1981
Outlook • 1981
Head coach Clark Boler enters his second season in
the position of trying to rebuild the Huskies gridiron
fortunes. He was appointed to the position in February
1980 and has just completed his first full year of
recruiting and made some major changes both offensively and defensively in an effort to turn around a
program that has posted only four winning campaigns
since 1960.
Quarterback/punter Kurt Werkheiser leads the I ist of
returning veterans. Last season he led the Eastern
Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
in completions per game (11.3) connecting on 102
aerials in nine games. The 6-1, 200 lb. senior completed
just under 50% of his passes for 955 yards and four
touchdowns . As the Huskies' punter, Werkheiser
booted the ball 58 times for 2137 yards for an average
of 36.8 per kick.
BSC's second leading receiver in 1980, Mike Blake
also returns. The junior hauled in 22 passes for 253
yards. Blake leads a host of talented pass catchers
including split end Steve Moran, slotback Stan
Kucewicz and tightend Doug Meier, which probably
makes this area the strongest on the squad.
The Huskies' ground game which averaged only 54.5
yards per game a year ago is bolstered by the healthy
return of sophomore Steve Meszaros . He averaged 45
yards a game in four contests carrying the ball 61
times for 180 yards.
AII-PSAC selection Brian Greenberg leads the
returnees on defense. The diminutive safety led the
team in interceptions last season and also contributed
94 tackles. Defensive ends Chris Blackburn, Jamie
Sochovka, and Dave Pepper have the experience and
quickness to cause problems for opposing backfields,
while John Bolton and Greg O'Neill join Greenberg to
give the Huskies a stable defensive backfield . The
interior line and linebacking positions will be a question
mark with Al Beck and Jack Hess being the only linebackers with game experience and Ward Martin and
Tim Tkach, two of the few veterans on the line.
Over 40 newcomers reported to camp along with the
veterans , and the staff and squad members will be
looking forward to improving u'pon the dismal 1-8 mark
of a year ago.
Boler commented, "This season we 've got a lot of
new faces and some talented veterans so we look forward to a fresh start. Regardless of the outcome, we
expect to hit people and not give up any yards the easy
way."
Head Coach • 1981
Rodrick "Clark" Boler, a member of Alabama's 1961 national
championship team, was named
head football coach at Bloomsburg State College in February
1980. He joined the HPEA
department in 1968 and served
as the head basebal I coach for
the 12 years prior to his accepting the job of trying to turn
around the Huskies football
fortunes .
The Alabama native has a broad background in both
coaching and participation as an athlete. In addition to
coaching baseball, he served as head cross country
coach for four seasons and was an assistant football
coach for eight years from 1968 -1976. On the defensive
side, his assignments included: defensive line, linebackers, and defensive coordinator. He was also the
offensive coordinator for two years.
Boler was a member of two of the Alabama teams,
under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, that Joe Namath
played on (1962 and 1963) and then served as freshman
and scout team coach at 'Barna in 1964, the year the
Crimson Tide won another national crown. The 1962
squad played Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and in 1963
Boler was senior game captain when the Tide met
Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg he taught physical
education and physical science courses at Gadsden
High School, Gadsden, Alabama, where he served as
head baseball coach and assistant football and basketball coach. During that time, Gadsden won Etowah
County championships in football and baseball.
As a high school letter winner in three sports at
Tuscaloosa County High School, Boler received AllState honors in football and won the Most Valuable
Player Award when his team won the Class AA State
Basketball Championship. In addition to playing football while at Alabama, he was a member of the varsity
baseball team for three years and also played freshman
basketball. Following his college career, he was a
successful player-coach of a semi-pro basketball team
in Alabama.
Boler has also been a PIAA basketball official since
1970.

Coaches' Player Profiles
AL BECK: Junior linebacker-an extremely aggressive player
that remains active all the time. He showed great
improvement in the spring drills and will be a key to BSC's
defensive success .
DOUG BERRY: Junior kicker-constantly improving and
perfecting his kicking style. He has better range and
accuracy and may be the difference in any close games this
season .
