BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY
"A Commitment To Excellence"
Bloomsburg University is a multi-purpose instition of higher education serving the
citizens of Pennsylvan ia as one of the 14 Commonwealth-owned Universities. With a
commitment to provide a quality, affordable education for all qualified students,
Bloomsburg combines the tradition of an institution founded in 1839 with modern
learning, living, and recreational programs and facilities. Commonwealth funding
provides 55 percent of Bloomsburg's annual operating budget.
Undergraduate students may enroll in degree progra,ms in 64 areas of study in the
arts and sciences, business, teacher education, nursing, and health sciences. A
program in engineering is offered in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State
University, and preparation for post-baccalaureate study at professional schools is
offered. Unique educational opportunities are available through advanced placement,
study abroad, professional practicum, internships, independent study and the Center
for Academic Development programs.
At the graduate level, the master's degree is offered in 25 areas of study and there
are ten supervisory certification programs in the field of teacher education.
Extended program offerings provide continuing , life-long learning opportunities for
people of all ages and eduational interests through non-degree courses, non-credit
mini-courses, international studies and exchanges, cooperative education, courses
offered at off-campus locations and by public service television, and credit for work
experience.
Enrollment for the Fall semester, 1983, totalled 6,316 students. There were 4,959 fulltime and 850 part-time undergraduates, and 99 full-time and 408 part-time graduate
students. Instruction is provided by a 342-member faculty.
The University's 173-acre campus overlooks the Town of Bloomsburg and the scenic
Susquehanna Valley. Carver Hall, built in 1867, provides a contrast with the modern
facilities that include seven residence halls, a library, a 2,000-seat auditorium, student
union, dining hall, gymnasium, administration building , five classroom buildings,
athletic fields, and recreational areas on the lower campus.
An athletic complex and recreational area occupy the school's 100-acre upper campus.
In addition, the James H. McCormick Center for Human Services is the newest building
on the lower campus and is being used for the first time this fall .
Lcoated less than two miles from an Interstate 80 interchange and 22 miles from
Interstate 81, Bloomsburg is within one hour's driving time from WilkesBarre/Scranton, Hazleton, and Williamsport, 1½ hours from Harrisburg, 2½ hours
from Philadelphia, and 3 hours from New York City. The community is 45 miles from
the Avoca International Airport and is serviced by major bus lines.
Bloomsburg has an enviable placement record . Of the 1,183 who graduated in the
1982-83 academic year, 81 % had meaningful employment or were in graduate school
one year later.
Active files of over 25,000 living alumni are kept by the university. Graduates of BU
have distinguished themselves in areas including law, medicine (one is a Nobel
Laureate), science, architecture, education, industry, and research.
The Bloomsburg University is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of
Colleges and Schools, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher
Education, and the Pennsylvania State Board of Education.

GEORGE J. LANDIS
HEAD COACH
George J. Landis is in his third season as head football
coach at Bloomsburg University.
A former assistant coach at
Dartmouth College,
Landis replaced R. Clark Boler in January of 1982 and has
a two year mark of 6-12-1. In his initial campaign at the
helm, the Huskies posted a 1-7-1 record but showed vast
improvement in almost every category over the previous
year when BU was winless in ten starts. A year ago,
Land is' charges, which consisted of almost 80%
freshmen and sophomores, notched the school's first
non-losing season since 1978 by registering a record of 55. In addition, the youthful team came within one victory
of winning the Pennsylvania Conference's Eastern
Division and making a first-ever trip to the PC's tit le
contest "The State Game." A 13-7 loss to perennial power
East Stroudsburg in the ninth game of the season was all
that stood between the Huskies and a championship
meeting with Western Division winner and eventual PC
Champion Clarion. Bloomsburg finished at 4-2 in the
division and a second place showing.
Landis, 34, a native of Linwood, NJ, helped guide
Dartmouth to an Ivy League co-championship with Yale in
1981 and worked with the Big Green defense that led the
entire ECAC, in team defense, allowing just 13.7 points
per game that season .
