored just nine touchdowns in 1986, four on the ground
and five via the pass. Providing some of the blocking will be all-conference center Mike
Yanders. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Dan Murray, who was an all-conference
choice a year ago is back in the middle . He registered more than 100 tackles and had three
sacks to lead the Warriors in both categories. The other linebacker, Joe Keenan, who finished
just behind Murray in tackles , also returns.

1987 Cheyney Outlook
Head coach Mike Costa is hoping the return of 18 starters , including two of the national
special teams ' leaders , will help his Wolves turn around the back-to-back 2-8 se asons his
club posted in 1985 and 1986 . A host of talented runningbacks led by all-conference tailback Mike Rackley should make the ground game very potent. Rackley gained 516 yard s
on 104 carries and scored four times . Leading the way once again will be fullback Aggrey
Ouintyn , who gained 454 yards on 108 rushes and scored twice . Add speedster Ben Frazier,
who led all NCAA Division II punt returners with a 17.6 average and rushed 23 times for
112 yards and two touchdowns, and the Wolves could have one of the conference ' s top
rushing attacks. Quarterback Andrew Williams didn 't have a real solid season in 1986, but
the year of experience in which he threw 106 passes completing 41 for 576 yards and two
touchdowns can only help him. When the Wolves don't have the ball , punter Julius Flynn
usually puts them in good shape. He led the conference and ranked fifth in the country with
41. 7 average last season. The loss of two all-conference performers up front will hurt the
defense somewhat, but a talented secondary could make it tough to throw against the Wolves.
Defensive end James Williams was impressive in his freshman season a year ago and should
apply the pressure while Reggie Northrup leads the return of the entire starting defensive
backfield. Last year, Cheyney led the conference in pass defense allowing 130.3 yards per
game to its 10 opponents.

1987 Mansfield Outlook
The success of the Mounties in 1987 will depend on consistency. If this club can maintain some of the flashes of brilliance, including victories in its final two games a year ago,
it showed last season Mansfield could present a lot of problems for the perennial frontrunners in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division. Three quarterbacks each threw more
than 80 passes last season giving fourth-year head coach Tom Elsasser plenty of experience
in that position. Todd Smith started the season calling the plays and completed 34 of 82
passes for 387 yards and a score but gave way eventually to freshman Chris Fusco, who
engineered a big upset of PC West foe Edinboro, 28-21. Fusco connected on 52 of 123
passes for 530 yards and two touchdowns before injuries forced Craig Jobes into action.
The newcomer responded by completing 66 of 139 pass attempts for 895 yards and eight
touchdowns in the final five games of the campaign. For his efforts , he was selected as
the PC Eastern Division "Rookie of the Year." Plenty of talent returns in the receiving corps
where John Wood is the top threat after catching more than 40 passes for over 400 yards
and two touchdowns. Experience behind the line could be very thin , so the coaching staff
must come up with a replacement for all-conference tailback Robert Funderburk. Big John
Camoia will be counted on heavily to provide a lot of blocking up front. Defensive tackle
Rob Wheelock, the Mounties top tackler in 1986, heads the defensive unit. He will be backed
up once again by linebackers Mike Beamish and Randall Beasley, who were also among
the team leaders in tackles.