CHRIS BLACKBURN: Senior defensive lineman-he can play
tackle as well as defensive end with equal success, has
experience and versatility enough to help at both positions.
Worked hard on weight training program in the off season
and it should show during the year.
MIKE BLAKE: Junior tight end-could possibly be the best
athlete on the team. He has great hands and finds the open
area very well . Can take the hard hits and still hold on to the
ball.
JOHN BOLTON: Senior defensive back-should develop into
one of the leaders in the defensive backfield . Has the
quickness and experience to shut down the opponents'
passing game to his side . Gained valuable game experience
and should be ready to excell.
JOHN DeMARTINO: Sophomore offensive lineman-a fine
athlete who is coming off an injury a year ago. He has a great
attitude and in time should develop into a solid performer on
the offensive line.
ERIC FEERRAR: Sophomore linebacker-is extremely quick
and will add solid depth to the defense. A strong candidate
for an outside linebacker position, he has impressed the
coaching staff with his hitting ability.
BRIAN GREENBERG: Senior defensive back-was an AllConference second team selection as a junior. His size is no
deterrent and his attitude inspires the entire team . He was
named the most improved defensive player on the team in
1980 by his teammates and coaches.
JACK HESS: Junior linebacker-he has the best working
knowledge of the linebacking corps. Is very strong against
the pass and will give the Huskies needed strength up the
middle.
HARRY JAMES: Sophomore runningback-he has great versatility and strength . Harry runs hard and has the ability to
run over people . He will be cgunted on heavily in the
offensive attack.
STAN KUCEWICZ: Sophomore wide receiver-only one of
the talented crop of receivers. He is a fine athlete who gained
valuable experience in his first season. Good speed and runs
well disciplined patterns.
BOB LONG: Sophomore quarterback/fullback-a player
whose versatility is his biggest asset. He can play both
positions and his size and durability will help during the long
season.
WARD MARTIN: Sophomore defensive lineman-he can play
defensive end, but has shown his best results as a tackle .
Switched from the offensive line last season and has
adjusted very well. Has a good nose for the football and will
usually be where the action is.
ALAN McELROY: Senior defensive lineman-an extremely
hard worker who has a lot of experience at his position. He
will give some needed stability to the defensive front and his
agility will help him contain opposing backs.
DOUG MEIER: Senior tight end-at 6'5" his size helps him a
great deal. He has excellent hands and makes the difficult
catch look easy. When BSC uses a two tight end system, he
will see a lot of playing time.
STEVE MESZAROS: Sophomore runningback-an extremely
quick and durable athlete. An injury hampered him last
season but he still had time to establish himself as a top
back. Set the BSC record for longest kickoff return (99 yds.)
last season .
DAVE MONTAGNA: Senior center-his hard work has paid
off and he should become a solid performer at the center
position. Also will serve as a backup kicker. His thirty-eight
yard field goal in the final three seconds provided BSC with
its only win a year ago.
STEVE MORAN: Junior wide receiver-another in the long
line of good receivers. Has great moves and knows how to
get open. Was the third leading pass catcher last season .
GREG O'NEILL: Sophomore defensive back-capable of
playing both free and strong safety. He plays the pass and
run equally well. Also return kickoffs and punts.
DAVE PEPPER: Sophomore defensive end-gained valuable
experience as a freshman and had a very good spring
practice. Size and agility are his biggest assets. Needs to
work on his quickness.
JAMIE SOCHOVKA: Senior defensive end-another returning starter from last year. His ability to be in the right place at
the right time will force opposing defenses to key on him . Big
and strong.
TIM TKACH: Senior defensive lineman-switched from
tackle from the offensive line and was a pleasant surprise in
the spring. He is an aggressive, hard-nosed player who will
add maturity to the defense.
KURT WERKHEISER: Senior quarterback/punter- definitely
the player with the most experience on the team . Led the
eastern division of the PSAC in completions per game last
season and was also among conference leaders as a punter.
JIM ZACCHEO: Senior offensive lineman-he is very quick
and handles his position well. Has turned into a team leader.
Should be one of the top performers on the team and if he
continues to improve, he could be in line for some post
season honors.