The new coach lettered for three years at Penn State
and played in the 1969 and 1970 Orange Bowls in the
Nittany Lions' defensive backfield. In 1970, he was named
to the All East defensive team and was also honored as
South Jersey's College "Athlete of the Year. " He went to
Penn State from Mainland Regional High School in
Linwood, NJ, where he was a varsity starter for all four
years and gained All-American honors. He also played
varsity basketball for three years and baseball for four
years.
He holds both the Bachelor of Science in education
and Master of Education degrees from Penn State.
His coaching experience started at Penn State where
he assisted on the Nittany Lions' staff while earning his
graduate degree. He was the defensive backfield coach at
Villanova and Cornell Universities before taking a head
coaching position at Mainland Reg ional H.S. where he
served for two years. In 1978, he joined the Dartmouth
coaching staff as defensive backfield coach .

Conference selection at Kutztown and is a member of the Bear's Hall of Fame.
3
THE SEASON AHEAD
It appears that the 1984 edition of Bloomsburg Univeristy football can be
tabbed as a bona-fide challenger. Third year Head Coach George Landis'
Huskies are coming off the school's first non-losing season since 1978 after
posting a 5-5 record a year ago. In addition, the youthful unit built a 4-2 mark
in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division and had a shot at the
division crown but dropped a tough 13-7 decision to perennial power East
Stroudsburg in a November showdown and settled for a second-place tie with
Kutztown.
Eighteen starters will return to battle for their positions with several other
veterans as well as a host of newcomers.
As has been the case over Landis' first two years at the helm, the building
process continues with only six seniors listed on the roster.
Putting more points on the scoreboard has to be an immediate goal for the
Huskies as they scored three or more touchdowns only three times in 1983,
averaging 14.2 points per game while giving up an average of 15.0 ppg.
Quarterback Mike Glovas (6-3, 195) returns but will be hard pressed for his
job by sophomore Jay Dedea (6-3, 200). Dedea actually won the starting role
last season but sustained a season-ending knee injury in the opening
contest, and Glovas took over the reins. In the nine starts, he completed 80 of
178 passes for 890 yards and four touchdowns.
Dedea, in BU's 18-7 loss at Slippery Rock to open the campaign, connected
on 18 of 28 aerials for 199 yards and the lone score.
Sophomore Kevin Grande (6-5, 205), the leading receiver last season, will
most likely move from split end to tight end. He caught 20 passes for 307
yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Ken Liebel (5-8, 150) is a long ball
threat as he was tops on the club in yards per catch (16.7) while hauling in 11
bombs for 184 yards. Liebel also doubled as the team's punt return specialist,
handling 20 opponent punts for 168 yards.
The top pass catcher from two years ago, Joe Dowd (6-0, 165), returns after
sitting out last season with a knee injury. He caught 30 passes for 431 yards.
All-purpose runningback Jeff Flickner (5-11, 190) made the successful
move from fullback to tailback in place of the injured Vernon Rochester and
rushed for 800 yards on 204 carries and six touchdowns. In addition, the
sophomore caught 11 passes for 87 yards and an additional touchdown and
returned five kickoffs for 105 yards. The leading candidates to fill the fullback
slot appear to be Calvin Robinson (6-0, 210), a transfer from Saginaw Valley,
or veteran Bob Keil (5-6, 175), who gained 120 yards on 28 carries last year.
The offensive line should be one of the stronger areas for the Huskies as
four of five starters from 1983 are back. Associated Press Little All-American
Honorable Mention center Mike Jupina (5-10,220) is in the middle and has
guard Kevin Trusty (6-2, 215) with Doug DeLambo (6-5, 245), a PC East 2nd
team selection, and Dave Tracy (6-3, 235) at the tackles on either side. The
other guard, Mark Williams, also returns but has moved to outside linebacker.