1987 Millersville Outlook
Alter falling one play short of an undefeated regular season and a Pennsylvania Conference
Eastern Division title , the Marauders hope their trademark, defense, will carry them into
the 1987 campaign. Entering the final game of last year, Millersville had a perfect 9-0 mark
only to be stopped by eventual champion West Chester on a 66-yard scoring run in the second half of a 7-3 Rams' triumph. With 26 returning letterwinners, most of them on defense ,
veteran coach Gene Carpenter will look to be in contention for a post-season berth again.
Leading a defense that ranked sixth in the nation , allowing just 9.4 points per game , is allconference tackle T. J. Rudy and ECAC " Rookie of the Year " John Petrus. Petrus led the
team in tackles with 157 while Rudy made his fair share of hits, contributing 77. Junior defensive ends Mike Griffin and Kyle Landis should supply more than an ample dose of pressure
on opposing quarterbacks. Seniors Dion Reed and Michael Brower give the Marauders plenty
of experience in the secondary. On the other side of the ball , the major question mark is
at quarterback where five candidates are vying for the vacant position providing more depth
than ever before but there is no clear cut favorite. Two quality tailbacks give Millersville
an outstanding running game no matter who hands them the ball. All-conference choice
Steve Napier, along with Gary Chidester, combined for over 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns.
A replacement must be found at fullback , but a host of talented candidates exist. The line
and the receiving corps need some help if the Marauders expect the same kind of success
they enjoyed a year ago. Kicker Luke Hadfield , the team scoring leader in 1986 with 65
points , is the top special team's performer.

1987 Slippery Rock Outlook
How quickly the Rockets adjust to a new head coach will determine their success in the
upcoming season . Don Ault resigned in the middle of the summer following five years in
charge of the program , and the new man must do a lot in a hurry. The main goal must be
to develop some consistency after the Rockets lost their first four games a year ago, then
won three in a row , before dropping the final three games. Steve Statnick , who passed for
565 yards and five touchdowns in a reserve role , appears ready to step in as the starting
quarterback . He will have some talent behind him in all-conference tailback Greg Paterra
along with seniors Jim Carr and Ryan Hanson. Paterra gained 693 yards , averaging 5 .7
yards per rush , and scored five touchdowns. Carr and Hanson combined for another 504
yards and two scores . Paterra and Carr offer a double threat to the opposition as they were
the club's top two receivers as well with 11 and 12 catches , respectively. All-American tackle and center Todd Massack , the lone linemen to start all 10 games last season , will need
some help to open holes for the talented backfield. Linebackers Jerome Curtis and Rich
Moskal will be the center of attention on the defense. Curtis registered 95 tackles and five
sacks while Moskal , a converted end , had 74 tackles in 1986. Up front , all-conference selection
Tom Kerr will anchor the line from his nose guard slot. He had 62 tackles and five sacks
last season . If two starters who missed last season due to injuries , Gary Barnes and Todd
Durand , return in good health , the Rockets secondary could be very good . They would join
all-conference cornerback Donovan Wright, 33 tackles , three interceptions .

George Baldwin

1987 Kutztown Outlook
Sixteen starters among the 30 returning lettermen give the Golden Bears reason to believe they can make a run at the top teams in the Pennsylvania Conference's Eastern Division in 1987. Although veteran coach George Baldwin must replace three offensive
performers, who accounted for almost 2,500 yards a year ago, he does have a solid base
with four linemen back as well as quarterback Greg Buchman. The senior completed 136
of 251 passes for 1,778 yards and 15 touchdowns. His top receivers will be flanker Tony
Santella who caught 14 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns as well as tight end Dave
Cullen, 12 receptions for 210 yards and two scores, and split end Brian Auge, 10 catches
for 176 yards and two touchdowns. All-conference guard Stan Wateski leads the veteran
group doing the blocking. With several newcomers in the backfield, the Bears may be throwing
the ball more this season than ever before. Kicker Mike Attardi, who earned all-conference
mention last year while scoring 46 points, may be a key to the Kutztown attack. Only three
starters are gone from the defensive unit, and end Craig Tomlinson is one of the top returnees with 73 tackles to his credit last season. Linebackers Mark Smakulski and Doug Covert,
the club's leading tackler with 78, will be involved in a lot of the action. Defensive back Gary
Awkard recorded 36 tackles and four interceptions and will be expected to produce a big
year in the secondary. Steve Kuhn joins him at strong safety giving the Bears plenty of speed
in the defensive backfield.

