Football Outlook • 1980
Eighteen returning lettermen were among the over 90
Bloomsburg State College football candidates
reporting to campus in mid-August to begin daily
practice sessions for one of the toughest schedules in
the school's history.
New head coach Clark Boler and his staff have their
work cut out to prepare to meet the 1979 NCAA
Division Ill national champion, Ithaca in the opener on
September 6.
"Since approval for Bloomsburg to become a
Division II team came late, we weren't able to hold
spring practice," Boler said. "So we only have about
three weeks to size up the candidates, half of which
are newcomers. However, we have a good nucleus of
returnees to build around and we expect to be a very
competitive team."
Leading the returning lettermen are two first team
eastern division Pennsylvania Conference selections
in Bob Schwalm, a 5'10", 215 pound defensive tackle,
and Dino Darbenzio, a 6'0", 215 pound offensive guard.
Second team PC selections back are 6'1", 215 pound
senior offensive guard Bob Crosetto, and 6'3", 220
pound offensive tackle Ernie Jackson.
Other key returners include wide receiver and
defensive back Duane Frantz, linebacker Mark Beeson,
tight end Mike Blake, offensive linesman Ken Breuer,
quarterback Dale Crooks, offensive tackle Dave Gillis,
linebacker Mark McCauslin, defensive ends Chuck
Muller, and Scott Schutz, center Kevin Pike, fullback
Bentz Tozer, quarterback and punter Kurt Werkheiser,
and offensive guard Jim Zaccheo.
Boler was named head coach in February of this
year after Ron Puhl requested a change in assignment
following BSC's 2-8 season in '79. Carl Hinkle, Irvin
Wright, Bill Derr, Joe Geiger, Frank Williams, Bill
Wolff, all of whom were assistant coaches under Puhl
are back, and new assistant coaches are Bill Sproule,
Frank Galicki, Al Cihocki, and Paul Boone.
Key losses through graduation were All-American
runningback Mike Morucci, who was drafted by New
Orleans, all-conference defensive end Kurt Pettis, who
signed as a free agent with Kansas City; and allconference linebackers Howie Gulick, and Dale
Hockenberry.

Head Football Coach 1980
Rodrick "Clark" Boler, a member of Alabama's 1961 national
championship team, was named
head football coach at Bloomsburg State College in February
1980. He replaced Ron Puhl who
requested reassignment of his
responsibilities in the Health,
Physical Education and Athletics Department following the
1979 season.
Boler, who joined the HPEA department in 1968,
served as head baseball coach for the past 12 years.
The Alabama native has a broad background in both
coaching and participation as an athlete. In addition to
coaching baseball, he has been coach of cross country
at BSC for the past four years and was an assistant
football coach for eight years from 1968 - 1976. On
defense his assignments included defensive line
coach, linebacker coach and defensive coordinator. He
also was an offensive coordinator for two years.
Boler was a member of two of the Alabama teams
Joe Nameth played on (1962 and 1963) and then served
as a freshman and scout team coach at Alabama in
1964, the year the Crimson Tide won another national
championship. The Barna team of 1962 played Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and in 1963 Boler was senior
game captain when the Tide played Oklahoma in the
Orange Bowl.
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg he taught physical
education and physical science courses at Gadsden
High School, Gadsden, Alabama, where he also served
as head baseball coach, assistant football coach, and
assistant basketball coach. During that time, Gadsden
won Etowah County championships in football and
baseball.
As a high school letter winner in three sports at
Tuscaloosa County High School, Boler received AllState honors in football and won Most Valuable Player
Award when his team won the Class AA State Basketball Championship. In addition to playing football at
the University of Alabama, he was a member of the
varsity baseball squad for three years and played
freshman basketball. Following his college career, he
was a successful player-coach of a semi-pro basketball team in Alabama. Boler has also been a PIAA
basketball official for over eight years.