When Bloomsburg was successful on offense, balance was the key as the
Huskies ended the season with .1, 144 rushing yards and 1,145 yards via the
airways.
All-American first team linebacker Frank Sheptock (6-1, 210) heads the
Huskies' defensive unit, which forced 31 turnovers in the ten games last
season. Sheptock, an inside linebacker who accumulated 140 tackles, almost
twice as many as the next defender, was responsible for several of the
opponent miscues and did recover four fumbles and intercepted three
passes. The other inside spot was occupied by newcomer Jake Williams (6-0,
195) where he ranked third on the team in tackles with 72 and also intercepted
two passes. Williams will move to the defensive backfield this season.
4
Up front, nose guard Mark Landis (6-4, 265) was the top performer with 74
tackles to go along with four quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery.
Landis will probably move back to tackle, a position he played two years
ago, to replace graduated Academic All-American Dave Pepper. The nose
position will be an area the coaching staff will have to fill from a host of
players including returnee Ken Killian (6-2, 220). The other tackle position was
held by sophomore Jim Tyson (6-2, 235), and he had four sacks and two
fumble recoveries to go with 45 tackles.
Probably the strongest area on the field for BU will be the defensive
backfield where the four starters are back and all four were among the
defensive point leaders in 1983. At the corners, are junior Tony Woods (6-0,
195) and sophomore Ron Sahm (6-0, 180). The duo combined for 94 tackles,
three intereceptions, two fumble recoveries, and 13 knocked-down passes.
The team's leader in interceptions with five, Randy Bullock (6-0, 180), will be
back at free safety. As the Huskies' last line of defense, the junior also had 48
tackles and a fumble recovery.
Cas Kosciolek (6-2, 195) rounds out the veteran foursome at the rover
position where he contributed 60 tackles and three interceptions.
An area, which Landis and his staff have stressed over the past two years,
the kicking game, will have a new look as Rick Farris has departed. Farris, who
signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in the off-season, was
perfect on 14 extra point tries and connected on five of eight field goal
attempts. Junior Bob Gabel (5-8, 170), who set a Bloomsburg record with 64
punts a year ago, returns in that role.
Last season, Bloomsburg proved to be a second-half team outscoring the
opposition, 86-60, after the intermission. Those second-half fireworks helped
the young squad put together a four-game winning skein after three losses to
open the season before losses to Kutztown and East Stroudsburg prior to a
triumph over Lycoming in the season finale.
The youth movement that began over two seasons ago appears to be
taking shape, and the Huskies seem ready to challenge for conference
honors.

A LOOK AT THE VETERANS FOR 1984
JAY DEDEA
MIKE GLOVAS
JEFF FLICKNER
DAVE SHUGA
OFFENSEauarterbacks - Jay Dedea won the starting role here a year ago but sustained a
knee injury follow ing the campaign 's opening game and sat out the rest of the season .
In that contest , he completed 18 of 28 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown .
Backup Mike Glovas took over after Dedea went down and performed admirably wh ile
leading the Huskies to their five victories. He connected on 80 of 178 attempted passes
for 890 yards and four touchdowns .
BRIAN SCRIVEN
BOB KEIL
KEVIN GRANDE
JOE DOWD
Runningbacks - After a fine freshman season , Jeff Fl ickner returns at tailback
following a move from fullback. He started there during the first three games of the
season but moved to the tailback slot in place of injured Vernon Rochester. He rushed
for 800 yards on 204 carries and had six touchdowns. In addition , Flickner caught 11
passes for 87 yards and one score and returned five kickoffs for 105 yards. Dave
Shuga, who saw very limited action in 1983, is the other veteran at the position. Brian
Scirven , formerly an outside linebacker, made the successful move to tailback in the
spring and could see a lot of action .
With the move of Flickner to tailback, Bob Keil saw some playing time at fullback
where he carried the ball 28 times for 120 yards and a touchdown . Also vying for the
start ing berth will be transfer Calvin Robinson .