Head Coach
Chris Palmer

1987 New Haven Outlook
A year ago under first-year head coach Chris Palmer, the Chargers had one of the most
successful seasons in the school's history posting eight wins in 10 outings and appearing
in the national rankings for the first time ever. With only two starters gone from that club,
New Haven is expecting very big things, hopefully including an invitation to the national
playoffs. The explosive run and shoot offense has been installed by Palmer, and the leader
is junior Mike Horton. Last season he was among the national leaders completing 200 of
361 passes for 2,607 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns. The passing attack a year
ago ranked second in the country in yards per game averaging 301.1. A solid wall in front
of Horton will be the key to the offense's movement and several veterans led by seniors
Brian Cerruto, Matt Bozzo, and Allen Love will be back to provide the blocking. Quality
receivers are available as targets for Horton. Seniors Anton Updale , who caught 41 passes
for 589 yards and two touchdowns, and Bob Wietecha, 29 receptions for 360 yards and
two scores, as well as junior Kevin Haley, 23 receptions for 484 yards and three touchdowns,
all return . When the Chargers stay on the ground , Ron Conyers is the top performer accounting for eight of the squad 's 12 rushing touchdowns in 1986. John Coury leads the
defense up front after registering a team-high 11 sacks last season . Linebacker Erik Lesinski , an honorable mention All-American , was the team's leading tackler with 124 a year ago.
Mike Murphy will play beside Lesinski again where he was second with 99 tackles last year.
Back Pete Gianakis was the interception leader ~th five.

ROBERT 8. REDMAN STADIUM
"HOME OF THE HUSKIES"

Robert B. Redman Stadium is situated on the upper campus of Bloomsburg University
as part of the university's 103-acre athletic complex. Completed in February 1974, the new
facility took the place of Athletic Park in downtown Bloomsburg as "Home of the Huskies."
The stadium, which overlooks the scenic Susquehanna Valley, has seating for 5,000 spectators, although attendance at several events has exceeded that total. The largest crowd
to witness a football game in the facility totalled 7,483 at the 1985 Homecoming contest
against Millersville.
The area is designed for expansion should such a project be needed and contains large
storage capabilities as well as a concession stand and restrooms. The university's upper
campus also contains the E.H. Nelson Fieldhouse, Danny Litwhiler Field (baseball), and
a huge field area which serves as home for the Huskies' soccer and lacrosse teams along
with multiple practice fields. Located inside the stadium confines is an all-weather track used
by BU's men's and women's track and field teams. A pressbox with seating for more than
40 persons is situated on top of the west stands.
Originally, when planning began for the new stadium in 1963, the proposed site was the
area now occupied by 18 tennis courts on the lower campus; however, a consultant's report
recommended the upper campus development. The project finally got underway in 1972
at a total cost of $725,000.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, 1974, the first game was played in the stadium and dedication
ceremonies were held naming the facility in honor of Redman.
A native of Sayre, Pa., and a graduate of its public schools, Coach Redman graduated
with honors in economics at Swarthmore College where he also participated in four years
of varsity football activities, served as captain during his senior year, and was also a varsity
performer with the baseball team. He earned his Master of Arts degree in economics at
Pennsylvania State University during his tenure at Bloomsburg State College.
Redman had coached at Sayre High School and at North High School in Binghamton,
N.Y., prior to serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. He left
the service with the rank of lieutenant commander. He returned to his coaching duties at
North High School and remained there until his appointment at Bloomsburg in 1947.
In addition to serving as head coach of two varsity teams, Redman also served as dean
of men and taught a full schedule of courses in economics.
During his five years at Bloomsburg, his teams won 38 games while losing only four. His
record included three Pennsylvania Conference championships and two undefeated teams.
He left Bloomsburg in September 1952 to become head football coach at East Orange Senior High School, N.J. During the late 50s, he was appointed principal of the senior high school,
and his untimely death occured in 1960 shortly after he had been elected superintendent
of schools in East Orange, N.J.