KEN LIEBEL
BRAIN BIDELSPACH
MIKEJUPINA
-
DOUG DeLAMBD
Receivers - The top two pass catchers during the last two seasons both return as
do two other proven receivers. Kevin Grande snagged 20 aerials for 307 yards and two
touchdowns in 1983 to lead ail BU performers while Joe Dowd hauled in 30 passes for
431 yards in 1982. Dowd sat out last season with a knee injury but returns at wide
receiver, and Grande will probably move to tight end.
Long ball threat Ken Liebel had 11 catches for 184 yards a year ago, and flanker
Brian Bidelspach accounted for another 78 yards on four receptions and three rushes.

FRANK SHEPTDCK
Offensive Line - Four of five starters return led by AP Little All-American Honorable
Mention and Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division first team selection Mike
Jupina at center. Jupina will also serve as one of the Huskies' co-captains in 1984. A
pair of juniors will man the tackle spots with PC East second team choice, Doug
Delambo, on the right side and Dave Tracy on the left. A player, who started on the line
his first year with the team, Kevin Trusty, returns at right guard, and sophomore Bob
Phillips could assume the left guard position after seeing much playing time there last
season. B.J. Swaldi, a transfer from West Chester, could be one newcomer that could
see a lot of time on the field .
-
BUTCH KAHLAU
;
MATT ERDMAN
DAVE HECKMAN
........
DWAYNE HOFFMAN
DEFENSEInside Linebackers - The heart of the defense with AP Little All-American first team
pick Frank Sheptock leading the way. An AII-ECAC South and PC East first team
selection a year ago, also, he recorded 140 tackles which was almost twice as many as
the next Husky defender. In addition, he had four fumble recoveries and three
interceptions.
Butch Kahlau and Matt Erdman will look to step in full-time in place of Jake
Williams, who has made the move to cornerback. Kahlau saw quite a bit of action while
Erdman was sidelined most of the season with an injury.
'--.......
GARY CATTS
'~
MARK WILLIAMS
JIM SPINDLER
MARK LANDIS
Outside linebackers - With the move of Scriven to tailback, Dave Heckman and Jim
Spindler, two players who started during their freshman seasons, look to have the
inside track. However, veterans like Dwayne Hoffman and Gary Catts, along with Mark
Williams, who moved from guard, could solidify an area that concerned the coaching
staff entering spring drills.
9
JIM TYSON
KEN KILLIAN
WES COOK
TONYWOOOS
Defensive llne - Two of three starters return on the front wall with CoSIDA
Academic All-American Dave Pepper, the lone performer to graduate. Mark Landis will
move back to his original position at tackle from the nose guard spot, and sophomore
Jim Tyson will remain at the other tackle. Landis was second on the club last season in
tackles with 74, and Tyson added 45 others. The duo also combined for eight sacks and
three fumble recoveries. A pair of backups in 1983, Ken Killian and Wes Cook, who was
an offensive guard, will try for the starting berth at nose guard .
RON SAHM
LEO HARRIS
JAKE WILLIAMS
RANDY BULLOCK
Defensive Secondary - Definitely the strongest area on the squad with at least one
proven performer at each position. At the corners, 1983 starters Tony Woods and Ron
Sahm return, along with backup Leo Harris and the team's third best tackler a year
ago, Jake Wi lliams, who moved from inside linebacker. Also back are free safety
Randy Bullock and rover Cas Kosciolek, as well as reserves Pete Woodhouse and
Hank Haidacher. Last season, the group got together for 280 tackles, 13 interceptions,
and recovered three fumbles .
CAS KDSCIDLEK
PETE WOODHOUSE
HANK HAIDACHER
BOB GABEL
Kicking - Two year starter, Bob Gabel , is back as the Huskies' punter where he set
a school record by booting the ball 64 times in 1983. The rest of the kicking game is
wide open with the departure of Rick Farris. Following graduation, Farris signed a free
agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

1983 IN REVIEW
The 1983 football season was one everyone around the program entered optimistically, but also realistically. Second year head coach George Landis' team had shown
much improvement despite going 1-7-1 the previous year; however, over 80% of the
squad consisted of freshmen and sophomores and solid experience was definitely
lacking at most positions. An 0-3 start and the loss of the starting quarterback had
some raising questions, but the young Huskies rebounded winning their next four
straight contests despite the loss of star runningback Vernon Rochester who suffered
a severe spinal cord injury. Following consecutive losses to Kutztown and perennial
power East Stroudsburg, Bloomsburg closed its first non-losing season since 1978
with a season-ending triumph at home over Lycoming to finish with a record of 5-5.
GAME ONE -
SLIPPERY ROCK 18, BLOOMSBURG 7
Two turnovers and a blocked punt helped the homestanding Rockets build a 15-0
lead in the first quarter and coast to victory in the season-opener for both squads. A
five yard pass from Jay Dedea to Kevin Grande was the Huskies' lone score. The TD
capped a 72 yard drive that took 11 plays. Rick Farris added the extra point. Dedea
completed 18 of 28 passes for 199 yards with Grande and tight end Stan Kucewicz
each with five catches.
GAME TWO -
SHIPPENSBURG 10, BLOOMSBURG 9
A two-point conversion attempt that failed with 37 seconds remaining in the game
proved to be the difference in this contest. An 80 yard, 13 play drive in the final three
minutes culminated by a 13 yard touchdown run by Vernon Rochester set up the
conversion try after the Red Raiders broke a 3-3- tie with a fourth quarter score of their
own. Farris again accounted for the other points by booting a 36 yard field goal in the
third quarter. Mike Glovas made his first varsity start at quarterback and completed ten
passes for 125 yards, three of them to Ken Liebel for 57 yards.
GAME THREE- LOCK HAVEN 28, BLOOMSBURG 10
The Huskies' worst performance of the season despite an outstanding effort by
Rochester. Bloomsburg held a 10-7 lead in the second quarter on a 63 yard touchdown
run by Rochester and Farris' extra point. The senior kicker also had a 25 yard field goal,
but then the roof caved in . The Bald Eagles took a 14-10 lead into the lockerroom and
added two touchdowns to the final total. On the afternoon, Rochester accounted for
208 yards with 158 rushing, 28 receiving and a kickoff return for 22 yards.
GAME FOUR -
BLOOMSBURG 10, MANSFIELD 6
Defense was the story in the Huskies' first victory of the season as linebackers
Frank Sheptock and Jake Williams led four stands against serious Mountie scoring
threats. The duo combined for 24 tackles and Wiliams had two interceptions. BU
scored on its first possession despite a 15 minute delay while medical personnel
removed the Huskies' Vernon Rochester from the field when he suffered a severe
injury. Bob Keil scored on a one yard dive and Farris' conversion gave the visitors all
the points they needed. He later added a field goal of 43 yards.
GAME FIVE -
BLOOMSBURG 25, WEST CHESTER 24
A 21 yard Glovas-to-Grande touchdown pass with 1:52 left in the game capped a
furious Husky comeback in the fourth quarter. Bloomsburg entered the final period
trailing 24-5 but got the opportunity for the win on touchdown runs by Jeff Flickner and
John Kelley before defensive back Ron Sahm blocked a West Chester punt to set up
the winning score. Flickner rushed for 106 yards on the day and Grande had four
receptions for 112 yards. Farris kicked a 41 yard field goal, the fourth consecutive
game in which he had a three-pointer.
GAME SIX -
BLOOMSBURG 22, MILLERSVILLE 14
For the second week in a row, a fourth quarter rally pulled the Huskies to a victory.
Flickner and Kelley again capped drives with scoring runs in the last stanza.
Flickner also scored in the third period and Farris kicked another field goal. The
tailback had an outstanding afternoon rushing 33 times for 178 yards and the two
touchdowns. The win helped the Huskies equal their best start ever in the PC Eastern
Division. Punter Bob Gabel had a 41.5 average for the day.
GAME SEVEN -
BLOOMSBURG 17, CHEYNEY 13
The first homecoming game victory for Bloomsburg since 1979, but more
importantly, it kept the Huskies tied for first place in the PC East. The defense keyed
this fourth straight win with three pass interceptions and Sheptock earned "Player of
the Game" honors with 17 tackles and an interception. Flickner had his third 100 plus
11
yard game as he rushed for 169 yards on 37 carries. Kelley and Flickner again scored
the touchdowns and Farris made good on another field goal marking the sixth straight
game he was successful.
GAME EIGHT - KUTZTOWN 14, BLOOMSBURG 7
The homestanding Bears snapped the winning streak at four games but not without
a struggle. The Huskies drove to the Kutztown 10 yard line in the final seconds, but
with no timeouts left, the clock continued to run and the Huskies couldn't prevent the
loss. Butch Kahlau set up the final attempt when he recovered a fumble on the
Kutztown 43. The lone Husky score came early in the fourth quarter on a Flickner one
yard plunge.
GAME NINE - EAST STROUDSBURG 13, BLOOMSBURG 7
A showdown for the title in the PC Eastern Division, the first time Bloomsburg had
ever been in contest for the division crown. Two late interceptions by the Warriors
stifled potential winning drives and gave the visitors a trip to the "State Game."
Bloomsburg scored early in the last period on a Glovas-to-Jim Weisenburger 14 yard
pass that capped an 80 yard march. Defensive back Tony Woods had a fine afternoon
for Bloomsburg with 14 tackles and a pass interception.
GAME TEN - BLOOMSBURG 28, LYCOMING 10
Highest offensive output of the season for the Huskies and the win assured BU of its
first non-losing season in five years and only the fourth since 1970. Flickner scored two
touchdowns on a run of 81 yards and a 33 yard reception and tight end Stan Kucewicz
ended his career in fitting fashion with TD receptions of four and 41 yards. The latter
pass was from flanker Kevin Grande. Randy Bullock and Cas Kosciolek led the tough
defense with an interception each.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference is comprised of 14 schools in
the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. This new governing
body took over from the Department of Education on July 1, 1983, and the
change was also reflected in the granting of university status to all member
institutions formerly known as "state colleges."
The conference is under the leadership of a Board of Directors consisting
of the 14 university presidents.
The conference sponsors championship competition in ten sports for men
and ten for women as follows: Fall Season - MEN - cross country, football,
soccer; WOMEN - cross country, field hockey, tennis and volleyball. Winter
Season - MEN - Basketball, swimming and diving, and wrestling; WOMEN basketball, gymnastics, swimming and diving. Spring Season - MEN baseball, golf, tennis, and track and field; WOMEN - lacrosse, softball, and
track and field.
All 14 schools are members of Division II of the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA). In Individual sports, however, some schools
have elected to compete in other NCAA divisions.
Athletes and teams have won numerous honors in national competition
and have helped the PSAC become one of the most respected "small
college" conferences in the nation.
PSAC COMMISSIONER
Donald G. Kelley was appointed as the first Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on July 1, 1983.
As Commissioner, Mr. Kelley acts as the chief
administrative officer of the PSAC and serves as a
liaison between the Board of Directors of the PSAC
and the Directors of Athletics for the fourteen state
universities.
Kelley's headquarters are located in the Hershey
Information Center adjacent to Hersheypark in
Hershey, PA. Prior to his appointment, the Conference
was under the direction of the university Presidents
and was administered by the university Athletic
Directors.

In 1978, he joined the Dartmouth
coaching staff as defensive backfield coach .

that, he was a Husky assistant coach for 1976-80. He was an All-Pennsylvania

Directors.
